Matthews was an ice-cold killer today.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:18 PM ^
REALLLLY good to see his swag back.
Cant wait for State.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:25 PM ^
Played like he wasn't worrying about the NBA and trying to prove he has a 3-pointer.
FINALLY!!!
Last year and throughout the tournament, he was RELENTLESS driving in the lane and his pull-up jumper is second to none. I get that makes him a dinosaur in this new world of analytics where you need to get a lay-up or 3. But that's his game.
He can get a 10ft jumpshot anytime he wants and he's so athletic that you're either off balance trying to keep up with him driving to the basket or he jump out jumps you.
When get goes all the way to the basket he's charge or turnover prone unless it's a dunk, when he settles for 3's he's hit or miss. But when he attacks the short/midrange, he's a 1st team All-B1G player.
Here's hoping he's done trying to improve his 3-point shot, or impress scouts, etc. Just use your God given ability, get close to the cup, stop or step back or fade or spin and do what you do. It's unguardable.

Agree. Sort of like DeRozen in NBA. DeRozen drives and dribbles better, but similar game. Not a great 3-pt shooter, but solid mid range game. He’s making it in nba. That’s the game Matthews needs to implement. I think his dribbling is more important to work-on/develop over 3-point shooting. Hopefully JB and staff sees from this 2nd half what they need to do with Matthews.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:42 PM ^
Very nice comparison. Never considered that, but very similar and definitely understand what you're talking about.
If the 3 is wide open, by all means, take it...but he can get anywhere he wants in the midrange and he's pretty lethal. Last year that's all he did, stick with it, that's the Charles Matthews that can help carry this team back to the finals.
February 9th, 2019 at 4:34 PM ^
Another guy who is probably a closer comparison is Shaun Livingston w/ GS. Had a nice career shooting no 3’s. He’s better ball handler than Matthews, but Matthews better D. Could be similar career paths if Matthews sticks to what he does best. The thing I think holding Matthews back most is his ball handling. Several guys in league below average from 3’s, but I can’t think of many 6-6 guys who are worse/equal to Matthews in dribbling. Disappointed he didn’t work on that/improve on this from last year. Bright side, nba doesn’t call traveling, so Matthews has that going for him.
February 9th, 2019 at 4:42 PM ^
Interesting comparison, but I'm not sure it really fits. Shaun is a real scorer; his job is to be the first scoring option off the bench, instant offense.
Matthews is more of a defensive stopper, has way better hops and is far less consistent offensively. He's actually more like the current version of Iguodala IMO.
February 9th, 2019 at 8:57 PM ^
Iguodala shoots 3’s. Not saying Livingston/Matthews great comparison. Just a guy been successful not making any 3’s. Lots of mid-range & post-ups.
February 9th, 2019 at 3:23 PM ^
He's only taken 36 threes in 13 conference games. That's 2.8 per game. He took two today. His shot selection was typical for him. The long twos just fell today, thank goodness.
February 9th, 2019 at 3:35 PM ^
Nice stats. He shouldn’t take more than 2 per game. I like his post-up game, that seems like his comfort zone.
February 9th, 2019 at 4:46 PM ^
or when he penetrates he can kick out to someone for three if they collapse on him. . .
February 9th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
You posted this before the game was over. You did it just so you could be first. You accomplished something today, sir. Are you proud?
February 9th, 2019 at 2:06 PM ^
In 3.0 the OP is so much harder to see and no upvotes so it's not like there's anything special to it now.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:07 PM ^
The outcome was clear. It wasn't like a presidential election or something.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:12 PM ^
This really is your time to shine.
February 10th, 2019 at 8:15 PM ^
I’m starting to think this is actually you Putin. Why you like Michigan?
February 9th, 2019 at 9:36 PM ^
Nope. That outcome was pretty clear cut.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:09 PM ^
I wanted to get in my shot at Wisconsin with the thread title.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:46 PM ^
I’m sympathetic to your reasoning, I really am. But... “bugmen?” That’s the best shot we can get in?
February 9th, 2019 at 2:56 PM ^
Thought the same thing. Title bugs me.

Not sure it applies now that Bo Ryan is gone.
February 9th, 2019 at 4:05 PM ^
They're back to the same kind of bullshit that made vintage Bo Ryan teams miserable. His last couple were actually almost fun to watch.
February 9th, 2019 at 3:23 PM ^
It's a reference to the fact that Wisconsin players are all the same person year after year, down to their buzzcuts.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:19 PM ^
Welp to be fair, the game was over, before it was over. Go Blue!
February 9th, 2019 at 5:57 PM ^
Really? Why don’t you tell us more about your degrees and income? You’re so accomplished and all.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
That was a beautiful close out of a tough team. Matthews brought his A+ game in the 2nd half.

So you're saying we're gonna beat Iowa in the B1G Tourney? Sounds good.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:44 PM ^
Well played, my friend.
February 9th, 2019 at 5:17 PM ^
Well they took care of last season's ending loss so yeah I would say they're gonna smoke Iowa in the B1G tourney.
February 9th, 2019 at 7:09 PM ^
Would love another crack at those Hawkeyes....
February 9th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
Great win. Wisconsin played well, shot well, Michigan played better, outstanding D and smarter at the end of the game. 22-2. Sweet.
February 9th, 2019 at 2:21 PM ^
Indeed however Happ got away with 3 or 4 more additional fouls that the refs failed to call.
Didnt matter as our boys put them away late. From the time we were down 13-5 we outscored them 56-39.
Go Blue, keep it going!!!!
February 9th, 2019 at 2:30 PM ^
41% yeesh. Not really.
Now Glen Rice shot 50% from 3 as our number one option and most usage.
February 9th, 2019 at 10:11 PM ^
You know the 3 point line was closer then, right?
February 9th, 2019 at 2:05 PM ^
CHARLIE MATTHEWS
February 9th, 2019 at 3:45 PM ^
It's possible I haven't been paying attention, and if so, I apologize ...
But having said that - since when has he been "Charlie" Matthews, as the CBS announcer insisted on calling him?
February 9th, 2019 at 4:15 PM ^
First time I heard him called "Charlie" was Gus Johnson earlier in the year. He may be the only commentator that actually calls him that. I have no idea if anyone on the team or staff calls his Charlie, I think it honestly may just be Gus' thing.
February 9th, 2019 at 4:20 PM ^
Pretty sure it’s only Gus Johnson doing what he does. Have not heard it otherwise.
