MBB: UM vs. Penn State Open Thread.

I always think 'oh no, he's going to fall like 3 feet short of the basket' then he basically floats to a layup.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:19 PM ^
It would be nice if we could get charge calls too.

looks pissed. Wouldn't want to be a player in that locker room right now.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:21 PM ^
I'm finally coming around. The charge call may have run its course, time to get rid of it. Plus BIG ten refs are horrible.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:20 PM ^
Need to just pull up and bank that one off the window, instead of lowering your shoulder into a guy already planted. Would've been a great momentum killer.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:20 PM ^
I REALLY WISH STAUSKAS WOULD GET A T THERE. 2 straight bs "charges" on him. You could hear him say "are you kidding me?" audibly.

Penn State on par to score 20+ above their conference average against us, again. Ugh. I also feel like every single game I hear about how are turning the ball over much more than our season average... at some point doesn't our average go up?
February 27th, 2013 at 7:31 PM ^
No. Our average stays the same no matter what.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:20 PM ^
We'd be up 8-10 if we weren't lazy in the first half. I don't think Beilein will allow that to happen in the 2nd.

Part of me thinks JB will go all, "if you're not in it, you're pulled." But another part things he will go all Al Gorgeous and go, "give it time; it'll work . . ."

Hire our own full-time referees. The B1G makes too much money not to be able to have their own full-time refs in football and hoops. If the Big East could go to 6 personal fouls for a couple years, we should be able to lobby to have our own refs.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:24 PM ^
What i would give for the NCAA to go to 6 fouls
February 27th, 2013 at 7:25 PM ^
Nice idea in theory, but then where do they come from.
No good referee is going to willingly limit his number of games by agreeing to only work the B10. Therefore, you're stuck with the refs who are willing to do that and they certainly will be bottom of the barrel.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:31 PM ^
According to Outside the Lines back in 2010 (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/otl/news/story?id=5581117)
This quote from the article: "The average Division I ref might make $50,000 a year, if he can officiate 40 to 60 games a season, but that's before taxes -- and that earning power goes away the minute a guy is injured or sick or can't work for whatever reason."
This is referring to college basketball, but I'd let this be the starting point in the conversation. I think the B1G should at least look into it.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:35 PM ^
Interesting. The B10, however, gets the top officials in the game. Guys that routinely work 80-90 games and thus are making closer to $80,000+ a year.
Can we really pay the top X officials 80k a year to work only 20-30 games each?
I don't see the referees going for it. Especially considering working only B10 games is going to affect their upward mobility (re: working the national tournament).
February 27th, 2013 at 7:40 PM ^
But I'd be happy if there's at least a conversation about it. There's too much money involved now to not think about it.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:23 PM ^
drive me nuts with their inconsistency....and so does our BBall team for that matter

They have a shot at a BIG championship and that's the type of effort in the first half. Also, what does it take for Coach B to figure out he needs to cover the inbounder at the end of the half? 4.1 seconds and they give up an 8 foot jumper. Good thing PSU doesn't shoot all that well.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:26 PM ^
That halftime announcer is annoying. Haters gonna hate.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:26 PM ^
Jim Jackson is annoying. Sorry your son isn't on our team.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:26 PM ^
Those two charging calls on Stauskas were garbage.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:27 PM ^
Here's the shooting at halftime:
FG% | 3FG% | FT% | Eff. FG% | |
MICHIGAN | 53.6% | 22.2% | 87.5% | 57.1% |
PENN STATE | 41.9% | 50.0% | 71.4% |
50.0% |
We've got eight offensive rebounds and eighteen overall, which is a much better pace than last week. We could stand a few less turnovers in the second half (10 compared to Penn State's 7), but otherwise very competitive and, from an offensive standpoint, in Michigan's favor. Having Morgan out there definitely helps - he was responsible for half of the offensive rebounds last week despite playing less than half the game, although McGary has the most of anyone tonight.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:31 PM ^
PSU not ending up at 50% from the 3 at the end of the game. Sure we leave em wide open, but, just no.

Stat of the half: 10 turnovers by Michigan. That just isn't tolerable. Should be rectified.

Cut the turnovers down and hit a couple threes. I think we still hit Kenpom's prediction.
Trying to figure out our 3-pt defense here....
Our rotations are often too slow or too late. I think what we're really missing is that on-the-ball defender that can recover from the ball screen quick enough so we don't have to wait on rotating back into place.
I won't be surprised to see some 2-3 in the second half.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:32 PM ^
February 27th, 2013 at 7:33 PM ^
That's because our defense is lousy.
February 27th, 2013 at 7:36 PM ^
February 27th, 2013 at 7:34 PM ^
Better yet, let's improve our rotations so we aren't giving up so many open shots in the first place.
