Pickin' and Grinnin - This Week's Games

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on October 6th, 2022 at 9:29 PM

Mates,

Some interesting lines on this week's games.  Picking a few of interest.  As always, the favorite is the first listed, an '@' means 'at', showing you the home team.  Point spread in the middle.  Pick 'em with the points:

Fav               Points           Dog

Neb                  3               @ Rutgers  - Look at Nebraska, favored on the road

Michigan           22.5           @IU

@ MD                3               Purdue

ohio (YTO)         27             @sparty  -  would be a shame if sparty got trucked.

@ND                 3.5             BYU

@ILL                  3.5            Iowa

Texas                  9              @Okla -  at least someone thinks Texas is 'back'.

Have a great weekend and Go Blue!

Spartichaos
BYU covers against the fighting still-overrateds
Illinois
Texas (they're not necessarily back, but Oklahoma is gone)

Ewers is expected to start against Oklahoma. I suppose they figure the mullet is worth at least 7 for Texas.

Don't see how osu doesn't win by at least 35 unless they take their foot off the gas.

XM: hope you don't mind if I add one more:

@Alabama 24 TAMU

How badly does Saban pound Jimbo?

Worth noting that Nebraska has been favored in every game this year except Oklahoma. Hell, even that game they were only 10.5 dogs. Vegas loves Nebraska for some reason

I’ve come to a realization that my picks are usually, Michigan covers and MSU doesn’t. Michigan will throttle IU by at least 30. Harbaugh may have figured out how to beat Ryan Day, but he owns MSU. Since Day started calling plays at Osu they’ve beat msu by: 45, 20, 24, 40, and 49. This year won’t be any different.

If I had said before the season started to pick a game that will have 2 undefeated teams playing each other in week 6, a lot of people would probably have said Alabama vs Texas A&M. No one would have said TCU vs Kansas.

As the only two 5-0 teams playing at noon, we're in a race with Kansas to be the first bowl eligible team of the year (Tenn and TCU are both 4-0). Thought that was kind of cool (though not terribly surprising, as we've been the king of the noon slot this year), and it'll be a fun little thing to keep track of as our game winds down Saturday...

I got a strong Wally Holland from Little Big League vibe from this, picking out a random stat that will be accomplished a few hours before others.

An interesting side note; that’s the 14th one-run game for the Tigers already this season. Tops for any team north of the Mason-Dixon Line, whose home games are not played in a dome.

Last year though, he was 6th in the American League in hitting right-handers he was facing for the first time, after the seventh inning, at home.

Lou has hit .416 lifetime versus Hanley in the month of September in even years.

Ok, I'll take a krak at it:

Rutgers will win outright.

Maryland takes the Boilers fairly easily (~ two TDs) as bad "Purdon't" returns to form this week.

Spartie gets buried early but scores enough in garbage time to scare the southern savages (the ones who placed a wager) into filling their poopercoolers.

ND gets "Marshalled" by BYU.

Iowa punts the Illini by the margin of three or four safeties.

The Sooners right their wagons and pull off a mild upset.

And Michigan rolls IU by 35, causing the head of Coach Allen to actually explode during his post-game press conference.

i think this is about where i am.  i will be surprised if IU keeps it very close for long, though i guess 22.5 pts isn't that big of a spread.

i still remember watching ohio score their 7th TD of the first half last year vs. sparty.   there was a special joy in seeing that.

Not that I'm gonna bet, but if I did I'd take these as my best bets:

OSU -27 @ MSU - I think they'll cover in the first half.

UM -22.5 @ IU - UM should be in the 40s and IU might score twice.

ILL -3.5 vs. Iowa - Illinois only needs to score 6 to cover.

Going with Rutger at home

Michigan will win but a late garbage time TD keeps us from covering the spread

Purdue won't Purdon't

Spartan Stadium will turn scarlet as YTO covers the spread against FYS

ND covers at home

Ferentz rebounds on his visit to Bert

BYU +3.5 for it all, not that I want to listen to any more talk about BYU being legit but because I actually heard someone lay out a path for ND to the postseason (despite losing at home!  To Marshall!) and that needs to be squashed once and for all.

Looking forward to MD beating Purdue, because I think MD is a fun team to watch this year and they're more a balanced team than Purdue can handle.  If there is one consistent theme that Jeff Brohm's Boilers have showed throughout his tenure, its that they are the most inconsistent team in the B1G.

OSU will boat race MSU again.  Day's offenses pass first, care only about passing, and then pass again.  MSU doesn't understand the whole 'passing' concept.  It's like they don't practice against the pass at all!

I'm betting that Bert beats Kirk.  But only because his offense plays it like the Harbaughffense did - safely running to wherever the LB's aren't.  This is Bert's kind of game.

I can't figure out BYU.  They beat solid-good teams, but get slaughtered by good-really good teams.  ND is sort in between those two ideals, and they're at home.  But who am I kidding?  Nobody likes ND.  Fuck ND.

If Ewers and Williams both play, the Red River Shootout will be as entertaining as ever - both teams can score, and both play traditional B12 defense (boy did Venables settle right into B12 tradition, eh?)  Don't care who wins - they both suck, but the game will be serious fun to watch!

