From Grosse Pointe South?  A cake eater?

Grosse Pointe last won the state high school football championship in 1954.

Last D1 player from GP South was Reid Fragel in 2009 who went to OSU on the promise he could play tight end.  Enter Urban Meyer and he was moved to OT.

01/31/2019 - 4:39pm As my mother used to say, …

As my mother used to say, "Don't use that word - it's common."

Clearly language mores change over time but I still find it vulgar.  I related this story in another thread, but I was at the 1997 M v. Wisconsin game in Madison and some W buffoon yelled "Fuck Woodson" incessantly during the game.  By the 50th time it was just stupid.

01/22/2019 - 2:19pm I was there in 1997.  I…

I was there in 1997.  I thought their fans were crazy, but only during the game.  The same guy that was maniacally yelling "Fuck Woodson" all throughout the game reverted to a normal human being once the gun sounded ending the game.

We were sitting on the side that incorporates the old stadium and I though that getting out of there in an emergency would be a problem.

Rudy T - no one would mess with us if he was on the floor.  He was one tough SOB.

He could shoot too.

01/03/2019 - 10:35am 1. Sneaking into a late…

1. Sneaking into a late 1970s Ohio State game by going through a hole in the fence over by the house that used to stand inside the fence on Main Street;

2.  Watching Paul Seal walk across the diag in the dead of winter in his ankle-length black maxi coat - one mean-looking dude;

3.  Watching Glen Chapman drive around Ann Arbor in his black car that had "Blackbird" written on the side in red paint - another mean-looking dude;

4.  More of a Crisler Arena story than a sports anecdote, but while attending the John Sinclair Freedom Rally in 1971 my roommate noticed that the ticket collector was not ripping the tickets in half.  He was clearly high out of his mind.  When asked, he gave us his entire stack of tickets which we took outside and sold for $20 (twice the stated price) and made about $300 each.  Most profitable concert I ever attended.  Downside was having to listen to Yoko Ono "sing"; and

5.  Robbie Moore in the basement of the V-Bell throwing glasses against the wall while yelling "I'm a fucking All American" at the top of his lungs.

Cancer is EVIL!  I have lost two dear friends that were declared clean and then re-attacked.

As I near 65, closer to the end than the beginning, the one item on my bucket list is a cure for cancer.  Everything else pales in comparison.

God's love to these two and all so afflicted.

11/08/2018 - 11:25am Revel and Roll on South…

Revel and Roll on South Industrial just south of Stadium has multiple televisions and really good food.  Much better than you would expect from a bowling alley.

I called the BTN on your behalf to see if they would change the start time to accommodate your schedule.  They said they would look into it.

10/31/2018 - 3:06pm I remember when Penn State…

I remember when Penn State came into the Big 10 and the talk was how they would win the championship every year (same thing with Nebraska, BTW).  They are a substandard school, with a substandard football team, stuck in the middle of nowhere.

I don't care what the score is as long as we win.  I just want us to give them the thorough whipping they deserve.

10/09/2018 - 9:25am I'll be in Seattle that…

I'll be in Seattle that Saturday so I'll be able to watch the game at 9:00 a.m.  I've never done that, Breakfast with the Wolverines.

Try to get a slot to go to the top of one of the Mackinac Bridge towers.  My sister won one in a silent auction and she and her husband got to go up.  Absolutely awesome!

08/01/2018 - 1:27pm My favorite - my freshman…

My favorite - my freshman year and the weather was awful.  It was sleeting during the game.  My parents came to go to the game and take me out to dinner.  They were so cold after the game my dad gave me $20 for dinner and told me "We're out of here."  I went back to Bursley and sat in the shower for about an hour.

06/22/2018 - 1:21pm Engler was hired by MSU to…

Engler was hired by MSU to be their torpedo and point man on this mess and that's exactly what he's doing.  Opening his big mouth doesn't help him any, but he is the lightning rod for everything related to Nassar, et. al.  Why would you think they would get rid of him?  He's the one taking most of the heat.

