I don't think so, beyond a fascinating coaching search. I expect it would be similar to our hypothetical where the team is still really good/great but you have no idea what impact the new coach made until year 2-3.

Let's say they were to promote an assistant. Would they still be really good? Yeah. But who would you rather face in the playoff, Smart or a rookie head coach? Think about Day replacing Meyer.

Honestly he may do something like this because at some point, these guys are all competitive, and want to see how they compare against the best. See Urban, Saban.
When they go the League, though, they are often quickly revealed as guys who are great coaches as long as they have the best players...

I agree they are highly competitive. I do believe that Kirby and Saban and, for a second, the hypocrite at Clemson all recognize(d) they had a distinct talent advantage. Coaching acumen is less necessary. Leaving that would expose it. No way he leaves.

No, pretty good coaches too. You don’t go undefeated with a couple national titles without being pretty good with scheme, Xs and Os, Player development, team motivation, preparation, game planning, etc. Give credit where credit is due.
