Chip Kelly supposedly working on a deal to become next head coach of Tampa Bay Bucs...wtf?
Per some twitter reports, Chip Kelly will be the next coach at Tampa Bay. I find this absurd. It makes me wonder if some serious sanctions are coming the Ducks way.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:18 PM ^
That would crack me up. But I think he's trying to hit the road before any NCAA sanctions head their way
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:33 PM ^
yeah it'd quack me up too. ahahahaha!! :D
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:27 PM ^
Lol, I read it as quack as well. Very surprising news. I am actually disappointed to here this because that makes USC's season that much easier and they are going to be stacked.
January 22nd, 2012 at 10:30 PM ^
This sounds like the Pete Carroll exit maneuver. One step ahead of the NCAA po-lice. Kelly is probably thinking that it's too bad the Seahawks job wasn't available.

January 23rd, 2012 at 12:09 AM ^
If true, that would suck for Pharaoah Brown.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:19 PM ^
Do you guys think he'll try to run the same offense there Assuming he would take the job? I find that hard to believe.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:23 PM ^
His offense is the only reason he's successful.
January 22nd, 2012 at 10:10 PM ^
You basically just said the only reason he is successful is because he's a good coach......

Why would sanctions coming to Oregon affect the sanity of the Bucs' GM?
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:40 PM ^
that damaged the sanity of the Bucs' GM.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:20 PM ^
after the Ohio scandel do you really think any program will get "hammered"?? I didn't think so.
January 22nd, 2012 at 11:28 PM ^
I am not the grammar police...but this is egregious.
scandel

Dibs on the first Pharaoh Brown and Jake Fisher posts.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:22 PM ^
Better act quick. Seriously, though, I would love to have Pharaoh back in this class. Great player at a position of need to bring us to (likely) 28. Not sure we would take him and Grant, though.
January 23rd, 2012 at 12:25 AM ^
I don't want Pharaoh back. He turned his back on Michigan. We don't need those types of players here.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:33 PM ^
Dior Mathis
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:38 PM ^
Don't forget about Dwayne Stanford
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:21 PM ^
That was my exact thought. I dont know how you could run that type of offense against an NFL defense that has exceptional speed at every position.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:22 PM ^
If Kelly utlimately winds up in the NFL, I expect (a) Oregon to be smacked with major sanctions, and (b) for him to fail pretty badly in the NFL. His system makes sense in college because most teams are poor at tackling in space and have a hard time preparing for that offense. But in the pros, teams can tackle guys in space at a much higher clip and you are not going to survive with a 1 or 2-read passing scheme.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:26 PM ^
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:43 PM ^
Not all spreads are alike. Different system.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:46 PM ^
the Broncos didn't have a system, they had a couple plays.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:36 PM ^
They also had Tim Tebow, their savior.
January 22nd, 2012 at 11:48 PM ^
He QB'd a team into the play-offs and won a play-off game, not bad.

Smart Football is not as smart as he thinks he is.
January 23rd, 2012 at 1:19 PM ^
yeah cuz if ever there was an egomaniac in sports writing, it's Chris Brown.
lord.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:45 PM ^
tackling well in space at a higher clip. I've seen tons of missed tackles in NFL. You have to realize that the NFL offensive players are better athletes than college players so it's a wash.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:14 PM ^
I wouldn't say it's a wash. There are a lot more high-scoring games in college than in the pros, which suggests a greater imbalance between offense and defense at that level.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:57 PM ^
While it doesn't explain it all, and I agree there is an imbalance in the improvement, you have to take into account the time rules and how they affect the scores. The clock doesn't stop for first downs in the NFL which runs a lot of extra clock off, especially on long plays. There is also a lot more hurry up in college that adds to the scoring.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:51 PM ^
His system makes sense because his numbers work. QB running threat means either play down one in the box or one on one on the outside. After that he makes everything looks the same which makes it hard for a defense to read. Any NFL offense needs talent to make it go. His isn't asking anything new outside of the QB...and all of a sudden there's a glut of athletic former/current QBs thanks to guys like Chip Kelly.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:10 PM ^
The QB isn't nearly the running threat in Kelly's offense that people make it out to be. Darron Thomas carried the ball 56 times for 206 yards last season. It's basically a passing spread.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:43 PM ^
5th in rushing yards per game.
68th in passing yards per game.
The touchdown numbers are closer (42 rushing, 39 passing) but that's not a passing spread dawg.
January 22nd, 2012 at 9:54 PM ^
A "passing spread" team doesn't necessarily throw more than it rushes. It just means that the QB is primarily a thrower. People have been talking about Kelly's offense like it's just like RR's, when the role of the QB is dramatically different.
January 23rd, 2012 at 1:16 PM ^
It's not a passing spread in any sense that I usually see that term used. KIiff Kingsbury didn't threaten the DE w/ his legs in order to get numbers at the point of attack.
January 22nd, 2012 at 11:52 PM ^
what are the chances that look for a running / throwing QB like DRob, in 2013 to run that kind of spread offense...???
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:22 PM ^
Could it be Pete Carroll v2.0?
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:25 PM ^
Time to make it a verb! Oh, wait. It already is.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:23 PM ^
Wow, I would love to see how a true spread would work in the NFL. Bad for college football though, his offense is a ton of fun to watch.
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:39 PM ^
would make a great OC, maybe not head coach, is Mike Leach. That is basically what the best offenses in the NFL have become, spreads like Mike Leach ran at Texas Tech. Picture Aaron Rodgers in a Mike Leach offense...
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:25 PM ^
I'll be curious to see who ends up in Eugene as the new Head Coach. Any ideas?
January 22nd, 2012 at 8:26 PM ^
WVU coach leaving to go there. Can't quite remember his name though.