After today's meeting what are people talking about?  Engler, not their approval of the settlement.

06/01/2018 - 3:54pm From 1971-1974 Seasons

Tight end Paul Seal - when he walked through the Diag in the winter in his ankle length maxi-coat, the crowds parted like the Red Sea.  IMHO he was one bad mutha...

QB Dennis Franklin - ran the option with aplomb.  Good guy too - he was in an accounting class that I took.

RB/Wing Gil Chapman - another bad mutha... He drove a black car with "Black Bird" painted on the side.  One tough runner.

05/17/2018 - 12:06pm Navy–Marine Corps Memorial Stadium @ US Naval Academy

35,000 seats, usually full.  Good football team with a great coach.  Great Naval Academy and Annapolis atmosphere.

05/08/2018 - 4:31pm Problem with high school sports is...

the parent that thinks their child is going D1.

In my experience, mostly girls soccer and football, you can spot D1 talent a mile away.

At my kid's high school, the parents that constantly yell at the refs are frequently banished to a far-off corner of the field.  The "normal" parents support that.  Please ref - the kids need you.  Screw the parents.

05/08/2018 - 3:06pm Two actually...

Orange BMW 2002 tii

White Lotus Europa.  Actually was able to use one for the summer and it was great fun to drive.  I would constantly get pulled over by cops that just wanted to look at it.  Having your date get out of it in a formal dress would drive the car parkers crazy.  I would park it at the local bar under a semi trailer if there wasn't an available parking space.  Never could get the damn thing into reverse.

04/26/2018 - 10:54am I think the draft is an absolute crap shoot.

To paraphrase Bo, three things can happen with a draft pick and two of them are bad:

1.  They perform to or exceed expectations; (Good)

2.  They do not perform to expectations; or (Bad)

3.  They have injury or character issues. (Bad)

Trade picks for "2-3 years in the NFL" players that have proven themselves, particularly to teams that are desperate.

04/19/2018 - 10:03am Off to Pizza Bob's

Mid-70s - Lived in a fraternity, but no meals on Saturday evening or all day on Sunday. Fraternity food wasn't very good to start with.

Standby dinner was Pizza Bob's for a pizza sub and a hot fudge shake.  Preferred downtown but would go to uptown if no other choice.   Who was that guy that owned the time record for eating a Destroyer sub?  His picture was on the wall forever, as was the SI (?) article about Secretariat.

Sunday dinner was usually Holly's Steak + 4 out on Washtenaw.

Sunday breakfast was at a greek restaurant on the corner of Packard and State. 4-6 guys reading one Sunday newspaper, recently purchased at Blue Front.  We would be there for 2 hours.  Found out years later that my now-wife waitressed at the same place.  I hope she never had our table, as we were lousy tippers.

04/18/2018 - 2:58pm If you have a Nexus Card...

for travel to Canada, it works to get you TSA pre-screening status on the airlines.  Use it all the time.

04/18/2018 - 9:41am My rule for flying Spirit

Flights of 2 hours or less.  I am 6'3" and yes I am shoehorned in, but when flying with (and paying for) more than 1 person, I am willing to put up with everything to save the money, but only for destinations that are 2 hours or less of flight time.

04/12/2018 - 11:55am Enter the UP from the west...

Not a big fan of the eastern UP and Mackinac Island - too many touristas.

My contrarian tour of the UP.

1.  Take one of the ferries across Lake Michigan.  Take one that arrives in Wisconsin late at night.  Get a stateroom on the ferry if you can.  The ride is fun for awhile but how much water can you look at, especially at night.

2. Spend the night in Wisconsin where you get off the ferry.  Head north in the morning to Piers Gorges back in Michigan, it's fabulous!  Watch the kayakers run the whitwater.

