OSU letter to students for PSU game
I realize OSU is an easy fanbase to pick on but given the severity of the circumstances, does anybody think Michigan would have done something similar if they were hosting the Nittany Lions this weekend?
November 17th, 2011 at 4:22 PM ^
I don't think it's fair to rag on OSU for this. I think any school would do that in this situation to be perfectly honest. PSU students demonstarted how college-aged students can react to things without perspective by flipping a news van.
I'm also reminded of a similar precedent when OU sent out a notice to their students asking them forgoe a pre-game tradition (not to replace the last words of the National Anthem to "...home of the Sooners!") when Air Force visited.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:22 PM ^
That's a lame OU tradition I think.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
It's kinda strange, b/c not many people are singing the national anthem but then right as "brave" is supposed to be sung, everyone in the stadium yells SOONERS at the top of their lungs.
The video board showing the lyrics reads:
And the home of the ?brave?

I live right here in the heart of Sooner country, and I swear, they are almost as bad as tOSU fans. There is something about the state of OK that makes the people believe they are better than everyone else. Constant PSA's about OK pride and how the people are the most giving in the nation and how the country would be nowhere without them hard working Oklahomans.
Anyone in AA looking for a roommate? I'd love to be around civilized people again... (Only half joking here)
November 17th, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
Why on God's green earth would someone think they are better than everyone else due to being from Oklahoma?
November 17th, 2011 at 6:32 PM ^
I'm no psychologist, but is there any other possible explanation?
November 17th, 2011 at 9:30 PM ^
For 5 years I have been asking that same question. I mean, this is the same state that passed legislation which said the state is exempt from laws passed by the federal government that they don't agree with.
Texas isn't the only state stupid enough to try succeding from the Union.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Michigan possibly would have done that, but it's obvious that the Ohio fans needed to be told to be good little boys and girls.
Side note: If someone can explain to me why Ohio fans would be dressed as a Native American and cowboy, please do so.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:22 PM ^
That's a hell of a good question, I didn't even catch that.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
My guess is that it was Halloween weekend.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
some of their fans think its halloween every weekend.
I saw painted face at the Purdue/OSU game last weekend.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:30 PM ^
Eh, facepaint is done almost at every football game.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:52 PM ^
I can't imagine there isn't a bigger jackass on the face of this planet than this guy:

....of "Star Trek: The Next Generation". A Benzite or Antiedian....one of those.

Face painter, gotta support the team...

Their Sonny and Cher outfits were at the dry cleaners.

This is funny, " we kindly ask that those of you who plan to attend this weekend's game host our guests with the respect deserved by a fellow Big Ten school". Is Michigan included on this list?
November 17th, 2011 at 4:47 PM ^
The scar above my eye, created when I walked into an errand beer bottle in Columbus in 2002 after the Michigan / OSU game, begs to say "NO" to the referenced question.
November 17th, 2011 at 5:04 PM ^
Didn't think so. How dare you walk into that innocent beer bottle? What did it ever do to you?The nerve of some people.
Sorry about your scar.
November 17th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
Beer bottle, just out to run an errand, and this douche walks right into it. Probably didn't even apologize...
November 17th, 2011 at 4:24 PM ^
It's just a fact of life in Columbus that you have to do something like that. I don't even say that as a shot against OSU.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
Yeah, otherwise they might be pooping in coolers or something.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:29 PM ^
OSU has to work with the hand that it's been dealt, and that hand involves being in Columbus.
November 17th, 2011 at 7:42 PM ^
A stained, Skoal-covered hand?
November 17th, 2011 at 4:29 PM ^

...we kindly ask that those of you who plan to attend this weekend's game host our guests with the respect deserved by a fellow Big Ten school. It is important to treat visiting fans as we would hope that Ohio State fans would be treated on the road.

