If you could take one non-QB off any CFB team in the country and add to Michigan this year...who would it be?

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Again in my effort to plant one tree a day during the dog days of OT season... Here's another hypothetical.

One I like much better than the if you could take a player from OSU/MSU someone asks every year. Fuck OSU/MSU.

If you could take one non-QB off any CFB team in the country and add to Michigan this year...who would it be? I say no QB so it's not a million Watson from Clemson posts.

Whoever the best mlb in the country is would be my first choice.  An elite Lt would be my second choice.  Fournette is obviously unreal but a great oline can make an average rb look great/  An average OL can make an entire offense mediocre.

If I had to take one player I think a pass rusher is the most impactful single position outside of QB.  Offensive players need other players to help them, so I think adding a single player would be more impactful on defense, outside of the QB position.  So, I'd probably take Myles Garrett.  You could make a case for Malik McDowell too.

I agree with the offensive choices so far in Fournette or McCaffrey, but I think defense is a more reliable winner of games than offense.

Adding a quality linebacker like Maybin, McMillan, or Foster would be great too because of our roster.  But, my answer would probably be Garrett.

the crowd that says take the best LB.

Fournette and McCaffrey are great offensive weapons.  But assuming QB works out, M will have plenty of offensive weapons.

I would shore up the potential weak link on a D that is superb to very good everywhere besides LB before taking an offensive star.

The formula for M making the playoff this year is not to have a dazzling offense, but instead to have a top three D with a good offense.

And to make the playoff the M D has to stop OSU's offense.  So take the best LB in the nation.

Stellar defense will always make up for an offense's shortcomings. We had some talent on offense in '97, but it was the defense that bailed them out when they had trouble moving the ball.

I like this question. When I clicked the link the first name I thought of was Zach Cunningham, LB, Vanderbilt. A very very speedy LB with size 6-4, 230. He would be a perfect fit for this system, more so than some other run stuffing LB's that lack his speed or pass rush.

Then I thought of Tim Williams, LB, Alabama. Again size at 6-4, 230 but this guy is a pass rusher more than anything. He is nasty coming off the edge. Kind of more a BUCK but can still do over LB things.

Check out the spin move at :31 seconds at Sparty!!! WOW!

But after ready all the post above I have to go with Leonard Fournette. Tempting option to go with Cam Robinson (who actually had a down year as a SO.) but I can't pass on everything I'd get with Fournette. So much for playing over the top of Chesson.

Myles Garrett. Garrett lined up next to Gary, Wormley and Glasgow would just be unfair. With Mone, Hurst and Charlton all rotating in off the bench. In these type of scenarios I always prefer to strengthen a strength as opposed to trying to patch up a weaker position.

but I'd love Malik Jefferson. But I'd probably lean towards Anthony Walker, the MLB from Northwestern. Walker was a HUGE reason they had a top flight defense and were able to win 10 games.

is the safer choice but if you want entertainment and fun thrown in, you have to go with Christian McCaffery. I was at the Rose Bowl game vs Iowa. Christian had 368 total yards. He made Iowa look silly.

Dan Feeney.

QB's are off the board.
Fournette is a duh.

idc who the running back is, I mean yes I've love the best, but if there is daylight that even I can run through, who cares man!

Nimble guard who can definitely pull(or play center? allowing cole to stay LT).

Had to take a path less travelled.

I agree a nice MIKE or OLB or everyone wants an amazing LT but nm Pat Eflein because I'd feel bad for Indiana and EFF OSU.

That's one way to go, but rember if you're going to go that route, you need to pick the best overall combination.  What position would hurt OSU the most AND help Michigan the most?

Might not necessarily be the "best" player on the OSU squad.  In addition, if you're looking for the "hurt OSU" angle, you'd also have to consider depth of position & drop-off.  Picking the best player might only result in a small dropoff if that position has a lot of depth.  But if you pick the 3rd or 4th best player on th squad, maybe it's a big dropoff after that at a certain position.

It's kind of like the spring game when we choose teams.  Just because an athlete is picked first, it doesn't mean that they're the best player on the team overall--it just may mean that he is the best player at a position where there is a big fall-off between starter and backups.

we need offense, but will list a couple for each:

Offense:

1. McCaffrey, cause catching balls out of the backfield like he does would be huge

2. Zach Banner, cause I wanted him like crazy 3 years ago.

That said, Fournette is probably the smart pick.

Defense:

1. Anthony Walker - This guy is a spread killer, and together with Peppers/McCray, we would be even more destructive than we already are, and he would give us the best shot against OSU, IMO.

2. Jabrill Peppers- This guy is a total stud, and he would...HEY! We already have him!!! :) :)

J.T. Barrett. I know, you're thinking "he said non-qb". I'll stand with my answer given his passing stats. I'd take him on Michigan. Not so much to play a position, but to take away from OSU.

I'd take Cam Robinson or another great LT. LB worries me but it is mitigated our DL and secondary and I don't think they'll be worse than eh. Newsome getting worked by Carlo Kemp scares the bejeebus out of me. If we can get that spot shored up I don't see any glaring weakness on this roster which is pretty amazing.