3. Head west to the Porkies.  Plan to spend two nights and explore both the eastern and western part of the park.  Take a hike to Lake in the Clouds.  Don't miss the Presque Ille River at the western end of the park.  Look for bears.

4. Head up into the Keewenaw Peninsula and stay at least 1 night in Copper Harbor.  Explore.  Look for bears.

5. Head to Munising and stay at least 1 night. Explore Pictured Rocks.

6. Head to Grand Marais.  DO NOT TAKE THE SHORE ROAD unless you have a big SUV.  Spend 1 night in Grand Marais.  Explore west to the Log Slide - fabulous dune about 300' high.  Go on down the dune, but remember you have to come back up.

There are waterfalls all over the UP which you can reach from just off the highway.  Stop at a few and take a look.  Get a copy of Hunt's Guide to the Upper Peninsula originally published in 1997.  Great book.

Ok,ok - check out Taquamenon Falls, but be prepared for a lot of tourists.

I actuall did this tour with my wife and 3 children.  Everyone loved it.

03/09/2018 - 3:19pm You can complain all you want about Yost...

but when I started school in fall of 1971, the men's varsity hockey team played at the Colliseum on Hill Street across the side street from Fingerle Lumber.

Now that was a dump.  Seats on only one side of the arena.

Best college hockey arena I have ever seen is Ingalls Rink at Yale designed by Eero Saarinen and nicknamed The Whale.  Roof is made of wood.

02/09/2018 - 1:19pm Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend 1974

Four hour drive from Grosse Pointe to Ann Arbor.  Three guys with only a 12 pack of beer for the ride.  Driver allowed no bathroom stops.

Very few people made it back to school.  Sunday dinner required a very snowy trek down to Pizza Bob's.  M closed Monday and cancelled classes (allegedly) for the 1st time in school history.

02/08/2018 - 12:23pm Watching Henrik Zetterberg...

Watching henrik Zetterberg playing for Team Sweden in the 2002 Olympics knowing that he would be a Red Wing when he played in the NHL.

He was so much fun to watch in the Olympics.

01/31/2018 - 2:50pm Bob Timberlake

It began with the 1964 football team and QB Bob Timberlake, which went on to win the 1965 Rose Bowl 34-7 over Tommy Prothro's Oregon State team.

The cement was the 1969 victory over the unbeaten (for almost 2 years) OSU team.  I just admired the guts of an underdog that rose up to beat the great Woody Hayes and his undefeated Buckeyes. Watched it alone in my room on a small B&W tv.

Selected Michigan over Amherst, ND and MSU (fallback school).  Never told my dad I was admitted to ND, as he would have made me attend.  Never saw Amherst until about 10 years ago.  Would have been a nice #2 school.

Always proud to be an M grad!

01/29/2018 - 12:40pm Pizza Bob's

Although I'm still pissed they took down the picture of the guy that held the time record for eating a Destroyer Sub.

01/17/2018 - 9:32am Bev Plocki

Bev Plocki has built an absolute gymnastics powerhouse at U of M.  Wins the Big Ten almost every year andu usally makes it to the NCAA Round of 16.  Her record is amazing!

01/05/2018 - 3:12pm Remember, the Lions hired Matt Millen...

off a tv gig and look at how well that worked out.

01/05/2018 - 3:07pm Not well liked...

by the CMU faithful.  They were very happy to see him go.  My son attended CMU during his tenure.

01/02/2018 - 2:38pm I'm not pissed at this year or last year or looking into

the future.  I'm mad because an 8-4 Michigan team lost to an 8-4 South Carolina team and surrendered a big lead in the process.

We came out in the 2nd half and marched down the field with a mix of pass and run to score our only touchdown of the game.  The next two times we abandon the pass and go back to a power run game with 3 OL starters missing.  Who plans these games and who calls the O plays?

The first half was totally BORING!  The second half we started out strong and then put the total offense away. Why?

