Looking forward to having a coaching search after next year
January 8th, 2021 at 3:21 PM ^
Fuck this board is miserable, you are welcome to find another team to cheer for.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:22 PM ^
Feel free to break down for me how things are going to noticeably change in one year with the roster we have and what we have incoming.
The reality is if we have another poor season and get boat-raced by OSU, he's out.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:31 PM ^
I was in the Fickell train, but with a low buy out and lower end salary with incentives based on performance then in okay with this contract. If things are true that Michigan hampers it’s football program then other coaches are aware of this too. Do I go to a school that will let me do whatever I want to win or go to school that put up obstacles? This notion that Jim is a bad coach is a joke. Look at Cars last 3 years, Rich Rod, Hoke, and now Harbaugh maybe the school is the problem.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:33 PM ^
Apparently you have not been watching this team under his leadership over the last 6 years, but I am happy to enlighten you if you would like as I have a short list that you can peruse.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:36 PM ^
Literally there is nobody at the university who was present for all of those coaching stints. Not an athletic director, nor a university president, nor anybody else with power to influence the program. So unless you're insinuating that the fanbase or the school janitor who's been working for 20 years is to blame, I think you're barking up the wrong tree
January 8th, 2021 at 3:47 PM ^
It seems like the only options is to play by the rules or not. Michigan take the high road, if you don’t understand that then I don’t know what to tell you.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:51 PM ^
By your logic, UM Basketball has to be breaking the rules since they have the number 1 class.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:58 PM ^
Basketball recruiting is different on many levels. Duke has the number 2 and 7 kids signed and the number 3 committed. All 3 are Higher than Michigan’s best commit. Who else took 6 kids in the top group of schools? This is sort of the same as Michigan football recruiting always being around 10 but never a great average.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:08 PM ^
Any recruiting expert will tell you that basketball recruiting generally is far dirtier than football recruiting. See also the federal cases against multiple teams. The money-man excuse is bullshit.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:49 PM ^
The key word in that statement is "generally", which you underemphasize. Programs can still recruit well without relying on the bag - especially when you only need to get < 5 kids per year.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:00 PM ^
They are breaking the rules. That’s why Mrs Howard deleted the “imagine doing this but not paying anyone” tweet
January 8th, 2021 at 4:14 PM ^
No... they dont have to break the rules--
1- juwann is doing this with image instead of money-with the promise to get into the pros
2-basketball doesnt have to do this with 20-26 recruits like football -just get a hand full of great 5 star kids
3- juwann came into a great bball program at its peak
4-maybe mrs howard was told "you cant win on social media- so stay off"
5-juwann already had inroads into recruits because his kids were right in the thick of it..
January 8th, 2021 at 4:45 PM ^
Yep. Because recruiting for 80+ scholarships in an 11 on 11 sport is exactly the same as recruiting for...
checks notes...
basketball
January 8th, 2021 at 4:46 PM ^
Thank you!!!! Somehow none of the other sports and coaches are hampered by the university, but they are intentionally holding the football program back??? That’s illogical! Harbaugh has to higher better assistants, he needs to develop players more and he has to stop meddling with his OC’s playcalling. That all falls on him! Not the president or AD.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:05 PM ^
worldwide--
i agree-- but when it comes to college it is all about recruiting..., hire about 5 "a+" recruiters and the rest decent coaches and you have a great team... there is a reason alabama's coaches -besides saban- suck when they leave- it is very easy to coach up 5-stars....
January 8th, 2021 at 4:08 PM ^
Carr had us a few plays out of being in a National Title game in his penultimate season with a Rose Bowl trip, and even in that horrific 2007 season, after losing to App St. and thrashed by Oregon, we, again, were an Ohio State win away from winning the Big Ten. If that’s bad, I’ll take that bad over Harbaugh’s bad any day.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:32 PM ^
Lmao yeah the boosters put a gun to Jim's head and prevented him from recruiting any more DTs
We're gonna run the patented 0-6-5 defense with our new DC
January 8th, 2021 at 8:18 PM ^
I'm just curious. Where are you "back "from?
January 8th, 2021 at 3:35 PM ^
Feel free to suck a fuck.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:43 PM ^
+1 Insightful
January 8th, 2021 at 3:45 PM ^
i think the proper response is "how exactly does one suck a fuck?"
January 8th, 2021 at 4:02 PM ^
don't ask, just upvote and hope that it works out ok
January 8th, 2021 at 3:54 PM ^
Based on the tone of your comment, UM is doomed to suck next year no matter who is coaching the team. Might as well stick with what we have then, eh?
January 8th, 2021 at 3:22 PM ^
But you can’t find another company to bankrupt Dave.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:28 PM ^
They literally just negotiated a contract with the specific purpose of making it easier to fire him. All signs point to a 2021 coaching search.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:53 PM ^
Good point and they are definitely making Harbaugh’s job harder. Recruiting players to play for a coach who clearly doesn’t have the administration’s support will not be easy. Every opposing recruiter will be sure to point this out.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:33 PM ^
Merely stating the facts.
