Imitation the Sincerest Form of Flattery - Bucknuts Ride Williams Down the Stretch

Submitted by smotheringD on September 3rd, 2022 at 11:30 PM

It looks like our 11/26 adversary has realized the value of having an H2-type snot-knocker over the off-season.

Really looking forward to see how team 143 develops this year as we prepare to compete in The Game.

I think ND tired significantly. I like Michigan's chances here-specifically upfront. The BPONE folks will persist-I know, I know it was "just CSU" but Michigan looks like they can bring waves and waves to the front seven-with no drop-off...deeper than the 2-deep. The size, strength and speed of these relentless pursuers was quite the sight to behold. And truthfully, when ND was fresh, Mr. Stroud had some panicky deer-in-the-headlights to his look and play. Michigan's defense is better than NDs-maybe a lot better.

We looked awesome against Minnesota in 2020.  You can’t know much from playing CSU.   ND is a tough first game no matter who you are.  OSU was really good down the stretch.  The outcome of that games was about as bad as we could have hoped for.  OSU won and ND played well enough to be respected.  Here to hoping that ND actually sucks and everyone gives OSU a hard time.

People try their best to boost up our opponents, especially OSU and MSU. OSU did not play well yesterday. Stroud is still rattled easily. Outside WRs do not currently have the same skill set that the two outgoing players did. Too much blitzing on D, probably to cover up deficiencies. Running game was inconsistent and I think Day loves throwing the ball too much.

Looking for silver lining should be reserved for UM and not the other way around. My two cents....

Throughout the history of the rivalry, Michigan and Ohio State have never gone very long without looking like each other.

You build your team to beat your rival.  We've done it, they've done it.

Meh.  They are now being annointed as tough and physical. The osu media slob fest found a new narrative.

They beat down an overrated ND team with no offense that led to their defense getting tired down the stretch.

Both their O-line and D-line remain average.  We should beat them.

Bama and UGA remain far superior to them.

Georgia looked like a farm team for an nfl team. Not just any farm team, a farm team of all stars rehabbing a sprained pinky. We aren’t beating, or even competing with a team like that with a 1 trick pony offense and a qb who can’t extend plays. Probably wouldn’t beat them if Tom Brady had another year of eligibility.

I think both teams are going to ride a wave of overrated-ness from this game because it was close. What I saw was OSU again struggle to move the ball on a talented team that sat in zone and a Notre Dame team without an offense.

I'll bet ND is an 8-9 win team and OSU didn't magically fix all of their defensive issues in a single offseason

ND QB was out of pocket the minute he sensed pressure. He took a good shot early in the game with a great completion. May be that got to him. If he doesn't improve that, I give serious edge to Clemson and USC. Clemson still had a great defense last year. USC, with the new coach, is going to outscore ND and not sure if the QB can keep up, unless he improves significantly. He still might, but he might need a year.

The fact that Day couldn't even maintain the offense everyone claims he built is somewhat stunning.  Benching Henderson for Williams, who is just a guy, and then pretending that is all part of some well executed plan to get tough is a large red flag.

Who's to say, but if Day thinks that becoming more Harbaugh than Harbaugh is the way to beat Michigan, I predict that bodes well for us in Columbus.

I think OSU was just taking what the defense was giving them. ND usually only rushed three or four guys with an occasional blitzer and OSU kept trying to throw with seven guys in coverage before they finally gave up and started running the ball.
I don’t think he benched Henderson for Williams, because Henderson was in on the final drive. It looked more like a rotation. They only have three healthy scholarship backs available this year, so they have to rotate.

It’s really hard to compare teams when they’ve only played one game and we played against a really bad team. What we saw was encouraging, but CSU isn’t a great measuring stick and as bad as they are, they are still better than our next two opponents. Hawaii and UConn could both be winless against FBS schools this year.
By the time we play them, OSU won’t be the same team we saw last night, but we won’t be the same either. I expect JJ to be our starter, especially if he’s turned loose next Saturday and leads the team to 50 points in the first half. I’m not sure Harbaugh will allow them to run it up too much, but our backups should be able to blow out Hawaii.

Henderson got a thigh smashed into his head on the play where he got a penalty for chop block and was slow to get up.  I think they initially were keeping him out for that.  But the replacement guy was motoring, so no need to put him back in anyway.

Book it: this is the start of the demise of Day. He and his coordinators can recruit like no other, but development and strategy might be at the ceiling (except for Hartline). On paper, his teams seem the like one of the best osu teams, but they don’t look imposing. Urbans teams were damn near invincible and Days seem winnable.

This. They rely heavily on yard after. Out athleting other teams is their mantra. The formula still is keep the chains moving, pressure Stroud, keep the plays in front of you on defense, and outlast 2-3 quarters. Then the game is on. Not many teams on their schedule can do that. PSU? If they had a good OL, I would say PSU will give them trouble. MSU? Their secondary was a mess and we will see how much they improve. UM has the players and scheme to match them.

OSU, even if they get to playoff, will get embarrassed. There is a reason Meyer won so much over his career -- Power running. You need it whether it is SEC or B1G. Day is way too much reliant on QB.

Williams made a couple of nice plays to ignite the run, one of them was a 20+ yard reception. And then OSU just "fed the hot hand".  It's a common practice in sports and not really about imitating Michigan.

They way we stack up 3rd and 2s and 4th and 1s I hope we find our next Haskins. There were some concerning break downs from the oline today and our backs dont seem like they can shed 700 pounds of lineman like Haskins could .

We were missing our LT and lost his backup very early on, resulting in our LG playing tackle and our backup backup LG slotting on. Our RT was getting his first real start. Not saying you are wrong but this was a good showing from the OL overall and I think we will see improvement throughout the season. Check back in 3 weeks

Well either ND is amazing defying recent history and actually one of the best 5 teams in the country or both of these squads are overrated. I didn’t see Death Star football being played by either team, so I’m guessing it’s not the former.

But don't work, stroud is the best we've ever seen. Whatever. ND looked tired and worn down. Our ol is better and OSU won't just run through gaps on us.  That says, myan looked like a shitty hassan... And better than Henderson

Notice ND followed Michigan's lead and took away the deep ball for most of the game.  OSU isn't as fearsome if you have the ability to keep their offense in front of you.  Unfortunately, they ran out of gas and had to change things up (that didn't work either.)

Ohio State has the stars and talent to win every game this season. I believe it will be their coaching that limits them from actually doing that. It took them 3 quarters last night to realize they could just run the ball. I still saw a lot of confusion in their LBs and this team isn’t any tougher from a physical standpoint than last year. With the offensive talent they have, Urban Meyer would have won that game last night by 3 touchdowns and the game would have been pretty lopsided all game. Time will tell and I do expect the defense to get better throughout the season, but there are a lot more questions for OSU leaving this game than when the game started.

anOSU's defense looked much better than last year.

But their offense looked nowhere near as good.

Passing looked surprisingly tame.  Running looked pretty good.

However, it is just game 1.

Running the ball with a stud RB who can grind out yards is not a michigan/Harbaugh invention.

did our fanbase just get dumber after beating OSU?

1  we beat them once in 10 years   Once   We haven’t been there, but we should act like we have been

2  Ryan day is an asshole, but he didn’t start at 3rd   He was the architect of OSUs offense while Meyer was coach   He recruits talent.  None of this is a surprise

3. No.  They aren’t imitating us.  What a dumb take.
