Dantonio Calls State a Destination

Submitted by CincyBlue on

I think he would jump to Texas quickly if they came offering $6M-$7M a year.  It seems there was a coach that used it as a stop and went on to big things.

When asked about the Texas job:

"I see Michigan State as a destination, not a stop," Dantonio said. "That's how I see it. Flattering, but that's how I see it."

Genuine question:  Wouldn't we be cutting MSU down if that were the case?  I don't get the sense that MSU fans spent a lot of time complimenting Michigan in, say, 2006.

I don't see anything wrong with giving credit where it's due.  I think it would speak poorly of us if we didn't.

Brother Syndrome.  The symptoms are much different that LBS but equally if not more troubling.  The ailment common on this Board and with a lot of Michigan fans is an intense need to compliment and applaud Michigan State and their fans over and over again as though seeking acceptance from some club that they badly want in on.  Yes, it is OK to give credit.  But this is not a Michigan State blog and this post is just no longer relevant to the subject matter of this particular blog.  OT would be appropriate.

Michigan State is absolutely not a destination job. Dantonio has done an admirable job. They will always be in contention with him there, but that is it. MSU doesn't have the history, resources, fertile recruiting grounds, or stellar academics to be considered a destination job. They don't have any of those things and it requires a combination of all to some degree to make it a destination job.

That may be the case, but there aren't very many college jobs that are better than MSU across the board. No more than 8-10 nationally. Given that Dantonio is in his late 50's, his experience and recruiting ties are almost entirely limited to the midwest, and he's built a consistent winner at MSU, I can see how he would consider MSU a destination. The only job he might leave for is OSU, and that job isn't likely to open up anytime soon.

Lets say B.O.B. leaves PSU for whatever job. Does Penn State give Dantonio a call? I have to imagine they do. And if that happens I think Sparty is looking for a new head coach, destination or not. Lies, Mark. LIES!

I earned my high horse after four years in Ann Arbor and its hanging on the wall of my corner office behind my desk son. The greenies may have our number in football and basketball, but academics......never happen.

Perhaps you're on the wrong board.

A little humility would serve you well in life. You seem to be desperately looking for any 'victory'. I'm proud of my Michigan degree also but I work with (and date) some very smart Spartans and some not so smart and not so capable Michigan alums who struggle to complete the most menial of tasks. It's on the person really. For those of us who grew up in the state and still work in the state it's easier to separate the fandom from the person since we interact so much. There's really no need for personal attacks of this nature.

He was pissed when Martin didnt offer him job when Carr consistently lost to his mentor Tressel.

He would have taken the OSU job if offered, instead they gave it to Meyer.

At this point, I doubt he takes another job.

Boise State had the same or higher levels of success for the same amount of time as MSU; are they a destination school?  Alabama was as bad as Michigan for a while, did they lose destination status?  Being a "destination" school is about more than your most recent four-year record.  Does MSU pay top dollar for their coaches and assistants?  Do they have state-of-the-art facilities?

Dantonio is on a nice run, but do it consistently over the next 10 years before you want to look at it being a top-level program.  Don't forget that they have to start playing OSU and Penn State every year, and probably one of Wisconsin or Nebraska to make it out of the B1G from now on.  They can't hide from the best in the conference any more.

I can see Dantonio staying at MSU because he seems like the kind of person who doesn't want the pressure of coaching at somewhere like Texas.

Dantonio just had chicken soup for lunch.

He declared it a "destination meal" not just something you have before eating something better.

Michigan fans around the world heard these words and shuddered.

Who cares where Dantonio's going or Narduzzi's going? We have a game next week. We have had more threads on MSU than our own team. So they are going to the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin did that three straight years and we didn't have a thread everyday. Who gives a flying shit about them. Focus on Michigan.

Dantonio leaving staying relates to Michigan football. Countless threads begging him to leave because Michigan fans have become big enough pussies that they think that we can never beat him while he's there have become annoying. Just start a thread when something actually happens.

Wow.  You people sure do like to get worked up about Sparty news.  That's what it is - news.  And its appropriate Board material.  That doesn't mean we need to spaz out and argue back and forth about whether we are "little brother" now and whether or not we should care.  Its news that relates to Michigan football.  Read it.  Ignore it.  Whatever.  Just calm the fuck down.

We need to quit focusing on other schools.. We need to focus on how our Wolverines can win ball games.. not about "State" or Ohio.  This team is in a crucial phase right now.  Recruiting and those around us , yes are quite fascinating, but as Michigan fans, the most important thing is beating KSU on the 28th. One thing at a time and this program can and will be well on its way to the roses once again

How quickly things change

SC was a nothing job until Holtz/Spurrier got there.  The mighty Sparky Woods and Brad Scott led the program in the 90s.  Who? Yes exactly. They were basically Purdue. Stanford was a nothing job until Harbaugh got there. Bill Walsh had 1 good season there.  Buddy Teevens, Walt Harris, Jack Elway, Paul Wiggin.  This was a destination? Even Dennis Green was a .500 coach there.  Funny you put those 2 school in the hat when many can say MSU was a nothing job until Dantonio got there.  10 years ago if you said SC or Stanford were above MSU in any way in terms of a football job you'd be laughed at - all 3 sucked.

And UCLA has been more or less mediocre for 2+ decades.  USC was / is the dominant animal in that area.  UCLA pops up into a Rose Bowl every so often but was a lot better program 30 years ago.

MSU is not a "destination" job for most coaches but for Mark "I fucking hate Michigan with every fiber in my soul" Dantonio it is.  He will be to MSU what Bo was to us.  Peope forget just how bad MSU was pre Dantonio.  Saban had 1 very good year there really and then left, and after that they had twin nightmares in Williams and JL Smith.  If Dantonio did nothing but beat UM 5 of 6 years and went 1-11 every year he'd have statues down the road built for him... but going to the Rose Bowl and putting up 11 win seasons over and over for a program where .500 used to be a "solid year"?  Yes it's a desintation - he is their football Izzo.  For a random coach anywhere else - nah.  There are maybe 12-13 destination jobs IMO and the Big 10 has 2-4 depending on your views of PSU and Nebraska.

I agree with most of this.  However, any coach who puts up 11+ wins 3 out of 4 seasons is doing a HELL of a job, no matter where they coach.  Also, you nailed it when saying how Dantonio had to follow Williams/JLS--what a pair to draw to.  In no way, shape or form did Hoke have that kind of mess to clean up.

A great coach can change everything, obviously, and the bottom line is in perception. Stanford is in its 4th BCS bowl in a row, MSU hasn't been there since 87. For South Carolina, the top half of SEC schools are all major jobs nowadays. For all the wins Dantonio has put up the last few years, I honestly think this year's team is the only one that deserves a ton of national respect.
