Once you live out west it's hard to live in Florida.

It's been said that it is very hard for people from the west to really feel comfortable in the east. Not impossible, mind you.. one of my better friends at Michigan was from Arizona and now lives quite happily on the East Coast... but the lack of mountains and ecological diversity can leave you without a sense of place. McElwain has worked in the east before and has gone back west... to Oakland, Fresno State and Colorado State after each stint.
That being said, I think Dan Mullen would be a better bet for them from the SEC. He's done more with less in a talent barren state and runs an offense that their personnel can adapt to.

He just won a National Championship two years ago and now he is out?! Wow.
1. They will undoubtedly hire someone with the rumored vaults of Phil Nike open.
2. Whomever they hire will not have any misimpression about loyalty, tradition and program building.
Having sat through 7 seasons before Harbaugh, I do not regret doing so. If this is the future of college football, OK, but it is not a positive development.

Messed that up! Played in the national championship game ... maybe if he had won it, they would have kept him :) Time to turn in.

He'd essentially be an internal hire, though. Kind of like when Wisco brought in Chryst in spite of a lackluster tenure at Pitt.

McElwain would be a big surprise, wouldn't it? He hasn't done badly at Florida at all.
Frost has only been at UCF for a year, but it's been a good year. The upside is that there's a decent chance the guy can really coach; the downside is that there isn't enough data to know for sure yet, and a Frost hire basically continues a lot of the existing regime. Which might need some shaking up.
I think Holgorsen might actually be a good choice for them.

I live in Oregon. Make it so Phil!!
November 30th, 2016 at 12:23 AM ^
Seriously I like Dana for interesting football. If Dana Holgorsen coached Michigan... not so much. At Oregon, where I'm proximate if not partial...I might even get a couple seats and take my O friends.
GIF me a minute on the gif. Let me shop around...
Hear you go... video not a gif... but images to remember.
I was 13 when that happened...fun times.
Edit: Jeez - Fuck the NFL... Can you dig it?... Can you?

70's NFL. Where the weak were killed and eaten.
Steeler fans won't like hearing this, but Jack Lambert was a dirty MF'er - especially in '75. Bradshaw and Swann took a lot of abuse for the greasy stuff he inflicted on opposing offenses. Well, Swann brought some of that on himself because he was a bit of a dandy who ran his mouth. But poor dumbass Terry Bradshaw...

I'd go for Harsin.

When LSU and UT were jockeying for Herman, I thought that the loser of that battle should take a run a Dantonio.
He's clearly a good coach. The cons would be that is he too old to take over a high profile job. But neither of those schools is a turnaround and he would have them winning quickly.
I think that Dantonio should be a name on a lot of these short lists. He has a full blown turnaround in East Lansing. His biggest rival has a coach that can out recruit him at every turn. The future doesn't look nearly as bright for Sparty. Now is the perfect chance for Dantonio to cash out.

I think he's too old to be a plausible hire at a big-time program. And he's found himself a good spot--he just turned in a bomb of a season and could have another one and still wouldn't get fired, because he's brought MSU to heights not seen in 50 years and has earned his ticket. He's not a dynamite recruiter, but he can develop talent.
If he were five years younger I actually think he would be a good fit at Notre Dame, assuming Notre Dame is prepared to accept that it won't be competing with Alabama and Ohio State every single season. He can take the type of guys ND could qualify and coach them up into a tight group, with solid defense and surprisingly good traditional offense. It's his way.
But he's in his sixties, and guys that age aren't in high demand. Some of that may be unfair, but some of it is just good sense--when you hire a college coach you aren't just thinking about next year, but about five and ten years down the line. I don't think he will be coaching at a top level in ten years.

That's an interesting take on Mark being a solid fit at ND - and I agree. His ability to develop talent combined with ND's ability to attract better talent than Staee would be a nice combinitation. Even if they got 4-5 years out of him it would set them up nicely moving forward.
That being said - to hell with both of them.

In a typical year where there is maybe one high profile opening, his age (60) could be a very limiting factor. But this year, there are a large number of openings and not many obvious choices.
The fact that one of the biggest spending programs -- LSU -- just hired Hoke 2.0 with a serious speech impediment, tells me that there aren't a lot of quality choices. His record at Ole Miss was terrible (10–25 overall, 3–21 in SEC). LSU won more SEC games under his watch this season than all of his Ole Miss teams won. The guy isn't qualified for that job. And he's 55.

I don't think it's a poor double standard at all. Dantonio has proven his ability to build a team. Helfrich has only proven the ability to take a winning team with a great QB and continue to win for a season or two.

MSU is forging the Dantoni statue as we speak. Probably with that look on his face. If we're lucky it will look like this:
[insert Ronald McDonald Magic Johnson statue near Breslin here]

I agree.
It would be fun to see RR with that talent and resources.
Maybe we might end up playing them in a Rose Bowl sometime down the road.
That would be awesome for me.

Talent in Cali nearby, insane facilities, and, oh yeah NIKE money!
I don't know if PJ Fleck is ready for it, but he wouldn't be able to turn that job down.
