You're going to make us give the freep clicks aren't you...

Edit:  In defense of OP, the article reads like a civil complaint.  It details the facts to support its complaint that it was denied access to Verlander for post-game comments and the efforts 'the reporter' undertook to get access.  Verlander then denied answering his/her questions.  There is nothing in the article to suggest who the reporter is or why Verlander refused to give a comment.

There's nothing here.  Don't bother clicking.

I have been a Detroit Free Press reader for two decades and even read it while this site called for its boycott. The paper has always exhibited a lack of integrity with its coverage of all topics including sports and politics.

Ironically, whenever Brian breaks his no politics rule and comments on the subject it mirrors presentation from the Detroit Free Press. The paper has delved into more gotcha journalism and click bait for cheap attention as of late. The only sports author I read from the paper is Mitch Albom and even he has his history.

It's not just "as of late." Remember, this is the paper that for years employed that bastion of journalistic integrity, Drew Sharp. If there was ever someone who was desperate for cheap attention, it was Bitter Little Drewie. He was Valenti with newsprint.

“Blocking a working reporter from doing his job is unprofessional, disappointing and intolerable,” Free Press executive editor Peter Bhatia said. “We will be protesting to MLB and the Astros.”

Intolerable? What a bunch of self righteous asshats. It's not like we can't find out what Verlander said from a variety of other sources. So denying the Freep access in no way shortchanges the public. Imagine, the Freep actually having a consequence for their perpetual arrogance. Yay!

Depending on the reason, banning him from the presser may well be "unprofessional, disappointing and intolerable".  But again, depending on the reason, it may not be - it may well be a perfectly adequate response to something the paper/reporter did/did not do.

But until there's a reason, we have no way of telling.  And all of the pearl clutching about it is ridiculous!

I think he's pissed because the FREEP posted a tongue-in-cheek headline after the game: Justin Verlander once again pitches Detroit Tigers to victory, 2-1 in Houston.

I saw it last night and thought the sports editor saw the boxscore and forgot which side JV pitched on.  Either way, he benefited by very generous press coverage in the FREEP, even during his so-so years.

I see people taking the side of JV, and I don't know if the feeling would be the same if it was a Detroit News reporter.  But dude is a millionaire.  He can answer the question of a simple beat writer who never had an agenda against him.  Or maybe just not answer his questions and tell him why to his face.

So - so years? Maybe 2 when he wasn't injured. 2013 - 2015, other than his first in the league were his only so - so years and he was injured in 2014. People believe he was hurt in 2013, but wouldn't admit it.  I don't think the Headline would have been the issue, because how would he have seen it. Was it even out before the reporters wanted to interview him? Sounds like you have definitely taken a side.

The tweet/article was online within minutes of the final out.  That's the only explanation that makes sense unless Verlander had a beef with the FREEP or Fenech before this.  But I don't remember hearing any issues when Houston was in town last month.

I just think the Astros made the wrong call in barring the reporter from the locker room.  It violated the MLBPA/BWAA agreement.  If JV didn't want to answer his questions, that's his right to do.  But the team should've let the guy in.

If this were the Tigers picking and choosing which local media outlet carries their water, I'd have an opinion.

Verlander is an Astro. We will see him maybe once a year. If he's got a problem with Fenech or the Freep and wants to pay the fine to flip them the metaphorical bird, I don't give a shit. This is the most I've talked about Anthony Fenech in my life. He should be grateful.

That headline doesn't even make any sense. If he had pitched a bad game and given up a bunch of runs, it would, but losing 2-1 is not the pitchers fault. It sounds like someone came up with that idea before the game, and thought they were so clever that they decided to use it no matter what as long as the Tigers won.

Asinine headline.

JV retired the first 12 batters in the game in a row.  Only gave up 2 hits.  Both dingers.  It was another awesome performance by him.  If I'm a field player, I feel like ass for only giving JV 1 run of suport against the worst team in the league.

On another note, I'm worried about JV getting screwed on the Cy Young again this year.  He's top 3 in all the major patching stats.  But he's also #1 in home runs given up.  Last night did not help in that regard.

That headline, which they later changed, is exactly why he's pissed. It actually read more like "Vintage Verlander Leads Tigers to 2 - 1 Win Over Astros".  It was an unprofessional, childish, and mean spirited headline. For the Freep to get all indignant and call the Astros is ridiculous.

The Free Press should be ashamed of themselves

Justin Verlander is irritating.  He and Aaron Rodgers have the same “I’m a god, you are blessed that you have the privilege to ask me questions” thing going on.  They should hang out.  They probably do hang out.
