Your Best Memories of Ohio State Games?

Submitted by Davy Found on December 11th, 2020 at 2:16 AM

With no game this weekend, I've been reflecting on memories of "The Game" in years past. Below are my favorite memories — how about yours?

1997: My brother and I were among the first fans charging the field when the clock showed zeros. A cop made a half-hearted attempt to grab us before realizing there were hundreds, if not thousands more coming right behind us. We dashed to midfield, where right in front of us Brian Griese and Charles Woodson, roses gripped in their mouths, gave each other a wild bear hug, screaming in jubilation. A moment later, they broke apart, and Griese whirled around, still biting a thorny rose stem, looking for his next hug. He seized my brother, lifted him in his arms, screaming a triumphant "Yaaa-arrrrghhhhh!!" in his left ear, before releasing him and rushing off to bear hug other teammates and fans. The look on my brother's face — delirious joy and surprise — was unforgettable.

2011: The night before The Game, after bars closed, I burned an Ohio State jersey in the alley next to Alley Bar (my avatar photo). Was too drunk to realize it at the time, but the next day at The Game, my dad kept asking me: What's that burning smell? Somehow I'd singed my eyebrows, my nose hairs, and my coat's faux fur collar. My dad's been going to games since he landed in A2 in 1968, but this was the Denard Robinson 40-34 win, and will always be a special one to me — our last win over OSU for my dad and I to see together in person. Hoping that by the time my son Desmond is old enough to go with me to games, the power imbalance will have swung back the other way.

Hope to hear some of your stories.

Got three memories:

Probably my favorite is the 2011 game in which Denard Robinson's whale of a game ended our seven year drought. I started watching Michigan football at the age of nine with my first game being the narrow UM loss in 2006 so to finally watch a Michigan win in the rivalry was huge for me. The suffering under Rich Rod and the narrow losses under Carr were distant memories with that win.

I remember the 2006 game because even though we lost, it was the first time I really was into watching Michigan football. It's the game that really started my interest in Michigan football.

Again even though we lost in 2013, I felt darn proud of Michigan in that game because they had fight in them. Devin Gardner, for all his struggles later in his career, doesn't get the type of credit he deserves for the effort he showed in that game. He was hobbled on a bad leg or ankle and still toughed things out, leading the team the entire game. I wish the team still had the same fight that 2013 team had. It's one of the few games I've seen in the modern era where Michigan actually played above their ability.

I will give you my two most vivid memories: 1968, Ohio State is throttling Michigan.  Woody goes for 2 at the end of the game.  I was watching (not a Michigan fan yet) and utterly dumbfounded.  “WTF sort of asshole is this guy?  This will come back to bite him someday.”

Next, 1969: after the fifth interception of his two quarterbacks and the clock running out on “the greatest college team ever assembled” I sat there thinking “see, you stupid asshole.  Act like a dick and it comes back to bite you. Jerk.”

Woody had his virtues, I assume from what Bo and others have said.  But the man was classless (see forearm to Clemson player who intercepted) and I lay much of the insanity-level obsession on the Game at OSU in particular at his feet.

Had to be '95-'97.  Pick Biakabutuka, the upset, or Woodson sealing the undefeated season as well the heisman.  What a good decade for Michigan. Hockey, Football, and Basketball were all fun to watch.

1. The Biakabutuka game was my first at The Big House.

2. A close friend recently passed. Her husband was on the 2015 staff. She gave me on field passes for The Game. It was awesome to be able to walk through the tunnel and around the field to head up to our seats. I'll never forget that. Or my good friend...

My first Michigan v. Ohio State game was November 20, 1971, my freshman year.

M won 10-7.  Billy Taylor ran it in from the 21 around right end into the south endzone for the score.  Thom Darden went over an OSU receiver for an interception, with Woody going crazy demanding an interference call, ripping up the down marker in the process.  You can watch the video on YouTube.

Freezing cold and sleeting throughout the second half.  My parents came to the game and they were going to take me dinner.  We met up after the game and my dad said they were going home and handed me a $20 for a good dinner.  I sat in the shower under the hot water at Bursley for an hour trying to warm up.

I was in Columbus for the 2000 game.  Henson shredded them through the air and then scored on the 4th and goal from the 2 on a bootleg to put the game away.  It was a glorious feeling and I remember turning to my dad and screaming "WE WIN!" and I gave him a big hug.  Last time we won in that place I believe

1980: 9-3 in Columbus, AC scores the only TD of the game

1985: Harbaugh to Kolesar

1988: Demetrius Brown, also to Kolesar, with 1:37 left (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmAicgPycMg) to win 34-31 in Columbus

1991: kicked their sorry ass, Hellooooooo Heisman!

1993: ruined their national title hopes, kicked their sorry ass 28-0

1995: Timmy B

1996: I thought we were going to get destroyed, and we were in the first half, but they kept kicking FGs to let us hang around. Then Shawn Springs slips and a simple Griese to Streets slant goes 68 yards for a TD and OSU pees down their leg. 14-9 in Columbus

1997: duh

2003: Really was an ass kicking, game not as close as the final score of 35-21

I regret this now, but I really took the 2011 win for granted. I thought Michigan had turned the tide and was gonna start being osu regularly again.

Needless to say, almost every Game I have vivid memories of, are losses. I do remember Devin Gardner's performance fondly, besides obviously wishing The Game would've went the other way.