Bama is going to mercilessly do things to TAMU that cannot be mentioned on this blog - it's family friendly, you know...

Last week was the first time in my 40 years of living, that i bet on Michigan  the last $20 i had i took Michigan, Utah, and Washington state. It was the only ticket i won last week.

  1. Nebraska wins by 10, leading Trev Alberts to proclaim that "all the questions about Jamaal Lord have been answered".
  2. Michigan 45-7
  3. MD covers
  4. YTO huge. Sparty is spiraling and we may have a Bobby Williams moment soon.
  5. BYU. How are they underdogs in this game again?
  6. Iowa covers but loses 16-15
  7. OK finds a way to cover and win in a shootout.

To my eyes, Maryland -3.0 looks like the lock of the week. As well as they moved the ball on our team, I see them winning by a comfortable margin in College Park.

Outside the B1G, I think we'll see just how hapless Texas and Oklahoma may be when they move over to the SEC.

A&M goes to Tuscaloosa and my guess is the players on Bama haven't forgotten about that loss in College Station last year.  This one won't be pretty, and - my guess is, there will be more than one sign about the #1 recruiting class in the country and NIL.

Auburn travels to Athens and those Georgia Bulldogs will show what they might be about.   It won't be close.

Tennessee visits LSU in an early game.   We won't know if either team is for real, but - it's another matchup of ranked SEC teams.

TCU at Kansas.  Game Day will be there, and I'll be cheering on those Jayhawks.

ND has a home game against BYU in Las Vega$.  The Cougars definitely have my support in this one.

Future B1G conference member UCLA will host Utah at the Rose Bowl.  We'll see just how strong UCLA's undefeated 5-0 record is.  The easy prediction is that there will be more Utah fans at the game than Bruin supporters.  The only question is - what's the over for the total number of fans?

In the B1G.

Rutgers wins at home over Nebraska.

Maryland, with Taulia, takes apart the Boilermakers secondary and wins in College Park.

The Badgers find something in Evanston and defeat Northwestern.

Iowa's defense travels, but their offense looks like it's still in Iowa City.  The Illini move up to "most favored status" to win the West.

The Spartans will show the Buckeyes exactly where the Woodshed is in Spartan Stadium, and then - will spend the next three hours seeing just how much wood the Buckeyes can chuck.  Stroud will use this game to as a highlight reel passing the ball for his Heisman campaign.

In Bloomington: 42-27.

Rutgers - Big Friday night home game for them to keep their shot at a bowl game.

IU Covers - This is a classic sleepwalk game with PSU on deck.  I see a game like NW Last year where it's 13-7 at half time.  Michigan wins and fans complaing.  27-14 Michigan.

Purdue - Purdue should really be undefeated this year with closes losses against good team in Syracuse and Penn State.  I still don't believe in the Maryland D at all.  Give me Purdue 30-24.

MSU Cover - Other sleepy game for Ohio State.  I see a better effort from them this week.  Close early and OSU pulls away in the second half.  34 - 21 OSU

ND Covers - BYU struggled against Utah St Last week.  Utah state lost 35-7 to Weber St and was down 14-0 to UConn.  ND's offense still not good, but defense starting to lock in.  24-10 ND.

Iowa - Iowa underrated after the Mich loss.  Give the Hawkeyes 20-17 over Illi.

Oklahoma Covers - Classic buy low spot.  This game is always close (think Mich vs. MSU).  37-34 Texas

Im actually going with Rutgers at home.  Im just not sold that Nebraska at all....

Michigan will cover, IU is bad, really bad.  Michigan is on the road so JH can not go 'that' deep into the bench...

Maryland - this is one of my locks of the week.  I am buying Maryland and it will only look good for us as they continue to pile up wins

YTO - Huge, Day plays the scoreboard game and always wants to make sure YTO scores "look" good on the next day.  This is just simply the most lopsided match up one could create.  My second lock of the week

BYU all the way, this is not in South Bend, ND is not good at all, this will be a joy to watch

Illinois all the way, this is my 3rd lock of the week. Lower scoring but very similar to the Michigan game.  Illinois can only lose this game if they truly give it away.

I kinda avoiding this one because I can't really get a read on either team.  Oklahoma's defense is terrible, but can I trust Texas.  They seem like a team that was so geared up for the Bama game and the way they lost it is having lingering effects.  But with Ewers coming back, I would take Texas

Other games I'm tracking..

Bama pounds A&M - Saban loves to twist the dagger when its in the body

@USC -13 WSU - USC offense is good but I believe at some point the defense is going to let them down keeping them from any chance for a CFP ticket

Utah -4.5 @UCLA - Just watched UCLA take Washington apart at home, but I am sticking with the Utes as the best overall team in the PAC-10

  • Rutgers hasn't been good...but I'll still take them here. What has Nebraska done to justify being road favorites?
  • OSU is going to cover -27 by halftime
  • BYU isn't that good, but ND is less gooder. I'll take the mormons and the points
  • Iowa beats Illinois and people start to realize they've still got a real shot at the west
