OT-NFL Replacement Refs
Ok i have had enough of teh replacement refs to last a lifetime. If anyone else watched the end of the Packers-Seahawk game you know what i am talking about.
For one, there was a obvious offensive PI that was called defensive PI against the Packers. This keeps the Seahawk drive alive. Then the last play of the game was hailmary for Seattle, first it was the most obvious offensive PI i have seen, Tate obviously pushed Shields down. No call on this. Then Jennings intercepts the ball and Tate wrestles the ball away from Jennings on the ground. Replay clearly shows that Jennings had possession and Tate pulled it away on the ground. To top it all off, one ref signaled touchdown while the other signaled touchback as though Shields intercepted the ball in the end zone.
Fucking bullshit calls just cost the Packers a game. NFL pay the refs to avoid this embarrassment that we are currently calling the NFL.

A lot of people are saying that, but I'm not buying it. You get about two to three weeks worth of football in a year. Can you really step away?

turned a moderately entertaining game into one of the most entertaining...things...i've seen in a while. that "thing" just wasn't football
September 25th, 2012 at 12:18 AM ^
Hahaha, I completely agree. Watching the train wreck on SportsCenter after is priceless. The NFL is better than your average dramedy right now.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:35 AM ^
I like to think that "dramedy" is not what the NFL is going for.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:41 AM ^
but I think they're only going for that $$$$$$$
September 25th, 2012 at 12:45 AM ^
The dramedy shtick will only work for so long.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:14 AM ^
I know that seems so clearly an interception... but don't count on change coming soon.
If you recall during the last World Cup in South Africa, the ball went across the line and was seen by about 1 billion people but wasn't called a goal, which is simpler than even this decision and yet years later, there is still no procedure in place.
The referees who are working this game - are they regular college referees? Are the usual Big Ten referees already committed? I heard on talk radio that these were from a lower tier but wondered if anyone knew.

They're not even the better D3 refs. These jobs are a career-ending move; the better small-college officials hope for eventual advancement and weren't interested.

Why the fuck is Russell Wilson on during the highlights on ESPN? This is the least subtle job of spin control by the NFL I've ever seen. Goddell is drunk with power and is doing his best job to kill the NFL. Tonight is a perfect example of why the NFL is nothing but background noise at this point. It's just become a huge fucking joke with the owners and commissioner choking the life out of the game. It's not even fun anymore.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:19 AM ^
McCarthy is handling this admirably. I'd love to see Rex Ryan or Jim Harbaugh handle this situation.

The guy is a tyrant who only knows how to alienate people, not how to get anyone to get along. He drives a wedge between everyone--the players, the owners, the officials--and the league will suffer for it.

It is Goodell, but I think you're on the right track. He does think he's GODdell. With the recent rule changes, divisive mood, and refereeing problems, the NFL isn't smooth sailing.
I used to be able to enjoy NFL games, but the league is slowly changing into some sort of NBA-hybrid; more scoring, more superstars, more music, more explosions, more noice, more passing, more made-up drama, more strippers (I mean "cheerleaders"), less defense, less character, less tradition, less substance, less analysis, less meaning.

As the name makes clear I have a dog in this fight but I don't think I have ever seen that kind of cascade of inexplicable calls. From "roughing the passer" to OPI 1 to OPI 2 to the int/td. I almost feel bad for these guys, they are supposed to be reffing high school and they can't be expected to do this, but man, that was brutal.
I'm a bit upset that the inexplicable int/td call is getting all the press. It's important people realize that every call in the last five minutes was blown. But man, if I'm the head on the real referees union, I am feeling good right now. Goodell will be on the phone with them within the hour offering them everything they want and more.

Whoops. One post for each time the Packers got screwed on the last play.

September 25th, 2012 at 12:34 AM ^
One ref signals touchdown the other starts to indicate int by waving both hands.
September 25th, 2012 at 9:46 AM ^
As I see the replay, the ref who signals TD is looking at the other ref, thinks he's going to signal TD, and raises his own hands. No communication.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:33 AM ^
wait till it happens to your team. This was an abomination tonight. Yes the Packers played horribly offensively but didn't they come alive in the 2nd half to take the lead? Held the lead AND CLEARLY WON WITH THE LEAD!? I don't even want to hear "oh they had their chances." BOTTOM LINE: This was not a game won by Seattle a pre mature TD call gets the win? What if this happened to Michigan? What would you say then? This is beyond bull shit and I have had enough. I'll watch my Packers but anybody else on Thursday night or Sunday come Monday night if it's not Green Bay I won't even watch. There should be an asterisk next to Seattle's win. This was the downfall of the NFL as a league tonight and I'm sick of this.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:33 AM ^
The refs are fine. Next question.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:35 AM ^
but i wish this had happened to a different team, only because mccarthy stayed way too classy.
had this been harbaugh, rex ryan, bb, or almost any other coach...the entertainment for the night would only just be starting.
if they're gonna make this a soap opera, then queme los barcos!!
September 25th, 2012 at 9:51 AM ^
This is a great point. The league is actually very lucky that this happened to a team coached by McCarthy, who seems to hold not losing his cool higher than almost any other emotion. Imagine if this was Harbaugh...
But still you have players tweeting "Fuck the NFL," creating hashtags like "#RogerGoodellSucks," and facetiously suggesting wildcat strikes. Goodell's managed to call the entire league into disrepute, and yet he'll still continue to fine and suspend players for conduct he determines to damage the NFL. He's done the worst thing a commissioner can do, he's become the story. He's going to get booed worse than Gary Bettman anytime he appears at a stadium.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:36 PM ^
Goodell has a long way to go to play as big a joke on the NFL as the Phoenix Coyotes.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:40 AM ^
2-3 more weeks, tops. If this continues, all holy hell is going to break loose in the media, and the NFL will cave. We can't be having half a dozen dumpster fires all over the league every Sunday afternoon.
September 25th, 2012 at 12:40 AM ^
Maybe ill just stream games to my cpu and hook up the HDMI cable. Take that Goodell! /s (?).

September 25th, 2012 at 12:42 AM ^
the league officials union just gained more

September 25th, 2012 at 9:11 AM ^
I'm not so sure they have. People can point to blown calls and whatnot, but at the end of the day, all this is doing is raising TV viewership for the NFL. If that's a normal game, nobody's talking about it today, even though it's "MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBAWWW".
But now? You've got everybody clicking on stories about it, everyone's gonna be watching future games to see what might happen, writing about it. And all of that has the good fortune of pushing concussions and Bountygate right off the Radar and away from Goodell. As long as a league is playing games, there's no such thing as bad press.
Yeah it means Goodell is a dick, and the integrity of the NFL will be watered down, but they're probably gonna make even more money, and that's all that's really important for them

He also said, he just went in the endzone and competed. After that Rick Riley said, "I guess competing is cheating."