12/20/2017 - 4:35pm I bought tickets...

to the Monet exhibit at the DIA.  Buy the VIP tickets that are good any day, any time.  They cost a bit more ($16) but they provide the flexibility you need for a gift.

11/27/2017 - 4:15pm USNA

As the father of a fairly recent USNA grad, I have to mention how much I enjoyed attending their home games at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.  Seats about 35K surrounded by a parking lot which was tailgate nirvana for the home fans.  There is a grassy area at one end of the stadium with very reasonably priced tickets.  Overall, just a great college football experience.

06/15/2017 - 9:27am George Plimpton

He and I were the only two people in the Admiral's Club in O'Hare Airport.

I said hi and he said hi back.  We ended up drinking beer and talking sports for over an hour while waiting for our flights.  Nice guy with great stories.  We talked a lot about Paper Lion.

05/11/2017 - 1:56pm 3 kids, not 1 went to M

Hooked on M athletics by the 1969 M v. OSU football game.

W and I graduated mid-70s from M.  W was a letter winner.

Oldest went MAC, Second went Ivy (but M for grad school), Youngest went to one of the military academies.

All 3 were big time M sports fans but rooted for their schools too.  Not much chance of any of their schools playing M in football.  All three still follow M sports fervently.

05/04/2017 - 3:45pm Horse Racing and Track

The Great Match Race: When North Met South in America's First Sports Spectacle

04/06/2017 - 11:54am Built for football game entertainment of big donors

There really was nothin wrong with the old clubhouse.  IMHO this was built to provide another venue to entertain big donors before and after the football games.

I play the course almost every weekend and I love it.  The greens are diabolical.

03/28/2017 - 10:37am 1969 Michigan-Ohio State game

I had been a fan since the early 60's with Bob Timberlake and the 1965 Rose Bowl game, but it was the 1969 Michigan-Ohio State game that sealed the deal.

Two years later I matriculated at U of M.  I got to see another victory in the 1971 version of The Game.

03/21/2017 - 12:21pm Played a lot of basketball there in the early 1970s

It got real interesting in the winter when the football players showed up.

Great showers in the basement - good water pressure and a lot of hot water.  Always showered there before heading back to the dorm.  I lived in Bursley freshman year and there was no Rec Building on north campus, so we had to go to Waterman.

On the other hand, the adjacent (and connected) Barbour Gymnasium was a dump.

Yes, I remember registering in Waterman.

03/21/2017 - 11:06am Landlord's like med students

They are much quieter and saner than undergrads and have quieter parties.

03/21/2017 - 9:38am My D is in her final year of residency

When in med school she lived in the area bounded by State to the west, Huron to the south, the river to the north and Fuller to the east (North Ward?).  That area is full of graduate students including a lot of med students and includes the med school fraternity.  It is an easy walk or bike ride to the med school.  I would give you more details from my D, but she is currently in Africa working at a clinic for a month.

Good hunting!

01/27/2017 - 9:06am Women's Gymnastics @ Crisler on Saturday, 4:00 p.m.

I want to see if Michigan's Nicole Artz can score another perfect 10 on floor exercise, as she did last weekend.

Opponent is No. 12 Nebraska.

01/26/2017 - 10:06am Nonensical is another defining term

The whole thing makes NO sense.  Other teams travel over springbreak, why is football the only sport that is legislated out?

12/29/2016 - 2:29pm He played out of position all year.

If he came back, he would be able to play safety, which I think is his natural position and where he would play in the NFL.

Whatever his decision, I'm ok with it.  However, I am also selfish where M football comes in.

11/19/2015 - 6:43pm The 1973

Ohio State game sent me into deep depression and a hatred af all things Sparty.

10/31/2015 - 11:00pm My apologies

for triple post. I am a dufus.

10/31/2015 - 10:08pm Why does Shane

even bother to dress for the game?

07/13/2015 - 11:27am America's Cup

Fill it with water and race sailboats.
