John U. Bacon: "If I had a guess" one year from now, Brad Bates will be the AD and one of the two Harbaughs will be the HC

Submitted by michgoblue on

John U. Bacon, just wrapped an interview on the Hugh Show.  When asked to guess who will be the HC of Michigan football one year from now, after giving several disclaimers and noting that it was just his guess, stated that one year from now, Brad Bates would be the AD and one of the two Harbaughs would be the HC.

He also said earlier in the interview that from talking to people who he knows who are close to Miles, Harbaugh and Harbaugh, he does not believe that any of that group would accept the HC spot with Brandon as AD.

Sorry, no link, as it was a radio interview.

"...he does not believe that any of that group would accept the HC spot with Brandon as AD."

We all know know the media, fans and talking heads have a low opinion of DB but this is the first disent I have heard from the coaching community.  I wonder how widespread this is?

I doubt Jim would go to the Raiders. They are more of a dumpster fire than we are. Not to mention the organization is arguably the worst run NFL franchise.

I know a majority of people think getting Jim Harbaugh is a long shot to become head coach. But let's assume for a minute that he has genuine interest in coming here and Brandon is no longer AD. Do you think some of the so-called "factions"within the program could undermine a potential hire given JH's comments a few years ago? I know Jamie Morris and other ex-players had issues with it and I assume some others within the administration did as well. I guess I'm just fearful that we would have a divided house (again) and it could squash any chance of him coming here.

As others have mentioned, he did put the big disclaimer out there that it was a guess, so basically we are still in "Wait and see" mode even in an environment of rampant speculation, but I will say one thing about his guess - the guess actually made me smile, and right now, tht's rather an accomplishment when it comes to this season.

Why are we so certain that Harbaugh has such a negative relationship with DB? Because Bacon told us so?

Just because he chose to go to the NFL doesn't mean anything about his relationship with Dave. The fact that DB never revealed that Harbaugh didn't want to come probably earned him some goodwill if anything.

but he's just throwing red meat to his audience here. One of his favorite phrases is "nobody knows anything" and in this situation, that applies to him, too.

As much as I want it to believe it to be true, here's what I think is closer to the reality: J.U.B., having been steeped in Michigan lore for as long as he has, is a true believer.  J.U.B. really wants it to be the case that Brandon is gone, and a Harbaugh is coming to rescue the program.  I want that too.  But it doesn't seem very likely.

And these comments don't help him in future, but then again, if there is a new athletic department administration, then how can anyone deny this guy a free press pass?

Because he is critical of the administration?  That is pretty fucking weak.

I do remember reading in his book that he already had heard the rumblings of Brady Hoke being Michigan's next coach either early in richrod's 3rd year, or sometime during or just after his second season....by all means he was correct on that account, hopefully he goes 2 for 2. I hope he found some wood to knock on after his prediction.

I would not rule out Steve Addazio as the head coach.  I would be OK with him.  He coached under Urban and has done well in two years at BC

Brandon would have hired Harbaugh in a second... pay attention people.. . he was actually miffed that Harbaugh rebuffed him and you can hear it in his press conference.... read between the lines and its quite apparent, that Harbaugh wanted to go to the pros.

In the espn article on Harbaugh, I was struck by him saying that you really can't afford to have any bad coaches on your entire staff, and that's why he has such a history of turnover with his position coaches.  This philosophy contrasts sharply to Hoke's loyalty to his staff, and seems like a better way to operate.  Bacon is really the only voice out there that gives me any hope there's a chance we get one of these guys.  Most other signs point to them staying in the NFL, but he's quite credible so it's hard to know what to think.
