Urban: "I wouldn't say a great class; we have some marginal guys in there"

Submitted by Bronson on

I realize that some of the stuffier types who frequent this board will no doubt lament the fact that some anti-OSU content has been put forth as a forum topic (perish the thought).  Nevertheless, I thought it might be interesting to highlight Urban Meyer's ongoing attempts to be ultimately crowned Lord of all Douchebags.  I'm sure none of the incoming recruits he's referencing, to say nothing of future recruits, will be put off by the insinuation that if they weren't labeled 5 stars by either Scout or Rivals (i.e., Urban's infallible recruiting Almanacs), then they aren't fit to play for the Co-Ed Banger.  Is this something anyone could see Hoke saying?

http://forums.the-ozone.net/messages/300088.html

Added bonus:  sifting through the comments beneath the quote, it seems that a not insignificant percentage of the Hillbilly Mafia have taken issue with the language used.  I had to rub the sleep out of my eyes, my disbelief was so staggering.  The ripples of birthing discontent are subtle, but palpable...

Does Hoke think every kid in this year's class is going to be an All-American? No. But it remains douchey to SAY so.

It's like a parent with a couple of bright kids and a couple of dumb ones. Sure, they might know that little Timmy isn't destined for Harvard, and they might even discuss it amongst themselves. But you wouldn't say so in the goddamn family Christmas letter.

I bet ole Urbie will try to flip it and say he was saying that for motivation purposes. That's the only excuse I can see him using that might work. On the other hand, if I'm a recruit in this class I would feel crappy hearing my head coach refer to me and my future teammates like that.

but motivation should be done inside the walls, not in front of a mic.  If I was his p.r. guy, I would do damage control by using the metaphor that recruits are like sex with women:  They're all good, but some are just better than others.

As one of the more vocal people who has questioned/complained about the seemingly hourly Meyer posts I must clarify a few misconceptions:

One, my biggest "issue" is when we post crap that if it were any other coach we wouldn't bat an eye.  Posts like "Meyer to mentiion Michigan at 5:30pm today" make me cringe cause they strike me as insanely needy and borderline obsessive.

Two, I cannot stand the villification of him (or any other opposing coach for that matter) when they do something that actually should be praise-worthy or at least not considered somehow evil because they did it.  Case in point here was the Jamal Berry post where he was castigated for kicking a thug with two run-in's with the law recently off the team.  That's bad?

Three, I can only speak for myself but the Urban "Liar" meme was old from the first day it hit the board and is like fingers on a blackboard to me anyways.  He have no clue what he said to any recruit and the implication that he lied to get kids is beyond presumptious.  Again, it makes me feel like we're a kid who is sure his rival lied to get the girl....i mean why else would she be with him and not me?

Four, when he does do something stupid and worthy of ridicule (like this for example) I have zero issue with the post.  Hell, I enjoy I reading it as much as anybody else.  I, like most other posters in the thread cannot believe he would say that stupid and hurtful to his own recruits publically - even if it's true.  Heck...especially if it's true you don't say it.  That's a horrible thing to say about your players, especially when they havent even taken a snap yet.

The defense representing the stuffy crowd rests.

He's probably saying that about some of Tressel's recruits because he didn't recruit them, but he had to keep them because who can poach 25 guys from different schools every year? With OSU's recruiting restrictions over the next few years, I'm sure half those guys won't be on the team within two years.

I didn't think I could hate OSU anymore but hearing this makes it easy too. Honestly, what a douche move on his part. He should never be saying that about his players even if it is true.

Urban's gonna implode.  He's gonna be the anti-RichRod.  He's gonna have troubles because he is clueless of the position he just stepped in, but where RichRod's sin was naivete, Urban's undoing will be brazen arrogance.

Not a surprising difference though, when you consider that one was a BMOC from the Big East, and one was a BMOC from the SEC.

I'm pretty sure if anyone had pictures of such things, Urban Meyer would currently be the HC at Little Sisters of the Poor.

Furthermore- as soon as the tasteless references to Hoke's weight cease on their end, and the desires stated that he soon die of type 2 diabetes, I'll desist in referring to the rumors that Meyer liked to stick his pen in the company ink, so to speak.  I personally don't feel the two are remotely comparable, but I realize I may be a blackened kettle, I'll fall on that sword.