As an aside, whether JH should be Michigan HC or not depends on the contract. Need to realize this is business. He was worth the money when he came in as he got everyone excited. If his contract is monetarily the same, then he is not worth it. If its significantly lower, he may be.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:35 PM ^
I love my school and I love this team, it is just the head coach who I have seen for the last 6 years is not the right person for the job.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:47 PM ^
Tbf most of the board said similar about Beilein circa 2015/2016.
Find an effective, healthy QB and everything changes in a hurry. It's pretty shocking that JH has missed the past few seasons, especially with Milton over McNamara, but hard to see that happening this upcoming season.
At any rate, you're just going to have to suck it up because the other option isn't fun or healthy.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:50 PM ^
Yes, this board has as much enthusiasm for Jim as him team does.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:06 PM ^
You know this from a personal experience?
If you followed half of the last two classes [only], you’d know this is false. Most of this team loves the guy. The few do not outweigh the many.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:52 PM ^
I always wondered how anyone can not simply enjoy what good comes instead of always complaining and wanting something better. I can see that when it's something you control that you want to improve on, but when it's completely out of your control just chill and enjoy what comes.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:34 PM ^
If you’re optimistic and they lose, you get ridiculed. If you are negative and they win, everyone is so happy that they are winning that they ignore the people who were miserable.
In 2016 and 2018 they went into Columbus in the top 4 in the playoff. In 2016, Don Brown’s defense couldn’t get a stop (while at the same time getting boned by John O’Neil’s crew) in the last drive of regulation or OT when surprise, surprise, they couldn’t force a FG attempt, then in 2018 the DC who had full autonomy over the defense saw 62 put up. And somehow he kept his job into the next year, where they slightly improved and “only” gave up 56. How he kept his job beyond that still stuns me.
Harbaugh’s two biggest mistakes at Michigan were keeping Drevno and Brown for at least one or two seasons too long.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:57 PM ^
a 2-6 season (because that's what it really was) resulting in a re-hired coach is what is miserable. There have been so many apologists on this board for JH, along with a whole host of rash takes. Regardless, in real life when any of us go 2-6 as executives in our own businesses, we typically need to find new work, or should. If what we're producing is the same salami everyone else is making, except that after 6 years we're now making it worse than our competitors who have inferior salami machines-- something is seriously wrong w/ the ingredients.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:02 PM ^
Can't wait for all the excuses for next year when it will be proved that this year wasn't a "fluke stupid weird covid season". Just like all the excuses we heard going into Hoke's last year.
Excuse me if I don't have faith in a head coach turning things around when he had to tell his players to clap when someone made a good catch. Or the fact that our biggest rivals would happily raise the money themselves for us to keep him.
January 9th, 2021 at 9:24 AM ^
Sums it up nicely
January 8th, 2021 at 6:02 PM ^
It absolutely is at times. I found this board maybe 10-15 years ago and loved it. I largely still do, but FFS sometimes.
During the great COVID arguments of 2020 I was never so disheartened as when I’d read on here about how much America sucks and literally how “I hate this country.” I honestly feel bad for people who are so miserable that everything in life is bad, negative, or without hope.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:36 PM ^
What if the AD did their due dilligence and there was nobody better available?
Then this was the best option.
We will never know if they actually tried to hire someone else but we do know they renogatiated and most probably left the University in a much better position to fire him next year if things do not improve.
I was hoping to upgrade to the like many of you here, but was it really a possibility this year?
January 8th, 2021 at 3:57 PM ^
Do you really think Campbell wouldn't leave Ames? He made $3.5 million this year, even with the AD losing a chunk of money this year they could still afford to pay him $5 million minimum.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:09 PM ^
Is Campbell an upgrade? Matt Campbell is Rich Rod all over.
Hot name in college football? Check.
Recruits 3-stars, Gets 5-star production? Check.
Can’t beat his main rival? Check.
January 8th, 2021 at 4:24 PM ^
He wasn't going to. I know folks like to think it was a forgone conclusion he would have taken it, but it wasn't.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:01 PM ^
I wonder if it bothers Jim that he won't be the highest paid football coach in the state anymore. From what's been reported, Harbaugh will be making $4M guaranteed, vs Mel Tucker making $5.5M guaranteed.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:50 PM ^
Mel Tucker beat Harbaugh head to head in his first year on the job with lower ranked recruits across the board. Mel Tucker deserves to make more than Harbaugh.
January 8th, 2021 at 5:16 PM ^
Always with the drama
January 8th, 2021 at 3:04 PM ^
Not sure how excited I may or may not be, but at least it's something.
January 8th, 2021 at 3:05 PM ^
Balas must have OCD
January 8th, 2021 at 3:09 PM ^
I remember feeling the same way as Jim when I saw this gif years ago. Just goes to show how little we know.
