It seems kind of silly for people to be curious about how Saban recruits. Seems pretty straightforward to me. Every player he recruits has the raw material to be in the NFL and he can honestly tell them that he gives them the best chance of achieving their dreams of going pro.

I'd be more interested in how programs like Boise State evaluate talent than how the best programs attract recruits.

For those who can't or don’t want to watch:

  1. We win the most championships
  2. We are in the most playoffs
  3. We have the most players in the league and the most players getting drafted
  4. You’re good enough to play here, or I wouldn’t recruit you
  5. The coaches telling you can play sooner at their program are just admitting Bama is better
  6. The competition here with the best in the college game will make you better—ask our players
  7. So don’t listen to the noise about playing time

Pretty much exactly what you would think he’d say.

If your mindset is NFL or bust when you have the opportunity to receive a free education from some of the top schools in the country, you’re getting some bad advice. For every NFL player there is a Grant Newsome. Fortunately for Grant, he knew to prioritize school.

The local guy here who went to Alabama under Saban (and even received his degree) is a drug dealer.

Telling 17-18 year old elite recruits to think about it is unrealistic.

School is the furthest thing from most kids’ minds. But responsible adults push the message anyway. This is why kids that succeed academically almost always come from an environment where the adults in their lives prioritize it. Football coaches—both college and high school—are some of the biggest influences on these kids. They work for academic institutions. They have a moral responsibility to prioritize academics, whether it helps with recruiting or not.

If college isn’t for you then you don’t belong on a college football team. If we untether sports from academics then sports are not longer useful for universities to achieve their stated goals as educational institutions.

Also, in a world where the economy increasingly depends on information, I would argue that if a college “isn’t for everyone” then it’s failing its students. A pedagogy that depends on the student to already have the skills necessary to succeed is exclusionary and ineffective.

College football is the de facto minor league for the NFL... how else are kids that would otherwise not attend college supposed to make it to the NFL? You can grandstand and posture all you want about "academics" in college football, but the kids being recruited are just using the system that is in place... it's not like they have another option.

Until the NFL creates a true minor league, major college coaches have no incentive to tout academics with blue chip recruits unless that recruit values an education... and lets be honest, most high level recruits are just looking for the best path to the NFL for themselves.

So by this shitty logic...if Grant Newsome went to Bama...he'd be a completely different person? Maybe even a drug dealer?

Dude, shut the fuck up with that nonsense and listen to yourself.

Michigan is not some holier-than-thou institution that guarantees you success in life outside of football.

Go look up Grant Newsome's upbringing and then look at "drug dealers"...that had everything to do with this scenario compared to which school each person chose.

If Grant Newsome went to Bama, he'd still be Grant Newsome. If drug dealer went to Michigan...which by the way does and has happened...he'd still be a troubled young man and maybe a change of environment and circumstance changes his life, maybe it doesn't. You have no idea, none of us do.

I think you might consider the difference between a conclusion and an argument.

Two schools are equal except for the academic reputation.  Do you choose the school with the lower reputation?

Hey, my brothers and sisters would like to go to the same school as I do.  Can you take care of them?

Why does anyone want NFL success?  To get the money, the fame, to get the girl, to take care of your mother, to have fun with your friends in style.  Would you sign up for a Super Bowl MVP ring but you have to live the rest of your life alone on an island?

Elite athletes want the same things as you and me but compared to me they have at least one more avenue to get there.
