OT: Are you ready for... Doug Gottlieb, Basketball Coach?

Submitted by stephenrjking on

Well, then:

One day after joining Fox Sports, Doug Gottlieb will interview for Oklahoma State job https://t.co/ZjvAC6lWsY pic.twitter.com/n5Woj1WyWJ

I'm in the decided minority in that I think that Gottlieb is a good broadcaster. He produces interesting content, his hottakes are good show fodder, and he does some of the best radio teases in the business.

I suspect I'm not in the decided minority in looking at this: Gottlieb as a basketball coach would be an unmitigated disaster. Even giving him an interview is the kind of blunder that irreparably damages the reputation of that athletic department.

I just can't stand the guys personality. He reminds me of those kids I went to HS with in the suburbs who tried to act so hard like they were from inner city Detroit.

Just can't take anything the little doofus says seriously.

He's off too a good start with talent evaluation with his "Walton isn't in the same solar system as Juwan Evans" comment. I tried finding the tweet, but to my (not) surprise, it appears he deleted it.

I'm sorry, but what high school kid is going to want to play for this guy? I mean he just screams douche, phoney, and insecure. Then again so do a lot of D1 coaches, so hey he will probably fit right in.

Mmmm Hmmm

The floodgates of broadcasters to coaching are open--counting the seconds until Ball State hires Jason Whitlock and Vanderbilt hires Skip Bayless.

1) so he can find out the hard way that he isn't nearly as smart as he thinks he is; and 2) so he's off the air for a few years, at least until he gets fired. Gottlieb can be college hoops answer to Matt Mullen.

He might be a good coach, but this isn't good for Okie St. to lose a coach who claims they didn't prioritize basketball and then basically fall back on a legacy with no HC experience.

My own opinion is that this is the sort of coaching suggestion you make only when blackout drunk and possibly naked, but hey, I am neither an Oklahoma State fan or alum and therefor what do I know about the state of mind of their program other than lowballing Underwood was an insane, batshit move.

That being said, maybe Gottlieb is exactly the man they need right now.

OSU just got pantsed by Illinois because they had essentially given a mid-major coach a take it or leave it offer last year with the understanding it could be renogtiated if he improved the team. By most accounts I've read, when Underwood went to them at the end of the year to do just that, they didn't take him seriously, so he walked when Illinois greatly increased his salary and gave him a big assistant pool.

Gottlieb won't be making what Underwood made last year at Fox, and you've got to imagine that anything OSU gives him as an increase still won't be close to what actual coaches in that league make. Remember, not so long ago, they tried to poach Bill Self from KU because he was an alum, and had to have at least some confidence in their ability to do so. I can't imagine being a fan of their's now knowing how far they've fallen in esteem

What are his coaching credentials? Seems an odd hire. He's a broadcaster, not a coach, as far as I can see. Although I guess he has a lot of basketball knowledge.

I would rather be poked in the eye with a sharp stick than listen to this buffoon, but in the big picture...who cares.....GO BLUE!!!!

Asked this last night and didn't get an answer because the thread died.

Duncan Robinson...is he back next year or is he on the Spike/Donnal train to a 5th year elsewhere?

Sorry in advance for the thread hijack...I was thinking about the team next year because I saw Matthews is a projected first round pick in 2018 and I'd completely forgotten about him next year.
