Evaluation of QB mechanics nowadays is very weird to me. In a world where Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes are some of the best QBs in the NFL and are known for unorthodox mechanics, in evaluation of young QBs, it seems like mechanics are still emphasized unless the evaluators choose not to focus on it for certain players. Guys like Drew Allar and Dylan Raiola are/were praised in their recruiting profiles for being able to throw off platform and with different arm angles
I don't know, one of the keys to learning skills at a high level is that you first need to understand and execute the rules in order to break them properly. Every skill repeat the fundementals until they are so damn ingrained that you can start to vary them in unorthodox ways and still keep at a high level. You don't teach kids to take fade away jumpers when you teach how to shoot. You teach the proper form first. so not surprising a high school would be using 'proper mechanics'/
Funny what the eyes want to see. I thought Air’s release was exceptionally quick and form was consistent. I thought Jayden had a slower release with a hitch.
Admittedly I havven’t and will not watch a snap. Guessing when he gets on campus the staff is going to start a stop watch from the snap to throw and anther for time to distance and velocity. I’m one that thinks if JJ leaves for the nfl we had a great season and I also don’t think Davis starts as a tr fr ifJJ leaves. I just don’t think he will be ready.
Imo that battle would be Orji, Warren or Tuttle and possibly another transfer in.. 2024 is a long way off. I’d be surprised and impressed if Davis came in and won the job as a tr fr, but also would look at that schedule and hope like heck an upper class man won the spot should JJ go early.
Air's is definitely quick and compact, but he'll have to learn how to reach back while keeping it quick. I like his accuracy too.
I didn't see a hitch in Jayden's motion, but it's definitely too long, goes too low in the back. He'll have to learn how to release the ball quicker and keep it higher. He looks like he's played a lot more baseball than Air.
Also, I know nothing.
Davis and Noland are just different QBs. Davis is slightly smaller, can improvise, throw on the run, and has that "it" factor. Noland is the more prototypical QB with consistent mechanics and release. They're both pretty on par with what Michigan and OSU have looked for recently in their QBs

Michigan one of the few teams to fluster Stroud and OSU offense. I don’t think this makes Stroud and OSU soft. I tend to look at it as a compliment to M football for what they were able to accomplish against the number 2 pick in the NFL draft.
From what I have seen Stroud stood strong in the face of adversity, facing the media after a devastating loss, two years in a row. That was impressive. Contrast that with JJ McCarthy, petulant, storming off the stage, after TCU game.

Drills are overrated. Jay Cutler probably looks more impressive than Tom Brady in drills.
That is a lock - Cutler had the arm strength to be a HOF but lacked the mentality and football IQ.
There are also the intangibles which can't be measured - imagine Tom Brady vs. Ryan Leaf at an Elite 11 like competition. I bet not even 1 out of 100 coaches or scouts would have picked Brady.

Cutler played too long for the Bears which is where QB talent goes to die.
I'd say Fields will be the next QB to die there, but I also am not certain I would designate him as a QB Talent - especially compared to early Cutler.

He didn’t stay very long on the Bears. If he had, his career would have been cut in half.

I prefer Ronnie Coleman myself. Cutler's leg stomp was legendary though.
Looks like Jadyn pats the ball on his wind-up, costs him some time getting the ball out and tips the D that the ball is coming. His release is so smooth though. No wasted motion when he turns with the ball.
The biggest difference to me is that Air is very deliberately focused on where exactly the ball is going to go. Jadyn sometimes it looks like he's not sure where the ball is going until it leaves his hand. Both have the high school mechanical things that seem very fixable.
Yeah, most want to see they have the ability to play at an elite level. Not perfect college ready mechanics which no qb has. What they do in hs or elite 11 doesn’t mean anything to me. Fans get to worked up on this recruit vs that recruit when the qb’s never actually are on the field at the same time against each other. Give me the guy that can beat osu’s defense for more points than their qb can beat our defense for.. I want that guy and don’t give anything about starts or elite 11. Not dismissing them, just that’s not for me to boast about with osu fan……
I didnt watch the video but can tell you the main difference is that Jadyn is going to the much better school with the much better coach, team, fan base, helmet, and fight song.
But they have mobile toilets.

