Optimistic Crystal Balls

Submitted by jbibiza on

The previous post was very pessimistic, but on the third page of comments came some good news... so for those who did not wade through the whole thing... Brace (Brian & Ace) picked both Asiasi and Tagaloa to Michigan! This was followed by another(less heralded) Asiasi ball to UM.  So I guess we are still very much in it.

Eh, well when it comes to the Ace/Brian crystal ballz, they're batting pretty good overall, and when it comes to UM predictions, it's even better. The only one they missed on is Cameron Chambers. They also 'missed' on Falcon and Hamilton, but they fit them correct the first time. Remember that the Brain/Ace ballz considers what they hear on all the rest of the sites, as well as what they might hear off the record from Webb and such.

Also, a pic of Harbaugh and Nate Johnson doing the dab was just posted. I'd embed a link, but I lack that skill. But more good news with him. It looks like he may stay the path.

Yeah, agree; I think I wanted McDoom more if UM had to choose just because McDoom's athletic and speed upside seem higher, but Johnson seems like a very natural, polished receiver.  His only downside is his size.  But he still plays like an outside receiver; like a taller junior/senior Gallon tye.  With maybe a bit more speed, though difficult to judge at this point.  I'm excited about him.

When I started following recruiting almost 10 years ago it was scout and rivals and that was it. ESPN crept in somewhere and didn't really add much. Then 247 came in and added the composite ranking, the free VIP trials here and there, and now the crystal ballz.

Much credit to them, they work hard and have come up with some really good stuff

Right. I was thinking about the composite rankings the other day. What a genius, yet extremely simple and obvious, idea. Now even scout and rivals subscribers end up on your site, and none of your competitors can really copy you. Not sure how scout or rivals didn't think of it 10 years ago.

247 was created by Rivals' co-founders

My understanding is that 247 was created by Rivals co-founders after the site was sold to Yahoo Sports. Back in the early 2000s, Rivals was the clear leader of the recruiting services. The user interface, recruiting methodology, message board, and content were great for the time, but the site just hasn't changed much over the past 15 years - not a surprise given the departure of the co-founders.

There were days when "Crystal Ballz" weren't available to use to speculate about those people who would commit to Michigan close to the time of National Signing Day. In the ten previous recruiting classes, these are the people who have committed to Michigan after January 1 of their class year:

Class of 2008 - Ricky Barnum, Justin Feagin, J. T. Floyd, Taylor Hill, Martavious Odoms. Patrick Omameh, Terrence Robinson, Roy Roundtree, Brandon Smith
Class of 2009 - Will Campbell, Denard Robinson, Je’Ron Stokes, Quinton Washington, Adrian Witty
Class of 2010 - Jibreel Black, Demar Dorsey, Davion Rogers and Jake Ryan
Class of 2011 - Chris Barnett, Russell Bellomy, Chris Bryant, Frank Clark, Keith Heitzman, Antonio Poole, Thomas Rawls, Raymon Taylor, Matt Wile

in the modern recruiting era is very scary. It's to the point that when we land a "major prospect" I assume something is inflating their rank. The last guy I was surprised about not living up to expectations was/is Kalis. I truly thought he'd be the next Hutchinson. He was a "can't miss" in my eyes and if being honest I'd call him a bust. He has played to the level you expect an generic 3* guy to play at, IMO. I didn't like Green's tape and I'm not thrilled with the Walker film. Gary is the last guy since Woodley/Henne that I truly think would be the gem in anyone's class. He'd be the best player in the Bama class, osu, LSU, etc. His ranking says "duh" to that but with a guy most have pegged to Michigan it's been rare. Actually, Peppers was actually underrated, IMO! He hasn't disappointed lol.

In the classes from 2006 to 2014, I counted 20 players who made significant contributions. There are 42 players listed in those classes, so that's just under a 50% hit rate--not bad considering lots of these players were last-minute adds or hastily-recruited in transition years.
