OT: Alabama player passes away
Aaron Douglas, who was a potential starter for the Tide this fall, was found dead this morning. Terrible to hear:

Saban will do anything to free up scholarships.
Just kidding, this really is tragic. Best wishes to his family.
Too soon.
Terrible news and ESPN's deservedly getting hammered for the way they presented the news in that link.
Jesus espn.
That one is a bit disturbing. Quite a bit actually.
to get shit canned for this one. Big time. Un-be-fucking-lievable.
First off, all thoughts, prayers, and condolences should go to the Douglas family. This is truly a tragic time for them.
Second off ... they're all over this at EDSBS and it looks like the person at ESPN who wrote it was a UM grad (http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2011/5/12/2167778/report-aaron-douglas-alabama-lineman-found-dead-in-jacksonville#comments). So be prepared for an onslaught of scUM-bashing on the internets. Tough to disagree that Mr. Lin deserves the e-beating that he's taking but unfortunately it probably won't stop at him.
Let's keep this in perspective though -- the story here is a young man losing his life far too soon (although the ESPN Insider story is becoming even bigger, unfortunately). Again, thoughts and prayers should go to the Douglas family and the Alabama family as a whole, which has had to deal with far too much tragedy in the past few weeks.
Oh goodness, they point out that the actual story gets even worse.
Lin begins the article by speaking of Saban's "prescience" in giving Douglas's backups snaps at LT during spring practice.
You've got to be kidding me, ESPN...
Screencapped per BISB above: http://twitpic.com/4wqa6v
Like no joke my stomach just churned after seeing that! That is absolutely the worst thing ESPN could have said. If I was the parents or family members of that young man I would be storming the doors at ESPN to find answers as to why someone would EVER THINK about putting that up. Way to go ESPN, sick @$$holes
That made me really upset.
Sports television would be nothing without ESPN! I may have issues with the ways and means in which they inform, but I respect what they have done for sports. I do not support this, and I'm sure it was not checked by any editor.
The worst part is "subscribe to Insider for as low as $2.50/month to access the complete rumor".
Unless someone hacked their website, whoever put that up or signed off on it should be fired.
Even by SEC and ESPN standards that is among the most offensive things I have seen.
First off, condolecences to Aaron Douglas's family. What a tasteless article to be written, and what makes it worse is the fact that the author is a UofM grad (http://www.linkedin.com/pub/albert-lin/10/55b/769).
If he was anything close to a real man, he would make a public apology himself, instead of some random ESPN representative.
Tragic. My thoughts and prayers are with the Alabama program and his family.
My Dad is a Alabama graduate, so I have always had a big affinity towards the Tide. So with that in mind, in his memory, I'll say the following one time, and one time only.
ROLL TIDE ROLL!

ROLL TIDE ROLL!
So much for saying it only once.
I will never live down this triple posting. :(
I would be more worried about using a "sad face" .
I'd say Garrison Keillor was wrong, you do have to look far to see the camp fires of gentle people.
Good rebound.
In my defense, the Alabama student section does say "Roll Tide" 3 times, during the "Yellow Hamma" rendition.
They probably don't prelude it with "I'm going to say the following one time, and one time only."
Frankly, I thought it was a spot of genious.
We joke about us having bad luck lately but what the entire state of Alabama has gone through in the last month is something that nobody should ever have to go through. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, the program and the entire state of Alabama.
but being from Canada and having quadruplet 2.5 year olds I don't get a lot of time to check international news....what has ben gong on in Alabama the past month?
but can't tell if serious
sorry to hear that, and sorry for my spelling in the previous post....Sometimes my fingers work faster than my brain...
That's what she said!
Sorry, could not resist.
i am guessing that what some people call tornado damage, your four 2.5 year olds call playtime

One of the worst tornado outbreaks in history.
It's nice to see that you have to time to check mgoblog.
Damn.
how many seconds passed after he heard the news before Nick Saban started thinking about how this will affect his scholarship numbers.
RIP big fella.
it's too soon for shit like that dude.
as a comment to poke fun at the situation in any manner, but I appreciate your concern.
Well then what was the intent?
Was to point out that college football recruiting is so scuzzy now (with nick saban being a notable 'bad guy') that I would not be surprised if scholarship implications crossed his mind shortly after he heard the news.

I understand that some people enjoy playing the role of moral police. Anything else I can do for you, officer?
I am not really sure ihe was making a real joke about it but in that he may be making a true statement here. Saban is a snake and oversigns and gets as many recruits as he can anyway he can. So yes, it is morbidly humorous, but it is still upsetting to think he very well could have thought about it.
With that said, my heart goes out to this young man's family, friends, and the program at Alabama. Also, to the state of Alabama.
About over signing in the SEC, the sickening thing about it, is that Saban probably did think of scholarship numbers shortly after heard the tragic news.
ESPN took down the message.
Disgusting that it was even up in the first place!
Not hard to see why.
First RIP to the kid and condolences to the poor family. I can think of very few things that would be more devestating than to lose a child.
Second, I haven't seen something that bad in the media in a while. The person who wrote that, UM grad or not, doesn't just deserve to lose his job. He needs to be blackballed throughout the industry. That's a character flaw problem. The man's around 30 for christ's sake. You have to know better.