Back when I was 13, we went down to Columbus to play OSU and whipped them 22-0. OSU were not slouches that year they were ranked number 8 and we were ranked number 4. OSU beat us at home the year before. All of OSU was pissed. My uncle went down to the game and got a speeding ticket for going 3 mph over the speed limit on I-75 on his way north.

That was the year when all else was ingested we invented Kahlua and Tomato Juice (shaken not stirred) at 5:37 AM on SUNDAY as the party was just starting to reach it's peak...

Many of the players came through hour after hour after hour after hour...............nobody seemed to leave and were dialing more people to come over on their hand held rotary phones.....

Everyone who was there will ever remember or not remember that experience.

The Campus was fun and electric and kids of all ages trusted the process.

School did not pay $4M per win--and the end goal was to End The War not live like lepers and with politically correct terrorists......

What time is the Mud Bowl tomorrow??????

I guess I would have to say 2003. I know it was the 100th matchup and Chris Perry was awesome, but I more just remember that Michigan won, not the game itself.

2011 wasn't a very satisfying win for me. I had to listen to most of it on the radio and OSU wasn't that great that year. It was like "okay, cool, can this happen more often now?"

I only remember the 2003/2011 wins. 2011 was a great win - even if OSU was a shell of themselves for that year.

I somewhat remember 2003. Only because we had a flat on the way to the place we were watching the game. We arrived at the start of the 4th quarter.

Every other game I remember had been a loss. More recent, every game has been an awful, horrible, painful loss.

Not even close. The 1988 game in Columbus. We were up 20-0 at the half. Ohio State made a big comeback and took the lead 31-27, with about 50 seconds left in the game. John Kolesar took the ensuing kick back to about the OSU 40 yard line. Then Demetrius Brown threw a bomb to Kolesar in the end zone. It was a bit under thrown, but Kolesar came back and caught it, for the win, I was a guest of a business supplier, based in Columbus. The hotel, bus shuttle, and game tickets were all included. The best part of the whole trip was the bus ride back to the hotel, The bus was full of sad and stunned Buckeye fans. Being the only Michigan fans, would normally be a risky proposition. But they had to be nice to us, because I was the customer. I had backed my car into some shrubs, in the hotel parking lot, so my Michigan license plate was not visible. I also bought a cheap Ohio State cap in Toledo and put it on the dash panel, by the windshield, for good measure. Those were the days, God I miss John Cooper.

Try having my glorious childhood.  Between the ages of 5 and 20, just 3 total losses to Ohio State.  My first ever memory of an OSU game was as a kindergartner when Harbaugh threw the 70 yard bomb.

So I'd have to say almost my entire childhood into college was my favorite OSU memory.

I remember what it was like to be excited for this game.

I remember what it was like to be confident about this game, especially when a Buckeye player would shoot his overconfident mouth off to the media.

I remember endlessly ripping on OSU when they made t-shirts of the final score celebrating their first victory over Michigan in 7 years.  I told a guy at Cedar Point how lame his shirt was and that if Michigan made an official shirt every time they beat the Buckeyes, my closet wouldn't be big enough to hold them.

Compare that to now where there is just zero confidence at any time during the calendar year.  It's one thing for the younger fans, who I feel horrible for.  But it's another thing when you're in my shoes and you enjoyed continued success over OSU for such a long time to...nothing.

Now I'm going to cry.  I need a drink.

1991, 31-3. In my sophomore year, my roommate's dad, who was a Buckeye alum, brought him and some of his buddies to our house on Cambridge Court and bought us beer. Some of the worse fucking beer I've ever imbibed: Cincy Cream Ale and Rhinelander.

Looking back, I think they were punking us as we guzzled the swill (not saying no to free brews and our party ball was tapped - dating myself even more) and all wound up with sour stomachs for the rest of the weekend.

The game itself was a classic in all the ways that I remember meaningful November football - it was a late Thanksgiving so the game was right before break and winter exams: Party time. Also, it was so gray, but not ridiculously cold like it should be for Big Ten Country! The rout was on from the get and we never worried about the outcome. Our boda bags were full of 7&7 (refilled with Stadium Sprites and asspockets of Seagrams 7 secured at Stadium Liquor on the way down) and my buddy's dad and his retinue were a bunch of angry old men who were only getting the last laugh regarding our bowels. Never in danger of losing and rubbing it in was our only revenge.

Added bonus for the euphoria was sweeping ND/MSU/OSU despite it being a typical Michigan year of my college days: 10-2 with a Rose Bowl loss. Then on to some serious underage drinking and burgers at Charlies...a lifetime ago, figuratively, and literally.

I've been to quite a few OSU games, but I'll pick these two:

Sophomore year ('77), we won 14-6.  Michigan gave a tremendous defensive effort.  A bend-but-don't-break defense that stiffened whenever OSU got near the scoring zone.  They created some timely turnovers, too.  One inside M's 10 yard line in the 4th quarter.  We had a great view of Woody punching the ABC camera man.

1985 Harbaugh to Kolesar to ice the game.  Our seats were down low giving us a great view of Harbaugh throwing the pass.  I didn't have to see anything when Kolesar caught it.  The crowd roared.

I feel sorry for fans who were only 8-10 years old in 2008. They're 20-22 years old and have no good Michigan vs OSU memories. May be 2011 for them?

During the Cooper years, my best friend was an OSU alum, so I got to see a buckeye suffer through their worst times.

The loser would have to make a drink we called a "Cooper Sidecarr", which consisted of whatever dregs were in the liquor cabinet and colored with blue curacao or red grenadine depending upon the loser's color.
