This notion is somewhat true.   There's an inherent esprit de corps between fellow Yoopers and a shared pride when someone from the motherland goes on to do great things.   As a native Yooper, I'll admit that at times I've rooted for the likes of Izzo and Mariucci since I know how damn hard they worked to obtain lofty coaching positions from humble beginnings shaped by growing up in a hardscrabble upper Midwest town.

My disdain for Izzo has grown in the last decade after watching his courtside antics and woe-is-me press conferences for many years.  I also am cynical about how a handful of Spartan athletes somehow extracted themselves from tenuous situations under his tenure.    But I still hold a grudging respect for how he got to where he is today.

Luckily all players are not expected to be at risk, as their noses and mouths are far enough above Izzo's the virus particles cannot reach. Because he's short.

crap.  the last thing i want is for tom izzo to fulfill his lifelong dream of, not just figurative martyrhood, but ACTUAL martyrhood.

His surprise that he got it after following all the guidelines including masking up, reinforces two points that I believe in:

(1) Many people feel that they are protecting themselves by wearing a mask.

(2) That mask are highly effective at stopping the spread of Covid.

i think mask are helpful at stopping the spread, but maybe only 50%. They help and should be worn, but they are not going to keep you safe. Social distance is the best defense.

Data from Texas indicates this may be correct. That state has had a mask mandate, state-wide, for more than a month. However, it's daily case numbers are about where they were in mid-August, which is the most of any state in the country.

Now, that assumes people are actually wearing the masks as much as they say they do, which is highly dubious. But at the very least, it's a data point.

Wrong, all these states might have a mandate, but do people follow the mandate, fuck no. Not when you have a president who constantly makes it looks like a point of weakness and when you have some governors not really encourage it.

It works everywhere else in the world, but not here right!!  It is amazing, fewer Americans are taking and majoring in science, but with covid, everyone is a fucking medical expert!!!  I have said it before, the US has 5% of the world's population, but 20% of the deaths.

North Dakota did not have a mask mandate until last night.

Object reality says COVID is bad with masks, much worse without.

I really wonder how basketball practices are going to go with COVID, not just college, but HS. Maybe there have been innovations in gym ventilation since my day. My HS gym had doors all around that opened directly to outside. The other HS in my town had a gym that was no outside walls.

There are at least five pieces of evidence that masks are effective at:  (i) reducing spread, and (ii) reducing symptoms/sickness.

This leads to the inference that:  the more viral load you get, the more sick you get.  So, the less viral load you get (i.e. by everyone wearing masks) the less sick you get.

This article from July gives details: https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2020/07/418181/one-more-reason-wear-mask-youll-get-less-sick-covid-19

The four pieces of evidence come from:  (i) two different cruise ships, (ii) two different meat packing plants, and (iii) experiments with hamsters (sorry dudes!).

The evidence suggests that if everyone masks up, people still get covid, but the % of asymptomatic cases is really high (greater than 80% compared to typically 30-40% asymptomatic in the general population), so many fewer need to even go to the hospital or ICU.

indoors in poorly ventilated areas seems like the places to avoid.  Mask wearing is supposed to help stop random community spread, I think its doing that.  Its just that so much of our populace goes home and just relaxes, invites friends over and have parties, weddings and just HAVE to go out to eat or the bar occassionally.

The elections over, so is corona guys are super fun.

MSU is recruiting just fine too. In 21 they have a top 15 player, and two other top 70 guys - either of which I'd have loved in our class. And in 22, they have the best NBA prospect since Anthony Davis. Granted, I don't think he ends up playing in college but he still committed to them. They also have another top 40 guys committed.
