Reason for English’s early dismissal(link)
English used foul language apparently.
Yes, he did. http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20131109/SPORTS0203/311090049/
I guess we can call him "Bad English".

but I would love to know how many of the Michigan "fans" who wanted English to hired were hammering RR for using similar language.

let it effing go

Um, I think foul language was about the least of anyone's concerns during the RichRod years.

at how upset/nasty people were towards his family because of things like language and his wife's hair style.

I believe that. Dude was frightening to watch from the stands of his first spring game. He was 15 yards onto the field and you could hear him from 40 rows up. Not saying it's a bad thing or that he should be fired for it (or that it was even the real reason), but I would take their word on it that a tape exists.
November 9th, 2013 at 2:33 PM ^
What was he saying? No coach gets fired for dropping F-bombs in practice, so he must have said something over the line...
November 9th, 2013 at 2:45 PM ^
My story was during his time at Michigan. A safety (I believe it was Stevie Brown, not entirely sure) was not filling the alley hard enough on a run play before, and this was after a string of 4-5 yard carries against the defense, so Ron English kindly reminded him of what his job was and at what intensity he should be completing his job at. F Bombs dropped for emphasis.
I don't think this was the real reason for the firing, as I agree that coaches don't get fired for dropping F bombs. It was about performance. Bo Pelini basically told his fan base to F off (for leaving early) after a win against OSU, and he didn't get the boot for that.

This is a risk management call by a media sensitive, first-big-decision AD.

to a college whose football coach has a winning record, something English lacked.

This is amateur hour, power trip athletics administration at its finest.

and Kansas' situations. The outrage over NOT firing Rice and Mangino when these abuses came to light caused PR nightmares for the respective schools. EMU is also dealing with the negative PR of Demarius Reed's murder.
November 9th, 2013 at 8:04 PM ^
You're probably not gonna read this, but I don't think this is power tripping. He was probably gonna get fired at the end of the season, and this is a non-football "reason" to fire him. The same thing that just happened to Carl Pelini at FAU, blowing up a tiny thing, and now they won't have to pay him more of his money
November 9th, 2013 at 2:31 PM ^
It's time to can him, too! English's record is enough to justify letting him go, no need to take a shot at his character and professionalism. If Eastern Michigan is really interested in improving the student-athlete experience, they'd drop out of FBS and join an FCS conference where they might be able to compete.
November 9th, 2013 at 2:36 PM ^
the reality is that if they did their other sports in which they are highly competitive woud have to drop as well. No more MAC for EMU athletics.
EMU ranks third all time in the MAC for league titles won. EMU athletics is doing well except for the two highest profile sports.

Here's the statement, per SBNation and MLive:
November 9th, 2013 at 2:34 PM ^
In all liklihood it was the context in which he used the profanity rather than the profanity itself. In my mind, saying a profanity and calling someone a profanity are two different things. If he did the latter then I would agree with his dismissal.
Either way, he was likely to get fired at the end of the season due to his teams poor record. Too bad for him, but coaches get fired all the time. I hope he lands a DC job somewhere.
November 9th, 2013 at 2:34 PM ^
I would be a little upset with a team that bad, too.
November 9th, 2013 at 2:46 PM ^
is responsible for putting that team together?
November 9th, 2013 at 2:43 PM ^
Once the losing gets so bad, and the players stop believing in the coach, it's all over. In that clip it sounds like Coach English stopped believing in the team too.

that's why RR got fired, lol. that dude could swear like no other.
November 9th, 2013 at 2:56 PM ^
"It also sounds like English used a derogatory word for gay."
Simply lambasting your team doesn't get you fired before the season ends. Calling your players faggots or whatever derogatory term he used will.
Given the stuff he was saying to his players, it looks like he'd completely lost them anyhow and knew the end was near for him.

My high school coach gave more offensive speeches than that.
November 9th, 2013 at 3:13 PM ^
Heh, from the Detroit News context it sounds like the AD is just a baby. I bet most FBS coaches would be fired if this guy was their AD.
November 9th, 2013 at 3:16 PM ^
Really hard to hear what the heck is being said here.
If English had known that someone was taping it, would he have said the same things?
November 9th, 2013 at 3:18 PM ^
of paying his contract?

Sounds like he used the term "bitch" a bunch, which I guess is what is being referred to as the gay slur.
Given that pretty much every episode of South Park is more offensive than this speech, I'm surprised this got him fired. I have to believe that if the W's and L's on his record were flipped this wouldn't be happening.