i honestly thought "jadyn vs air" was going to be a cute way of saying throwing drills with no defenders...
Jayden is definitely more smooth both in footwork and motion. He’s super fluid and comfortable, but a hair too comfortable. He brings the ball down before his release rather than keeping the ball high.
Air threw tight balls pretty consistently and has a ridiculously quick release, but something is off with his release. It’s not quite a hitch and it’s not that weird lefty Tebow thing either. His footwork is off too. It looks like he’s trying to count his steps or think about his steps rather than going through it naturally.
Jayden is more polished for sure, but Air isn’t a slouch. Something’s just off with his mechanics
Rewatched it after seeing your critique. Not sure which is better according to QB experts, but Air seems to drags his back leg forward the deeper the throw to where his feet are almost parallel by the end of the throw. On the other hand, Jadyn’s back foot stays back more and twists like a batter swinging or a pitcher pushing off before coming less forward.
Both look “great” in the drill, so other than observing mechanics without knowing what is the preferred motion—I thought Air’s had slightly more accuracy in intermediate to short throws but less on deep throws. I thought Jadyn’s deep ball looked. Enter—but I also thought the coach’s attacked him harder with the bags than they did Air. They slapped the air with Air, pun intended, but looked to really make Jadyn uncomfortable on his throws🤷🏻♂️.
I will trust the coaches, and hope they keep adding more studs to the QB room in the consecutive future classes (25, etc.) a la every elite team in their prime dominance (USC, Bama, UGA, Clemson). Texas may have the current best QB room in college—let’s change that.
Noland has a very compact and quick release. Davis has much longer windup, and the windup drops, I would imagine they'll work on this here.
I know nothing about the mechanics of being a QB other than that stupid Dax Prescott video... but Davis seemed to have happy feet and throw a little "looser" but not in a good way... took the zip off his throws that i could tell. I didnt watch the entire thing, those are my uninformed comments. Also, it seems to take a while for Davis to get the ball out... not compact quick motion.. heavier movements?
That said - it wont matter because its gona rain a bit and we know osu qbs can't play outdoors.
They both throw great balls.
The better QB will be the one who learns to read defenses and make good decisions more quickly.
Air looked a lot sharper. More zip on his passes, more accurate, and compact throwing dart like motion. Footwork seemed more crisp or deliberate. Jadyn has a looping/whipping throwing motion that's a bit side armed and has less zip on the ball. Things change in the game and it's one drill, but based on this sample Air is the clear winner and it wasn't too close.

Wow, I just noticed Jaydn is no longer a 5 star, 247 composite. 4 star, 35 overall. Jaydn at one time was the number 1 overall player, I believe.
Still a 5 star on 247 personal rankings though.
Air is an arm thrower. When I see a QB like that, I feel he’ll be limited in terms of arm strength and the deep ball.
I much prefer the fluid motion of Jayden. Will likely be better overall arm talent.
It isn't bad for Michigan if Davis drops in the rankings. He doesn't have a big arm, isn't that athletic, camp setting isn't going to favor him. Davis rankings drop a little and maybe it makes Michigan even more appealing to the hometown kid in next years class.
That qualifies as the silver lining way of looking at it....

This video is great to show off the QB's pure mechanics. They both throw excellent balls. The real test though is when they have one or multiple mean 240+ lb dudes coming at them with aspirations of removing their body from the ball. Michigan's guys seem to be better at that lately.
E11 always means next to nothing but ypu can see Davis needs to work on his delivery. He has good placement but he drops and winds that ball below his waist and then around to make the throw. People usually learn that at a young age when they have to make throws their body strength and mechanics can't make yet. Then it becomes habit and it's hard to break it. Yet, most QBs have awful mechanics out of HS so it's not alarming.
Both looked solid. Air has a nice release and motion already.
I think it’s a situation where both schools feel like they won. Davis fits with what we do and Noland fits well with OSU. I didn’t realize Noland was left handed. I’m not going to start that argument on left handed QB’s, but betting on someone to be the exception is a good way to get fired because they usually turn out to be the rule, not the exception.
