BBrown: Quick Update With 2015 TE Cole Chewins
2015 TE Cole Chewins (Clarkston HS - Clarkston, MI) took in a Michigan practice on Saturday and I was able to exchange some texts with him about it to see how it went.
Chance of an offer:
They said they want to see a couple of games this year and see if I can add some more weight before they make a decision. They said they are looking for me to be 240 lbs. by the time I graduate. (Chewins is 6'7", 210 lbs.)
The visit:
It was great! I talked with Coach Ferrigno and Coach Hecklinski and they would like me to come back out this fall for a game. I also had a chance to talk with Coach Hoke and Coach Borges for a little bit. I really liked practice because it was high intensity and uptempo. I'm looking forward to being back out for a game this fall!
Chewins was really excited about the visit and the possibility of a return visit. The fact that he visited with every important coach as a tight end is a sign that he is a likely candidate to receive an offer. He is built in a very similar mold as 2014 TE commitment Ian Bunting with his long, lean frame. He is definitely one to keep an eye on in the 2015 class as it projects as a very small class.

Whoa, this is like the old days when Tom would do quick recruiting updates like this. Great feature to have again!

I hope to do these often. This will be good, quick, small stuff in between the bigger, full-length interviews. Summer is about over and my routine will be pretty regular heading into the fall.

We appreciate it.

Well, I already can't get any work done with the amount of content already out there. Now, thanks to you, I won't be able to sleep either.

This is such a nice little feature to have it. Keep it up.

Michigan looks to have the tallest TE tandems in the country fairly soon.

What're the odds that Michigan will take both Chewins and Wheatley, Jr.? Would they project Wheatley to DE?
August 12th, 2013 at 11:04 PM ^
It is possible that they would take both but it will be tough with such a small class. Wheatley Jr. seems to be option #1 at TE which is why the coaches were very open with Chewins about the possibility of offering.

Smaller than the 2014 class?
August 13th, 2013 at 7:57 AM ^
Right now UM has 13 scholarships available for 2015 if all of the RS Juniors (there are 5 of them) return in 2014 for their senior season, which I believe is unlikely. I would guess that the class is no bigger than 16 in 2015 unless there is an unexpectedly large amount of attrition.

unless more spots open. The 2015 class is BPA and their are alot of GREAT players that want Michigan offers. GO BLUE

Make it him eat what Derrick Green has been eating!
August 12th, 2013 at 11:21 PM ^
And what specifically might you suggest?
August 13th, 2013 at 8:34 AM ^
but I think Green's diet consists of linebackers with the occasional safety tossed in for added crunch.

I hope we are recruiting him hard because, until we find a TE recruit who is 7'3" and furry, this will be our best opportunity to have a dedicated Michigan student cheering section dressed fully in Chewbacca costumes.

Was thinking the same thing.

Moar 8 foot tall 200 year old recruits!

We're about to put a basketball team on the gridiron in a couple years

It'll be basketball on grass...

Them's Hoke words.

Means they likely would see him up around 250-260. He could play H-TE or Y-TE at that point, but it seems and would make sense for them to be looking for more of a Y-TE in the '15 class. Wheatley has to be option one there though.

a 6'7" H. wouldn't seem to work with most offensive schemes that i ever played in.

If Borges has a formation without a RB on the field, every MIchigan player on the field would be 6'4" or taller. The center could be the shortest person on the field.

this is a lock. Clarkston High features a certain winged helmet, so obviously.

6'7" TE ?
Damn the game has changed...
August 13th, 2013 at 12:55 PM ^
Game's the same, just got more fierce.
August 14th, 2013 at 10:23 AM ^
Haha. This is perfect. Nice find.
August 13th, 2013 at 9:46 AM ^
Here is the Hudl.com highlight reel for Chewins - the whole 6'7'' thing makes him rather difficult to miss on the field...
August 14th, 2013 at 10:22 AM ^
6'7" is just ridiculous. I can't believe that. It seems so unfair to opposing teams. Getting to 240 shouldn't be a problem for a kid with that size.

good stuff!