This guy is a treasure chest of sound clips.  Im sure he told parents in living rooms, that their children were marginal but he would love to have them there.  If i were a parent that would be something I would LOVE to hear.  Thank god my child can play for the one and only Urban Meyer, even if he is marginal.  I for one am A-OK with marginal guys like Jake Ryan with real coaches who mold those guys into well rounded footballers.  Comforting to know that coaches see talent and take the time to be just that.  Coaches.  Again, the Michigan Difference.  I have a feeling Urbz big mouth won't sit well in the Big Ten.

Since the post and all the followups are dated, the post being dated 2/10/12, as well as the followups clearly discussing Urban at OSU and this year's class, i think that it isn't from 1990.

...though, yeah, it looks like everybody logged in through their AOL account 22 years ago.

Pointing out that Urban is a douchebag is a lot like pointing out every time a spartan football player claims police brutality...There are no shortage of opportunities, but after a while it becomes redundant.

Yeah Urbs comments seem pretty douchetastic to me, it's also a backhanded comment towards Fickell and the rest of the staff that brought in the "marginal" talent.  But holy cow there are some non-spelling folks that represent the buckeye nation, must all be tsiO graduates.

If he doesn't learn to filter out comments like this one, he won't have all buckeye fans behind him. Believe it or not, there are some smart and classy buckeyes out there who are and will be turned off by comments like this one. (I work with a PhD from OSU)  Of course if he wins big, they might not complain much.  I can't wait to hear Meyer's post-game comments after a loss, especially to "that school up north" he referred to, when the emotions and thoughts may be harder to keep in check.

Is any team in the country going to have worse chemistry than OSU? Throw together a bunch of guys in two weeks that have virtually no relationship with the coach or each other, then tell some of them they should't even be there.  Smart move.

Wow. Although I've defended the OSU and MSU posts, I've been slow to buy into the idea that Meyer is sleazy. I think I'm there now. Honestly, has there ever been a time when the gap in integrity between our coach and our three big rivals' coaches (Meyer, Dantonio, Kelly) has been this vast? I feel like even most of those fans acknowledge that Hoke is a classy guy.

It has got to the point that every time Urban opens his mouth I'm left wondering how he can out-douche his last comment. Here he is doing it again though. Here's to hoping his team remains "marginal"

Does every single Tsio fan online have to have the word "Buck" or some variation of it in their handle/avatar?  is it a requirement to be a fan?  the lack of creativity spells out how feeble minded they are.  and now they are led by  King Feeble Meyer himself.  DERP

I think it's beyond awesome that one of his obvious targets is from the Boren clan. I wonder what Uncle @#$%nuts (that is, father of Justin) will say?

Honestly, I don't have a problem with Urban saying this.  Yes, its d-baggy.  However,  i'd much rather a coach be straight-up about where his players stand with him than a player think they are safe only to have their scholarship not renewed at the end of the year.

Its a crappy way to motivate someone, but I'm sure Urb doesn't care about whether they feel a little pressure if it pushes them to work harder this offseason.

It's a great way to motivate some players.  Other players priobably need to hear things like "I see something in you that the recruiting services didn't, and that's why you're here, and I will love watching you prove them all wrong for the next four years."  I figured one of the thing a good coach/ assistant coach does is figure out what worksand apply it as needed.

Blazefire

Yes, definitely be straight up. As in, "I'm glad you're here, and I think you can really help us out, but you're gonna have to put in the work to do so. You need to improve in these areas to see the field."

Not, "You're marginal. You're not that great."

But did anyone else notice this exchange?

The Tressel era is officially over. * - The Governor [19:27:50 02/10/12]
So what. Save some of your wisdom after Meyer has one as many games at OSU as Tressel did** - rr1954 [19:33:44 02/10/12]
wun * - Buck Martini [20:23:02 02/10/12]

wun* is used to grammatically correct someone who has said "one". Is that tongue-in-cheek? I can't tell. Nobody questions it. I know it's OSU, but come on...

I don't think the Buckeye nation will care what he says as long as he wins games. Just saying.

Though I will laugh when he leaves OSU in a few years for one reason or another. His dream job is Notre Dame.

Hey Meyer, Rich Rod already tried that "I'll say out loud the first thing that pops into my head, what could possibly go wrong?" stuff.

Didn't work.
