My first thought is if this is a Penn State inside production to socially exonerate that sleaze bag JoPa.  Here's the list of people involved if anyone wants to bother to see if Penn State grads are amiss. :

Levinson will direct and executive produce through his Levinson/Fontana banner, with Jason Sosnoff and Tom Fontana also executive producing. Edward Pressman and Linday Sloane will also executive produce, along with Rick Nicita through his RP Media Company. Debora Cahn, John C. Richards, and David McKenna will write. The film will be produced in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Levinson is an American U grade here in DC.
Fontana is SUNY Buffalo.
Pressman is a well established film producer from NYC so no sniff of Nittany on him.
Sloane does not appear to have attended college (I may be wrong).
Nicita is like Pressman.
Cahn passes the sniff test too.
Richards looks like U of Windsor?
Too lazy to look up McKenna.

Overall looks like we won't be seeing any cognitive dissonance impacting this project.  But if they end up kissing Paterno's ass I'll be pretty steamed because fuck JoPa.

particular concept seems misguided.  Casting Pacino in the lead suggests that Paterno will be presented somewhat sympathetically.  I think such a delicate project could possibly be pulled off with the benefit of time and reflection, but certainly not right now.

It would be awesome if Pacino only agreed to play the part if he was allowed to portray Paterno using the voice of that cock-a-roach Tony Montana. And if he got in a fight with Sue Paterno in one scene and leaned over to Sandusky and said, "Is OK Jerry, another quaalude and she gonna love me again!"

In "Donnie Brasco" the focus of the story was changed to feature Pacino's Lefty character far more than the true story warranted. In fact, it took a lot of work to persuade Pacino that Lefty was the only part in that movie that fit him. The price of getting Pacino to play ball was to give Lefty more lines and make him more sympathetic.

The Brasco/Sonny Black relationship was in real life the far more important one, and Sonny Black was also a much more interesting character, with a few traits that go against the typical mob crew boss persona.

Pacino is a great actor and could also play him as being just as guilty as Sandusky for everything that happened and villify him even more, well at least to everyone but PSU fans.  It will all depend on the script, but I doubt they are doing this movie to make any of them look innocent and needing sympathy, with what happened there.

An unapologetic exploration of what drove Paterno to cover for his friend, and how he justified it to himself, could be a really interesting piece. I think most on this blog will get the nuance but some certainly won't like the positive aspects of his life that will be presented. You can't do "what makes regular people do terrible things?" without showing some good for contrast.

That could be the case, but I sincerely doubt it. Given that several are now going to jail for knowing and not acting, HBO making Paterno look in any way innocent or even as existing in some "different opinions can be had here" gray area would lead a LOT of folks to go after HBO. I think they include at least one scene where he is shown to find out and does nothing...

could also cost HBO a lot of money if it "assumes facts not in evidence" so to speak. It seems like a no-win. I just don't think this project is well conceived, and I don't think it will be well received. Just my opinion. I think it is much better suited as a 30 for 30 type of deal.

"After becoming the winningest coach in college football history, Joe Paterno is embroiled in Penn State's Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal, challenging his legacy and forcing him to face questions of institutional failure on behalf of the victims," the movie's official logline reads, per Variety

Umm wasn't Joe part of the failure? I have a feeling we're going to be white-outed.

There is certainly enough material for a series like "OJ - Made in America". A two hour movie is a short timeframe to tell the story.

I thought JoePa could always blame not seeing any wrongdoing on his spectacles. Talk about coke bottles, those fucking things could harness the sun and burn all types of matter.

Seriously, if Pacino plays it like DeNiro did with Bernie I think sympathy will be the last thing we feel for JoePa.
