OT - old guy in student section

Submitted by CJRockford on
So quick backstory. I'm old, turning 41 in May. Lifelong Michigan fan, went to college in Florida but never finished. Moved back to Michigan in mid-2013. Decided to finish my degree, so I enrolled part-time at UM-Flint and started in January of this year. All that brings me to the fact that I'm eligible to buy student football tickets for only $175 for the entire season! My question is am I going to be totally out of place in the student section and/or am I going to be the creepy old guy at the club??

but it's not uncommon to have 'adults' in the student section, especially for off games where a lot of kids are selling their tickets. Go for it. You're only a student once (probably)

Much as I really want to say "go for it, have fun"... if it were me, I would definitely feel out of place. The student section is full of rowdy 18-22 year olds, and as a student myself I can't say I see many adults there. If you can just own it and have fun in that sort of environment then absolutely go for it, but if you have hangups about standing all game and getting some weird looks from drunk students, those are probably legitimate hangups. Just my $.02

Yes, but who cares. 40 in the student section. I annoyed them they annoyed me but well worth it. Only one time did one student asked me how old are you anyway?

Go for it!  I've seen plenty of adults in the student section.  Plus, the student section is way more fun than the down in front sections.

Absolutely.  I'm older than you and I make it a point to go into the student section in the second half of every game I attend.  It's way more fun than the out-of-town alumni section which is at the top of the South endzone, surrounded by fans from the other team.

I love the energy, being near the band, and the general exuberance of the student section.  I can usually get a pretty good place to stand since some of the students leave, and the ones that stay crowd toward the front.  And since I don't have an actual "seat" over there, if anything becomes an issue, I can wander over somewhere else.

It's fun to get to play play college student for at least a few hours.  Hint: wear a a proper color maize shirt, or the official season shirt, so you won't stick out unnecessarily.

i sold a lot of my student tickets to older folks.  granted it was the dark times ('07-'10), i still never had anyone complain.  ushers may ask if you validated it, lol, but just have your ID handy.

....to the student section during games.  Better atmosphere and more room ( at the top).  I'm about your age.

It's only creepy if you are being creepy.  Ignore the yoga pants.

There are a lot of parents that go, as well as grad students who can be in their 30's.  I wouldn't worry about it.  In general I think it's more fun to go with people you know, no matter what section you're going to be in.

My parents got tickets for seats right above the student section, and then snuck down into the student section with me.  They were about 52 and 59 respectively, at that point, and absolutely had a blast.

You'll be fine.  There's really no place in the Big House like the student section.

My dad would take me to games in the student section when we was a 40+ yr old MBA student. You'll be fine as long you're wearing the right colors and cheer for the home team.

I will admit to having wandered over there a few times in the last few years later in the game, just to see what it is like now that my student experience is quickly coming up on the "20 years ago" mark, and it is still rather fun. Like someone said above, it helps to keep the shirt on - I thought about it once, then lifted it a few inches only to realize that 36-year old me is not 19-year old me when it comes to the abdomen. Your experience might be different in that regard, of course, but the point is that it is still exciting.

Which is precisely why not only do you have to buy those tickets but get there early enough to be in one of the areas where the cameras focus on ths students.  Paint your face but not so as to disguise your age.  We're all counting on you.  Be ridiculous.  Make sure we all can say at least once, "Hey there's CJ."  I wish I was there.

if you're concerned about being uncomfortable, you can stand at the top near the bowl rim. There's always room because the students cram down. Still a great view

I'm fabulous.  Kidding.  Go for it.  Tell them all scary stories about taxes and stuff.  Also yell "Down in front" and then say you are kidding.  Ask them to call you Grandpa.
