Video: First Practice in Pads
Here's a fairly short video of the first practice in pads today. Boyz n da Pahokee, you know what to do...

Gotta love hear those pads a crackin'! Love that drill

I was having trouble streaming this video from mgoblue. Then I tried downloading it, did not work. But here on mgoboards no problems. So thanks for the embed.

Roh looks MASSIVE now.

It looks like Hoke replaced some turf with grass on the practice field. Is this the case?
August 13th, 2011 at 1:21 AM ^
I think the outdoor practice fields have always been grass. I think it's just the stadium and indoor facility that have Fieldturf.
August 13th, 2011 at 10:31 AM ^
The field that runs parallel with the indoor facility is field turf and the one adjacent to that is a grass field.

WOW, some REALLY good plays.
Tony Anderson is going to play this year. Period, the kid can play. That was perfect the way he sheded his defender and made the tackle.
Taylor Lewan looks bigger and healthier. He pushed RVB back, had a nice block on Campbell and was seen re-establishing the LOS a couple times.
It's one throw, but that toss from Denard to Gallon was a STRIKE.
Good stuff!
August 13th, 2011 at 10:09 PM ^
From the video Denard looked good throwing the football an I noticed Kovacs poppin some pads. Kovacs is one of my favorites just because hes like an underdog being a former walk-on. Love his toughness.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:52 PM ^
THanks!
August 12th, 2011 at 10:54 PM ^
It looks like he had a couple of nice throws in that video. Can't wait to see him in action again.
August 12th, 2011 at 10:54 PM ^
-Denard looks accurate
-Shaw looks fast
-Lewan is an absolute beast
-Molk man handled Martin from what I could tell. What a matchup that must have been
August 12th, 2011 at 11:38 PM ^
Lewan seemed to really push RVB backwards and Molk did do well with Martin.
Should be a good sign for our "undersized" line.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:36 AM ^
That Molk/Martin match up is indeed interesting in the video. Molk came off the ball very well and managed to push Martin back about 2 or 3 yards. Then Martin got his arms extended and stopped the push. Martin even rolled into the gap the runner was headed for and forced him to stop and change direction. That's a heavy weight battle right there. I see good things on both sides. Of course, I'm not biased at all.......

...and my reaction to a nice offensive play is:
"Awesome, look at that offense go! This team is going to be awesome! But, wait. The defense isn't making any improvement! We're doomed."
And my reaction to a nice defensive play is:
"Awesome, look at that defense react to the ball and tackle! This team is going to be awesome! But wait. The OL didn't get a push and Smith couldn't push the pile. We're doomed."
Then I realize it's practice.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
Denard was throwing some tight spirals... very nice.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
I think I broke into tears at 1:16 when I saw that open field tackle...
August 12th, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
Stay tough Blue
August 12th, 2011 at 11:08 PM ^
I find it interesting that the coaches say they are rotating the backs between team in practice, yet almost every hand-off from Denard goes to Smith or Shaw.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:12 PM ^
Yep, you can tell everything about practice based on a couple of 3 minute videos....
August 12th, 2011 at 11:20 PM ^
Sorry, I meant every hand off in the videos, not every hand off in practice. Just an observation from the videos and I realize they are a few minutes from hours of practice.
August 13th, 2011 at 2:32 AM ^
Your comment is erroneous
August 12th, 2011 at 11:36 PM ^
I watched the video from last year on first day of pads and then went and watched this film. Much more intense and physical. Granted it's a 1 minute some clip but it was pretty interesting.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:50 PM ^
Interesting, do you have a link to the video from last year? I'd like to compare myself
August 13th, 2011 at 12:06 AM ^
I dunno, looks mostly the same to me, but what do I know...
August 13th, 2011 at 12:19 AM ^
When you're preaching the fundamentals, which is what Mattison is doing right now, and GERG was trying to do his two years in AA, it's gonig to look the same. Now it's down to the coaches to find and correct the mistakes the kids are making, something I'm not so sure GERG did a good job at.

Also (hopefully) teaching a scheme that makes sense and puts players in position to make tackles.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:29 AM ^
I have to say that last years practice looked more physical than this years. However, these clips do not show everything so it may in fact be the opposite.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:38 PM ^
Nice reception from Ricardo at 0:55. Good to see him getting in the passing game.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:40 PM ^
Also, Shaw looks a ton bigger.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:51 PM ^
in the recent roster update... no?
August 12th, 2011 at 11:55 PM ^
Shaw gained 8lbs from 185 to 197.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:57 PM ^
August 13th, 2011 at 12:01 AM ^
That's 12lbs
August 13th, 2011 at 12:03 AM ^
187 to 195. My bad
August 12th, 2011 at 11:55 PM ^
Shaw put on 5 lbs in the offseason

I looked in almost all threads, sorry if already posted. Not worth a new thread, but just a little interesting tidbit on what ESPN thinks of us.
August 12th, 2011 at 11:47 PM ^
Adam Rittenberg, the espn B1G blogger, did not list us as a tease team but he did list MSU.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:07 AM ^
1 on 1 tackling drills & the return of the patented Michigan play-action TE drag pass.
Love it.
August 13th, 2011 at 12:09 AM ^
If Lewan and Molk are doing that to RVB and Hulk Martin, I can only imagine how badly they're going to maul the opponents every Saturday. Is it September 3rd yet?
August 13th, 2011 at 12:11 AM ^
totally dominated VB on that play, noticed that too
August 13th, 2011 at 12:10 AM ^
said Michigan was a team on the rise in content I am not privy to, but I'm inclined to agree with him
August 13th, 2011 at 12:17 AM ^
but the video is just too short to make much of it, so instead:
August 13th, 2011 at 1:35 AM ^
DROB will be unstoppable if he gets that timing route passing game down. Nice to see Shaw have that quickness for his size!
August 13th, 2011 at 10:01 AM ^
August 13th, 2011 at 11:11 AM ^
Mike Shaw will be the starting TB, time to be a leader. Only knack I had on him was in games last year, he wouldn't hit the right hole. I've been wanting Micheal Shaw to tear it up ever since the Ohio game when he shoved that tool. Lewan will smash anyone in his way. Denard looks more accurate, hitting players while they are in the routes. As oppose to hitting behind them, thus slowing the WR speed down to catch the ball.
August 13th, 2011 at 11:56 AM ^
as long as he can break an arm tackle and not get tripped up so easily. He always had tons of ability, but a falling players arm would hit one of his legs and he'd got flying 3 yards to the ground, get up, smack the football pissed...and jog back to the huddle. If he can run through those "tackles"...you're right. BEAST MODE.
August 13th, 2011 at 2:01 PM ^
even though Im sure it only shows the completions, but he looks good throwing that ball this year...not that he didnt last year but he has def. improved in that area of his game.
August 13th, 2011 at 6:20 PM ^
No doubt Lewan got the intial push, but the sustained block came from the handful of jersey Lewan had in his left hand and a pull down to throw RVB off balance.
