Potential risers in our 2020 class?

Submitted by TK on July 3rd, 2019 at 2:52 PM

I feel like this year’s class is excellent so far, so no star gazing for me. But it seems like we have some guys that are ranked below where they should be on the composite and hopefully will make a jump up in the rankings. Our average is below 90 this year which is lower than most years past. Any good candidates to make a jump up and improve that score?

I realize some will inevitably go down but seems like a few should go up when they re-evaluate.

1. McGregor is a 5 star to 247 but rivals has him as the 11th best player in the state (?) and not in the top 250.

2. Morant is a top 50 to 247 but composite not in the top 150.

3. Wilson seems like a kid that will make a leap as he has really been moving up steadily.

4. JD Johnson has a very low 247 rating and should move up if he has a big year as the starting QB.

Any other chatter about guys who might move up? I don’t really follow the national sites and often times they mention if a recruit is going to move up in the rankings

i think mohan will have one of the best careers from the current crop.  who knows if the services will move him up or down but he should be on his way up

From a purely mathematical perspective:

McGregor once Rivals does anything resembling a real ranking. He'll be a top 30 5-start in the composite.

Morant for similar reasons to McGregor. Will be in the top 100.

Corum has some spread on the 247 side with ESPN and Rivals being higher on him. Could mean he moves up or maybe down.

Lewis has a bit of a spread IIRC on the Rivals/ESPN side so those could come closer together with the 247 numbers and move him up a bit.

Other movers based not on 1 site lagging behind as much:

Persi was a first year OT last year after being a TE. Could rise as he learns to play OT instead of just being an athlete in that position.

Atteberry had some bad testing numbers so if those improve he could move a bit.

Mohan was one of those tweener guys that get ranked all over the place because scouting services try to peg him as a Safety or Athlete or LB. With the offers he had, could see him moving up as well.

The only other thoughts I have right now is Henning was injured last year so he could move in either direction. Up if some places were concerned with his injury and didn't see enough of him. Down because he started high based off of his earlier seasons and getting to see him again might result in a drop.

Jenkins, if he gains some weight and starts that transition to DT he could get moved out of the SDE rankings.

Mazzccua is another Persi type guy who hasn't been playing his position (or football) a ton yet.

Agree, with emphasis on Lewis, Atteberry, Corum, Morant, Persi, and McGregor.  All of their rankings have either big spreads that should be consolidated or they're based on old scouting that doesn't apply any more.

I'll add Matthew Hibner to the list.  If he truly is another Jake Butt as has been described on this site, he will rise very far.

I appreciate the effort you put into your answer. Good stuff. I don't want to jinx anything, but I think Rice will belong on your list too. I predict the average rating of the 2020 class will end up right on par with 2019, maybe a bit higher.

I have a slightly different question. Who are going to be the most underrated in the final rankings? I'll suggest Jenkins, Mohan and Dennis.

I didn't include Rice just because he hasn't committed yet.

As for the most underrated at the end of the cycle... I don't know because each guy is rated where they are for a reason. Mathematical spread, new position, no "traditional" position, under-scouted region, etc. No one is that guy that the coaches believe in that the scouting sites just don't think highly of.

Mohan could end up like Hudson and sit in that 3.5 star range because he isn't a prototypical anything. Dennis could be just like Sainristil because he's in Mass and isn't THE top guy in the state. I don't think Jenkins will move that much because he's a SDE playing 3T right now and I don't think he'll get big enough fast enough to be a DT recruit.

I think Persi could end up in that conversation. He's a good athlete with a good HS coach and is still new to the position with room to grow.

Based on nothing at all I bet the low 3 stars get bumped just because they committed to Michigan, I bet the QB gets bumped up because he has been a back up until this year, and the guys in big market type environments get bumped because of exposure. The stay the same crop will be the northeast guys, guys that get nicked, and and the guys that didn't do the camp circuit.

Recruiting services only have so many resources, so the easier they can identify you the better chance you will get rated higher.

Wilson and Hibner should rise. Corum's 247 ranking makes no sense so I'd guess they end up being more closely aligned with where ESPN and Rivals have him ranked. Dennis might get the same treatment as Sainristil so perhaps no bump there. McGregor will rise once Rivals does a better job evaluating him.

