It really annoys me to watch players such as zettel or dee hart playing for other teams. Dawson would be just there, but only worst since he's from cass tech and he would be playing for a rival.
November 29th, 2012 at 9:45 PM ^
As long as the coaches are good with it, so am I. Dawson didn't act very mature, but he is a 17 year old kid, and our coaches should treat him as such. Giving him a second chance is the right thing to do.

Sam Webb reporting visits @ Ohio on Dec. 7th, Bama on Jan. 11th and Sparty Jan. 18th as well. We should be good to stay the course, so to speak.

There may not be a spot open for him after Dec 14
November 29th, 2012 at 10:25 PM ^
Ah, of course, of course. If that's the case, so be it. I just don't want Hoke swaying too much in regards to his policy. Little room for much flexibility in this case, IMO. Just gotta handle Dawson tenuously is all.
November 30th, 2012 at 5:32 AM ^
And just what evidence have you seen that would suggest that Hoke could sway on his policy?
November 29th, 2012 at 9:49 PM ^
that what must have happened is that he decommitted so he could look at Florida, then didn't like it as much as he thought and realized he wanted to stay close to home, but realized there are really only a few high level schools in the Midwest and would end up back here.

Here's my best understanding/guess of "the policy," which could be completely wrong.
If you are offered a scholarship to Michigan, you commit, and you keep your grades up and yourself out of trouble, the coaches will honor that original offer. Even if you have a bad season or something - or a sexier recruit comes along - they won't drop you because they found someone they like better.
If you visit another school, you no longer have that guarantee. Michigan might still recruit you, but they'll only do so if they think you're a good option at the moment. If someone else takes your spot in the meantime, so be it.
Basically, I think people are incorrect when they say that the policy is "visit elsewhere --> can't go to Michigan." I think it's more "visit elsewhere --> give up your guaranteed spot --> we'll see what happens."

This is how it is, and it has been very advantageous for Hoke thus far. I don't want people to get the wrong impression because I respect and advocate our recruiting principles; I just want to see Hoke stand his ground at the same time because, if he does not; future, more costly predicaments could arise.
Maybe I'm just being cynical or semantical, and I do want Dawson (he is such an integral addition to our OL class), however; I think a recruit should understand, thoroughly, what entails their commitment to Michigan. I believe most do, and honestly hope Dawson is an exception, respectively, because in the future, I think Hoke should deny a recommitment.
It's really out of fairness. Cause in Turd's words, there technically really isn't a "policy".
November 30th, 2012 at 9:10 AM ^
I think a lot of it has to do with how "Being Committed" leads to "Taking other visits".
If a commit talks to the coaches about how they were his first offer, he jumped on it, didn't really do his research and wants to see what other schools have to offer (Conley), he'll fall in the "You're no longer committed, but thanks for handling this in an up front manner, we're no longer saving you a spot in this class, but we still want you at Michigan".
If a commit doesn't talk to the coaches and books a trip to another school, like Oregon (Pharoah Brown) without telling the coaches anything, the recruit has burned that bridge, he is no longer a commit and the coaches won't recruit him anymore.
With Dawson it seems like there was a little from column A, a little from B, and at the end the coaches are still recruting him.

Our good friend Tom VH providing a little insight on his twitter...
"OL David Dawson had a "heart-to-heart" with Brady Hoke tonight and was re-offered by Michigan".
November 29th, 2012 at 11:37 PM ^
I would love to know how this meeting with Hoke came about. Does David go to coach Wilcher and say I really want to talk to Michigan again can you arrange something with coach Hoke so I can tell him. Does David pick up the phone and call and tell them himself...or does Hoke just pop in and say we've heard you've had a change of heart and may want to come back into the fold. I hope someone on the inside let's us know how all this came about.
November 29th, 2012 at 11:57 PM ^
I'm guessing most likely a phone call.
Nov. 27-Dec 17 and then again in Jan. is conisdered the "contact period" in the recruiting calendar.
Coaches can make unlimted amount of calls to seniors during the "contact period"

Boy, this is interesting. I also see now OSU has offered Lacy. I would love to have Dawson back because based on his camp tapes last summer he seemed like the most ready OL and seems very strong and tough. But, this whole back and forth has been odd to say the least. From the comments I have seen from Dawson it didn't seem like he was too happy with UM fans, not that I can blame him, but I guess it still surprises me that he still wants to come to UM. And, it makes you wonder about the whole no visit policy now. Wouldn't it be really weird if both Conley and Dawson came back?

When he left, and Michigan didn't really say anything.
It's more like the fans are the people who buy the tabloids to find out what's going on with the latest celebrity couple, whether it's real or not.

November 29th, 2012 at 10:22 PM ^
I'll make an exception though, assuming you are close enough to the situation to have first-hand knowlege.
How about sharing "the rule" with us. Exactly and verbatim, with no "I think, I heard, or it seems".

This is great news. The Michigan football I know and love is built around interior offensive linemen named Dave. Daves Brandt, Baas, Pearson, Petruziello, Moosman, and Molk would be happy to hear this.
November 29th, 2012 at 10:47 PM ^
1 - the coaches offer you.
2 - you commit, they honor your commitment.
3 - you don't commit, coaches hold it until they're full.
4 - you commit and take visits and notify the coaches beforehand that you want to, a la Conley. Coaches understand but no longer consider you a recruit. Maybe they keep your offer and recruit you, maybe not.
5 - you commit and deceive the coaches about not taking visits a la Pharaoh Brown and David Dawson. You are no longer considered a recruit by the staff similar to step #4 and they likely pull an offer. The staff evaluates whether to offer you based on factors individual to your situation, and decides whether to continue to recruit and/or offer you. Pharaoh = Ohio kid without M ties and a number of other family factors we don't know about. Dawson = kid that dreamed of playing at M prior to getting an offer, accepted immediately, dad died, and a number of other family factors we don't know about.
Rinse and repeat step 1.
Everyone circle jerks each other about how much better of a fanbase we are than fanbase X but this simple concept seems to spawn increasingly ridiculous discussion everytime it's brought up.

You said you don't understand what is so hard to understand, but to explain it you had to type up a 4 page essay. Kind of answered your own question there, no?
November 29th, 2012 at 10:54 PM ^
Doesn't Hoke's no-visit policy simply mean that if a recruit commits, and then decides to take visits to other schools, then UM no longer considers him a commit and his spot is once again open to other offered recruits?
Dawson isn't considered a commit right now -- and I'm assuming another offered OL recruit could still commit and grab his former spot -- so I guess I'm unclear why this situation would be thought of as Hoke bending the rules of his policy.
