Wilton Speight won't play at Rivals Camp Series

Submitted by His Dudeness on

Title pretty much says it all, but apparently WIlton will not be participating in the Rivals Camp Series. He was invited, but turned it down per Rivals message board - Tim Sullivan

I've never seen a kid invited to show his talents/compete and turn it down, but he has his reasons.

I am not sure if that means he won't be doing the All-Star games too or what.

Tim says it may be because he learned a little something about getting burned out (sick) from Shane.

Rivals has gone all-in with Under Armour.  UA sponsors their 100/250 rankings, as well as their camps.  As a result of their three year deal, Rivals also becomes an offical selection partner for the Under Armour All-America game.  As I mentioned above, ESPN (as a result of the game being on their air) still has a say in the roster selection for the UA game as well, but they no longer have sole control over it as they have in years past.

I think these high profile recruits say yes to everything and by the end they are glad to "end the process" due to visits, constant emails, texts, letters, phone calls, and camps all over the place. Yes, a lot of them like the attention but it probably gets overwhelming.

Hell, I like pizza but after 14 days straight eating pizza for dinner I am ready to move on to tacos.

No big deal. He is already comitted to play in the Under Armour game and he travels to California once a month to meet with a quarterback coach. He will also be doing a couple other camps throughout the summer.

to these events, do they not?  I honestly do not know for sure, but I think these camps and such are on their own (parents') dime.   I'm not surprised at all that he is picking a few he wants to do and keeping it at that.

Not saying that's the situation here, but it seems strange to me when people assume/expect kids to attend everything they are invited to.   Those costs would add up.  Quickly.

Sorry to have to stereotype, but a ton of these kids aren't from the best areas. However, virtually every big name invite seems to show up. I know I wouldn't have been able to afford that many camp trips. How do they all get there if they have to pay there own way? I know the Army AA game at least pays airfare because I ended up on a flight to SA w/ a few of them.

It is regional so most prospects can drive there if they want.

I know you're joking, but I bet Barkley wishes he could throw at the combine, considering there are a lot of questions regarding him as a prospect.

That said, his arm isn't really his strength (a big reason for those questions) so maybe it is good he's not throwing, considering they'd want him to throw more than 15 yards and he can't do that very well.  The combine scouts weren't going to ask him to throw a swing pass to Marquise Lee and watch him take it 70 yards to pay dirt.

I've followed Barkley pretty closely being out here. He's a big, very smart, quite talented kid who was all of those things in high school and got tons of hype for being well beyond his years. When he got to college, USC didn't have an incumbent QB and Barkley was able to be good for an underclassman because of his intelligence and maturity. As an upperclassman, he had Lee and Woods at receiver which would make any QB look better than he is. The problem is, his talent never caught up with his hype, and he never became anything better than "good." He'll get drafted by someone, but he doesn't have an NFL arm and has Brady/Manning level athleticism. I don't expect him to ever be an NFL starter.

You've been on this board for 4+ years and never heard of a kid turn down an invitation?  It happens all the time.  Top level recruits get invited to dozens of camps, and they turn down invites regularly.  Shane was an exception; he went to more camps than most do.

sp8 is not looking for more offers.  his senior season and UA game should allow enough evals for us star rating junkies. he trains with a qb coach in california, so he is not seeking extra coaching/skill development. actually, if he can travel for VA to CA for weekend tutorials, he probably doesn't need the scholarship and should just walk on.

OMG, I know this is totally OT, and a big time CSB (didn't think it was thread worthy however), but my sisters just came home from school and told me I might know who their substitute teacher is. Come find out, its THE ONE AND ONLY, Lloyd Brady. Needless to say, I cannot stop laughing and had to show them just how famous their new sub is.

The more I read about Wilton, the more I am impressed with his work ethic and his drive.  I believe that he will challenge Shane for the starting job in 2 years.  This will be good, it will not be Henson forced in on Brady's playing time which upset the balance of the team..., but a true competition and it will be fun to watch.
