Najee Harris Explains His Commitment Decision

Submitted by Caesar on

I understand many are exhausted by the topic, particularly nearing NSD, but I found the article (link) interesting.

1. It really did come down to the final day, which I think acquits Sam Webb (some were accusing him of prolonging the story to get subscriptions).

2. He didn't commit to Michigan for reasons Harbaugh would respect. Michigan doesn't yet have the recruiting to claim that all their athletes will face off against the best in practice. Harris framed this a way Harbuagh would, talking about constantly getting better against the best football players in the country.

Have you seen Bama's DL?

That's like say Gary is a bust because he didn't start for Michigan last year.

I think there's a better chance Hand and Gary start for MSU from Day 1 than there is McDowell walks in and starts at Bama.

We'll see what Hand and Gary have this coming year when both will be starting for the first time. Then we'll be able to compare both of them to Malik.

I totally get what you're saying. So far, even as a freshman I saw more from Malik than I have Hand. It could be the continued limited snaps Hand has had behind the upperclassmen. I just haven't seen that flash and power I thought he was inevitably going to show when I saw him in HS.

Ever.  Hopefully, we've all moved on.  We've got some exciting backs and should be fun to see who will develop and be the go to guy(s) going forward.

I'll share for those interested:

CMH reached out about making a video for Harris while he was visiting AA in early December. Since NH isn't a big fan of attention, CMH thought it would be best to hold off on releasing the #NHtoAA video until (and if) he decided to commit. Posting the video beforehand very well may have upset Harris.

Anyways, CMH showed Harris the vid while they were visiting together, Harris loved it, and the next day was asking CMH and I how he could get the video onto his Instagram. We spent about a couple of hours working with him to get everything set up.

Given that the dude wasn't really one interested in attention, I had a few thoughts about this "how to upload to instagram" request:

1) He would upload it immediately as a "Wow this is a cool vid" and move on, nothing more.

2) He would wait to upload it and announce with it.

3) Wanted to know how to upload it just in case.

Obviously as time went on and he hadn't released it yet, option #1 was out of the question. Given how calculated and interested he seemed to be, it looked like #2 was becoming more likely. Unfortunately it was #3 and the video will never live to see the interwebs. Tis a bummer, too.

Solomon and Collins are still out there and Michigan and Bama are after both. The kid is an epic troll. Moms delete this thread and everyone that mentions his name.

Look at the bright side. Imagine the media shitstorm if we had signed the nations #1 RB. Then two weeks later we show the door to the coach who recruited him and would have coached him.

I feel it has already started at the RB position and he could have contributed further to the process. No, not going there. Not enough competition yet. What? Not a good argument. Actually, weak.

Najee Harris will be a good RB in college, not great.  He is slow, lacks burst and is a bit on the thin side for a power back.

Just calling it how it is:  Najee Harris has 5 stars, but in now way does his tape show a RB who will dominate on the college level....unless he has a great OL.

Perhaps that is the real reason why he chose Alabama:  He knows that his game needs big holes and he cant make it on his own.

Cam Akers looked best on film to me of this year RB class.  O'maury's film is also ridiculous, but of course, comes with the "look at the competition" caveat.  Would be hard to disagree with all the scouts and coaches out there about how good Najee is / can be, but I would not at all be surprised if O'maury is just as good.

I don't understand the explanation. So he wanted to practice with the best? Ok man, sounds like a really weird reason to pick a school. I'm confident we'll be fine and that will be the last time a player doesn't have the confidence to pull the trigger on U of M because of a lack of talent. This is the best recruiting class in the last 15-20 yrs, so let's finish strong i.e. Solomon, Gay, Collins, Martin & Bechton and let's win the Big Ten this year!

I think he looked at Bama's OL and Michigan's OL and determined they might be a better fit at least to start.  Bama strikes me as the ultimate college OL and DL.  They just wear other teams down, and can afford to start a freshman QB, but they are still looking for an offense that's significantly more diverse than a running game....other than Amari Cooper previously being able to double-move every corner in the SEC and Lane Kiffin signaling touchdown as the ball was snapped..

I can't tell if Najee was injured before the Army Game or if it happened during the game but he also didn't strike me as a Peppers-ish athlete on the carries he got.  Cam Akers looked like a better back to me.

I wish the guy no harm, I hope he does well in his career except when we face Bama in the post season someday and then I hope he gets blown up for an average of -5 yards per carry 8-)

3 stud RB ahead of him. I think he will be practicing for quite a while. He had a better chance of getting to start earlier at Michigan. We have a lot of good young RB. I hope one can break through but if will be difficult until our OL improves.

so was he or his mom lied about him being injured and need a surgery and need to go back to CA after the AAA game? If it's a true lie, i don't believe in what he or his mom said. Anyway his mom spell our coach's name wrong. No excuse for that.
