Wilton Speight won't play at Rivals Camp Series
Title pretty much says it all, but apparently WIlton will not be participating in the Rivals Camp Series. He was invited, but turned it down per Rivals message board - Tim Sullivan
I've never seen a kid invited to show his talents/compete and turn it down, but he has his reasons.
I am not sure if that means he won't be doing the All-Star games too or what.
Tim says it may be because he learned a little something about getting burned out (sick) from Shane.

He's already commited to go to the UA game, so he'll be doing that.
February 21st, 2013 at 12:55 PM ^
This is different I believe. The website says that it's put on by Under Armour, so I highly doubt it would conflict with the UA game.

I think he was just referring to the OPs question of if he will participate in All Star games, not saying that the all star game is why he is missing this.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:05 PM ^
Oops! You're right. My bad A2, I guess I didn't read that part of the OP.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:11 PM ^
Not a problem at all.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:03 PM ^
I think he is referring to the OP's statement saying that he wonders if he will be doing the all star games.

I have read elsewhere that he wants to do The Elite 11 and The Opening.

There's more incentive to go to the Elite 11 and NFTC camps to try and get an invite to The Opening. By going to the Rivals camps or any of the other ones, there's no incentive outside of just wearing yourself down like Shane.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:55 PM ^
There is some incentive to going to the Rivals camps because starting this year they are the official selection partner for the Under Armour AA game.
February 21st, 2013 at 2:02 PM ^
That's interesting. Considering he already has an invite, I wouldn't be surprised if that played a part in his decision.
February 21st, 2013 at 2:23 PM ^
I think he means the Army AA.

Rivals has gone all-in with Under Armour. UA sponsors their 100/250 rankings, as well as their camps. As a result of their three year deal, Rivals also becomes an offical selection partner for the Under Armour All-America game. As I mentioned above, ESPN (as a result of the game being on their air) still has a say in the roster selection for the UA game as well, but they no longer have sole control over it as they have in years past.

I forget what the split is, but ESPN still has some say in the roster for the UA game since it is on their air.

I think these high profile recruits say yes to everything and by the end they are glad to "end the process" due to visits, constant emails, texts, letters, phone calls, and camps all over the place. Yes, a lot of them like the attention but it probably gets overwhelming.
Hell, I like pizza but after 14 days straight eating pizza for dinner I am ready to move on to tacos.

since your Sophomore year. Are you saying you are not going to commit to our vision for you at Cottage Inn for the next 4 years? I thought you verbaled months ago . . .

February 21st, 2013 at 2:18 PM ^
HC doesn't personally recruit and is headed to the NFL soon. If there is no commit before you leave our campus, we probably won't have room.
February 21st, 2013 at 12:57 PM ^
No big deal. He is already comitted to play in the Under Armour game and he travels to California once a month to meet with a quarterback coach. He will also be doing a couple other camps throughout the summer.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:07 PM ^
to these events, do they not? I honestly do not know for sure, but I think these camps and such are on their own (parents') dime. I'm not surprised at all that he is picking a few he wants to do and keeping it at that.
Not saying that's the situation here, but it seems strange to me when people assume/expect kids to attend everything they are invited to. Those costs would add up. Quickly.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:14 PM ^
I don't believe kids have to pay an entry fee, but they do have to pay for travel, lodging, etc.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:22 PM ^
is most of the cost.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:27 PM ^
Yeah, depending on where it is. If you have to fly somewhere and stay at a hotel, then it's most of the cost. If you can drive 2 hours and stay with your aunt, it's probably not much. I think it just depends.
February 21st, 2013 at 1:42 PM ^
Depends on how much your aunt charges for room and board, and if your car is able to shift past second gear on the freeway. These are all questions we just don't have the answers to.

Those damn coddled Socal QBs rubbing off on Speights trips to see Clarkson...probably won't throw at the combine either.
February 21st, 2013 at 2:05 PM ^
I know you're joking, but I bet Barkley wishes he could throw at the combine, considering there are a lot of questions regarding him as a prospect.
That said, his arm isn't really his strength (a big reason for those questions) so maybe it is good he's not throwing, considering they'd want him to throw more than 15 yards and he can't do that very well. The combine scouts weren't going to ask him to throw a swing pass to Marquise Lee and watch him take it 70 yards to pay dirt.

You've been on this board for 4+ years and never heard of a kid turn down an invitation? It happens all the time. Top level recruits get invited to dozens of camps, and they turn down invites regularly. Shane was an exception; he went to more camps than most do.
February 21st, 2013 at 3:35 PM ^
sp8 is not looking for more offers. his senior season and UA game should allow enough evals for us star rating junkies. he trains with a qb coach in california, so he is not seeking extra coaching/skill development. actually, if he can travel for VA to CA for weekend tutorials, he probably doesn't need the scholarship and should just walk on.

OMG, I know this is totally OT, and a big time CSB (didn't think it was thread worthy however), but my sisters just came home from school and told me I might know who their substitute teacher is. Come find out, its THE ONE AND ONLY, Lloyd Brady. Needless to say, I cannot stop laughing and had to show them just how famous their new sub is.

I would post it. Quite creepy, but the whereabouts of Lloyd Brady are very post-worthy.
February 21st, 2013 at 3:43 PM ^
he's working with his QB coach all throughout the offseason, I couldn't care less. There are so many years between now and when he could see the field.

The more I read about Wilton, the more I am impressed with his work ethic and his drive. I believe that he will challenge Shane for the starting job in 2 years. This will be good, it will not be Henson forced in on Brady's playing time which upset the balance of the team..., but a true competition and it will be fun to watch.
