Redd transfering to USC

Official now, Redd's dad confirmed to Joe Schad.
I don't even think he left in a bad way.
No one expected the USC job to open up when it did.
It took him by surprise as much as anyway and so it made it look worse than it was. But in reality, he was just handed a golden opportunity that he didn't expect. It would be like one of us having a scholarship to play for Wisconsin (Division 1 school, successful, etc.) and then at the last moment having our dream school (Michigan) offer us. You'd take it every time, even if it left a few hurt feelings in Wisconsin.
To see the dark side of fandom, take a look at BSD and vow never to be "that guy".
I don't remember fans really giving high profile players who transferred a hard time except for Justin Boren. Considering he trashed the program on his way out to transfer to Ohio, I think he also brought a lot of it on himself.
But I thought the general feeling was people wished Ryan Mallett well even though it left a gaping hole at QB that Michigan paid dearly for in 2008.
I think so too, but that could have been because Mallett and Rodriguez so clearly didn't fit together that it seemed almost inevitable.
I'm pretty sure neither Miles nor Harbaugh would have kept him. He was a poison to the team. Go back to the Illinois game in 2007 and watch Manningham and Mallett get into it on the sideline. In the same game, watch Carr (his typical hohum self) call Mallett over to talk to him about a turnover he just committed. Mallett rolls his eyes and walks away while Carr is still speaking, prompting Carr to flip out, spin Mallett around, and lay into the kid. It was awesome

Most of them stuck it out, and a number of them went on to do great things. Chris Perry comes to mind. I wouldn't doubt Braylon got it either with all the time he spent in the doghouse his first THREE years. Someone being a cocky jackass as a freshman wasn't something only Mallett did.
Penn State's rushing game will now be in the hands of a sophomore (converted WR who caught exactly one pass as a receiver) who has taken all of 13 snaps to date, so the offense could be fun in State College. Losing Redd is a pretty significant hit certainly. O'Brien might be able to piece an offense together, but it just became much harder.
In reality, it's like RB grad school. Brighter lights, more glitter, taste of Hollywood/ big market media. And, oh yes, the ladies....
A no brainer.
All the best to the kid. And, PSU is lucky there was not a total exodus. They deserved to be shut down.
As it is, I bet the civil settlements/judgements set them back hundreds of millions. That will leave a mark.
They won't get back to where they were in football for a decade, if ever. And, even that was less than spectacular.
I have nothing of substance to contribute to this discussion, but I just saw this GIF and couldn't not post it here.
Can't say I blame him. He wants to play for championships, and PSU is a trainwreck right now. He's got a chance to play for a national title, and even had this scandal never happened, PSU is in no shape to play for a title anytime soon.
I can certainly understand if PSU fans are pissed, but even having Redd return would not change the team's fortunes that much.
Kevin Haplea, probably Penn State's best returning TE, is leaving Happy Valley.
Evidently he was #2 on the depth chart, but after this week, depth at the skill positions is going to be quite a problem for PSU, and that's only this year. It's going to get worse with graduation attrition, more transfers later, and who knows what will happen over the coming months with recruits.
Just got a notification from the ESPN scorecenter app that Kevin Haplea chose Florida State.
Lane Kiffen: Sometimes even assholes win at life.
I don't think it's just sometimes.
Best of luck to Mr. Redd and lets hope the team will face him in the Rose Bowl.
Did Hoke try and recruit Redd? I hope that he at least gave him a courtesy call to gauge his interest.
Then no. He didn't.
He has stated his desire to be a one-and-done player. In other words, pretend he's a senior (which is why USC can take him). He would be a perfect compliment to Fitz (and perhaps a 200+ carry guy if Fitz got hurt).
Oh well. Water under the bridge.
I don't think anyone does, and I don't think the NCAA has said anything about it.

I believe they can't exceed their scholarship limit to take a PSU player, as non-probationary schools can.

In addition to Silas Redd, the following players are also tranferring from Penn State:
Rob Bolden (LSU)
Khairi Fortt (California)
Kevin Haplea (FSU)
Jamil Pollard (Rutgers)
Tim Buckley (NC State)
- Penn State's 2010 recruiting class has just been demolished. It was originally a class of 19 commits. Their 3 highest rated players transferred this week and only 11 players are still on the roster from the class. Should be interesting when Penn State comes back on Michigan's schedule next year as Michigan's 2010 class has had a similar fate--only 15 of the original 27 commits are still left on the roster. Both teams will be extremely young in 2013.
but I doubt it's going to be very challenging.
We will hear the lamentation of their women.