My favorite player from this entire class might be Persi though. He's a rich man's Ryan Hayes and we all know what kind of ceiling Hayes has if he continues to progress. He's going to skyrocket up the rankings before the dust settles. Hill-Green is underrated in my opinion. And it'll be interesting to see what happens with Mullings since he doesn't have much tape at linebacker.

OT: Is anyone else getting an ad overload? Seems like my MGoBlog view changed today and I am seeing a bigger ad above the banner, bigger ads on the side and ads in the middle of the comments, like every 5th comment an ad.

Not complaining (free site, they need to make money some how) but just curious if others are seeing this change too.

Edit: Actually, not sure what is happening but some of my other regular websites I am getting ad overload as well, example is DoctorofCredit. Not sure what's happening but maybe google changed their ads layout or something?

I am, too.

Huge ad at the top for American Legion commemorative coins, and at least 3 ads within this thread for the Niagara Falls Fireworks tonight at 10 pm.  (Edit: if I hopped in my car and left right now, Google Maps says I won't be to Niagara Falls until 10:47 pm)

Once you get past the top 50 - 75 rated players, the next group doesn't matter if they are ranked 145 or 208 or 415 or 532. It's about development and desire.

People won't like this but I think McGregor drops in the next rankings and that 3 of the current commits won't sign with Michigan in December or February.

McGregor - A borderline 5 star in 247 with a Rivals rating of generic 3 star. Rivals will catch up. He'll move up

Morant - Ranked as the top safety in the country by 247, while Rivals has him as the #20 safety in the country. All you have to do is watch his tape to know who is right. He'll move up

Henning- Was a 5 star on 247 but had a hip issue during his junior year that limited him. Will move up if he performs how he should his senior year

JD Johnson- Was the back up to Spencer Rattler and this will be his first year as full time starter. He performed well in his limited starts as a junior and definitely will move up from #769 on 247

Persi - Moved from TE to OL this past season. Has performed very well at camps. Likely to move up with another season at OL

Mazzccua - New to football. But likely to move up with another year of experience

Hibner - Currently ranked #1088, but has been killing it at camps. Likely to move up

What UM commits are participating at the opening? I predict whoever is there will move up.

Apparently 247 listed their dream team at the opening and there’s an uncommitted 3* qb who is tearing it up. Also the three wide receivers selected are all committed to OSU.

One comment on our recruiting in general: I just get this feeling that, assuming JJ McCarthy stays in the 2021 class and Don Brown stays in Ann Arbor, by the time McCarthy takes over the reigns at QB (probably not as a true freshman, but with his film I'd be shocked if he was not the starter in his second year on campus), this team will be a force to be reckoned with and have bona fide national title or bust goals. As much as I love Dylan McCaffery, based on his film, JJ McCarthy is on a different level as a Harbaugh QB recruit.  With the O-Line and skill position talent added to the team in 2019 and 2020, McCarthy will be taking charge of a loaded roster top to bottom.

I like the class but it's kind of a bummer that we didn't have much of a presence at the opening finals. For that reason I'm not sure if many guys will rise a ton. That's the premier camp to rise up the rankings. Usually we have a lot of players do well there. Also JD Johnson not being in the elite 11 will dampen his ranking.

I think Wilson and Corum will both move up, with McGregor being a coin flip.

If anyone is going to move down, I think it's Henning. This is a loaded WR class, and I could see him getting passed by a few others.

Jordan Morant is the #1 safety in the class.

Michigan is in  the Top 10. If Michigan is going to be in the top 2 or 3 they're going to have to get into the final 4.

As far as JD Johnson, I wouldn't get hopes up too high for him to move up much higher. He's ranked at the #29 pro style QB in 247's proprietary ranking. I don't know what you're expecting out of him.

https://247sports.com/Season/2020-Football/RecruitRankings/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool&Position=PRO

I am not sure he will ever be named starter at Michigan other than through injury to QBs ahead of him.

Hope in the future, Michigan could get a little of the boost other schools get just for signing a recruit. That would be a great sign of respect.
