Reschke recruiting Dawson for MSU, Dawson doesn't notice.

Submitted by Butterfield on

I dislike Mark Snyder more than I dislike Rosenberg.  I'm not sure why.  I'm not sure it matters why.  Probably because in my head, he's the guy wearing the black framed glasses drinking a PBR at the end of whatever bar is hipster this month.

But I'll still read his stuff in the off event that a useful tidbit of information will be hiding amongst the otherwise drivel-filled paragraphs.  Today, he has two separate pieces that were terrible but did produce these quotes:

Jon Reshcke, on being a recruiting tool for MSU:

"I've still been recruiting guys, like (Cass Tech offensive guard) Dave Dawson, and it's actually helpful," he said. "You can tell guys we need you to step in and help us get a better record next year. It can work as an advantage."

David Dawson, on his recruitment status:

"Those are the three I'm listening to," he said Wednesday at the Free Press/National Football Foundation Dream Team banquet at the Dearborn Inn. "All three programs have a lot to offer, in football, academics, and Ohio State and Michigan are close to home. Alabama, that's a great program."

No mention of MSU, so Reschke may be more "helpful" if he were to focus on keeping the committed two stars in Dantonio's class rather than trying to attract new "elite" level talent.

Outside of Tony Mandarich and Flozell Adams, MSU has done very little in the way of developing offensive linemen.  Dawson would be much better off picking those other schools mentioned.

Once again, no elite talent will ever land at state in football. Ever. Period.

I think their highest ranked guy in years was Lawrence Thomas and he's not even playing the position he was a star at in HS. He's a FB now.

Slightly smaller pool for him, he attended the sorting round (where you see 25 participants) and then he was actually chosen as one of the Elite 11. I would consider getting a guy chosen as an Elite 11 guy in any year to be an elite recruit, but I suppose it's your own judgement call as to where you cut off "elite" status.

Let's assume he would have dropped out of Michigan because your high school aged brother didn't think he was smart.

Michigan didn't want to gamble on him qualifying and he qualified, its over.  Don't throw out guesses on how he's doing at MSU because you're upset about that.

There will always be a Charles Rogers here and there. He was the #1 overall recruit to ESPN (the only guys in the game) at the time, and though Michigan recruited him hard Saban made it clear the academic requirements for him in East Lansing would not be as burdensome. Saginaw, by the way, is a pretty pro-Sparty town. Getting Woodley out of there was a bit of a coup at the time, and involved getting Jerome Jackson first.

Rogers is only a few days younger than my brother, who's a year younger than me. So my freshman year at Michigan (1998 football season) was when his recruitment was going on in earnest. However he had some academic troubles that held him back a year (today he would have been funneled to a military prep school) and that put him the top overall recruit in '99. Saban left before the bowl game at the end of '99, when Rogers wasn't on campus but had been building a relationship with Saban and to the Spartans for over a year. Then he had to sit out all of 2000 because he couldn't hack it as a student.

Plaxico was a one-off JUCO and one of the driving forces behind the reforms that led to graduation success rate being a thing. MSU got to have him for a year, during which time he never went to class because LOL, and then went to the NFL before that could catch up with him. I remember thinking it horribly unfair that they got to do that.

Don't forget Shonte Peoples and even Roy Manning Jr. Regarding academics, Charles Rogers "red-shirted" his 1st year to get his academics in order. He only played for MSU for two years before going pro and becoming the #2 overall pick. I still think he would have been an elite NFL WR if he hadn't broken his collarbone twice. People think that weed was to blame for his poor career but I don't buy it. He was "blowin erry day" since he was at Saginaw High. The real culprit was the painkillers he got addicted to post-collarbone injuries. Plenty of blame should be on Rogers himself but there's no denying he was a victim of bad luck.

They've been able to recruit some top talent historically; just not as much as other elite programs.  Charles Rogers was a stud in HS, and they've had a fair number of 4* kids throughout the years.  And sometimes elite HS talent doesn't pan out; I like kids like Campbell for being a good kid while at UM, but he's a recent 5* that failed to live up to the hype.

Not concerned with Reschke unless he comes to us or MSU recruiting in general.  If Dawson missed us and comes back to UM then great, if not whatever.