I guess there's a first time for everything.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:51 PM ^
Before you get high-handed, ask yourself if Ohio State would have had to ask students to show up on time/early if they were hosting the Cornhuskers at noon this weekend? My guess is NO, they wouldn't.
We've got our own fanbase problems that people can pick on too. Nobody's perfect.
November 17th, 2011 at 4:54 PM ^
But wasn't the first to post about it.
November 17th, 2011 at 5:11 PM ^
Right, because our fans not showing up on time is totally equivalent to asking Ohio fans not to joke about child abuse and start fights. Right.
November 17th, 2011 at 6:13 PM ^
Right. I said it was equivalent. Right.
My point is that it's easy to take potshots at fanbases when things like this are done. If a lot of us were rival fans, we WOULD mock Michigan for that "please don't be late for this big game" message. Hell, we'd probably view a message from Brandon about not mocking PSU as a sign of class.
November 17th, 2011 at 5:55 PM ^
Eh I hate OSU as much as the next guy, but I think it's a good move on their part. Someone had to say it, and this guy took the initiative. Sure I think theyll still be a lot of misplaced anger at PSU fans but this really puts it into perspective
November 17th, 2011 at 5:57 PM ^
I'm pretty sure that a couple years ago, the students got an email along these lines about behavior when Penn State came to town. It's the first thing I thought of when I saw this letter yesterday on Twitter. I personally didn't think we needed it. OSU fans need it. They need people to enforce it too.
November 17th, 2011 at 6:16 PM ^
His name is Nick Messenger, and at quick glance I thought it was my name, Nick Messer. Thoughts ran through my head of what I could change my name to in order to avoid having the same name as someone at OSU.

profitgoblue hates you for sharing personal details about an MGoUser. Even if it's yourself.
November 17th, 2011 at 7:05 PM ^
One of my Husker friends posted about this yesterday and was astounded OSU found it necessary.

I told her wait until next year, she'll get a taste of how OSU fans treat visitors.
November 17th, 2011 at 7:37 PM ^
I'm astounded that tUoOS actually had the stones to look within and publicly acknowledge they have a problem.
Don't forget this is an administration and a town (CPD specifically) that said it's Michigan's fault if anything happens when we go down there to see a game.
November 17th, 2011 at 7:27 PM ^
start trouble for the most part. It's the Wal-mart Buckeyes who went to Akron or Toledo or Syracuse or some other crap school who are the biggest jackasses.
November 17th, 2011 at 8:30 PM ^
Same ones that give us the bad names too I suppose. Central, Western, Community Colleges, every school's got em i guess
November 18th, 2011 at 4:00 PM ^
Wow.. I guess it's us Walmart Wolverines, who invite away fans to tailgates, refrain from obscene chants in the stadium, don't puke in the street..

Yep we are the embarrassment..
November 17th, 2011 at 7:44 PM ^
But it's also too much to ask. It won't do any good.
Plus Penn State is likely better football team in this game and probably will win, so there's that to think about.
Couch in flames and overturned TV station vans? Yes, right next to the coolers.
November 17th, 2011 at 7:47 PM ^
tOSU admin can say they have the best fans in all of college football but the are fll of chit.
They have the worst fans. If you are from the visiting team especially Mich they will taunt you the whole time you are in colonumbus. They will attack you on the way to the game or in the parking lot. And if you happen to be in the wrong seating area the drunks from the upper deck will pee on you. I don't see that happening anywhere else. A couple of years ago their president had to intervene on the behalf of one of Michigans players mother where fans were harrassing her in the parking lot.
November 17th, 2011 at 8:12 PM ^
This will most likely end up counter-productive. If you tell a bunch of drunk college students not to do something they surely will do it.
November 17th, 2011 at 8:13 PM ^

first time I will be at "The Game". How is the atmosphere with all the suckeyes around? I have heard some pretty crazy stories.I have been to plenty of games (due to military duties, I was never around during this time of the year), and all seemed to be reasonably calm.

Don't go down to Columbus without your gun.

Bradley was Sandusky's aid de camp prior to his "retirement" and stepped into lead the defense when he left. Bradley had to know something of the rumors and see Sandusky on school property with the kids.
I'd have no issue with any Michigan fan giving the PSU coaching staff shit in the stadium. Signs, catcalls, etc. I'm rather unhappy with how our fellow conference member has handled reportsof child rape and defnitely think they should take some flak for it. Definitely leave the PSU fans and players alone though. Unless they start flipping news vans again.
