Harbaugh overtakes Meyer in Twitter Followers

Submitted by EastCoast Esq. on

Since we are in the slowest of slow periods (Favorite Sound? Seriously?), this qualifies as news.

Coach Harbaugh has officially overtaken Coach Bucknut in Twitter followers. Hopefully some of those followers are recruits that think it would be pretty cool to play for such an enthusiastic guy.

Well, it happened. @CoachJim4UM with 267.8K followers, @OSUCoachMeyer with 262.7K followers. That didn't take long.

Yep. JH is number 1. Saban doesn't have one. I thought that Richt was up there. Pelini was up there too but I'm not sure if he qualifies anymore that he isn't in the fbs.

Just as a caution to anyone who would embark on this, you can learn some odd things about your own followers while using the Twitter analytics functionality, if you have it on your account. Other than that, I am sure this one will show up late June / early July at the rate OT season is going - it eventually spills over into the diary section anyway.

I think he is referring to the obsession over things as meaningless as Twitter followers? Which I agree with (I would not have posted this during the season).

I don't think any self-respecting Michigan fan would be down on the hire.

EDIT: Accidentally upvoted myself.  First time I have done that.

If you think that twitter will help Michigan win a single goddamned game you're fooling yourself.

If you for some reason think that having a compelling stream of tweets is crucial to winning football, then consider this: It's universally acknowledged here that Urban Meyer's twitters are boring, generic, uninspiring, uninteresting, and essentially not worth the time to read. I've never read any of his tweets, but I'll take everybody's word for it.

Amazingly enough, that hasn't prevented Ohio State from going 38-3, winning a national title, and having one highly-ranked recruiting class after another. Maybe that's because twitter is entirely incidental to the task of assembling an elite football program.

I have no doubt Harbaugh will also assemble an elite program, but it won't be because of his tweets. It will because he's assembled a great staff, identifies the best talent for what he wants to do at Michigan, develops that talent in practice and on game day, and outcoaches his opponents on Saturdays.

If Harbaugh's twitter stream is entertaining and makes him seem accessible, approachable, etc., and he interests some new recruits down the line, that's cool.  I'll take it.

Frankly, I'm so glad to have a winning attitude back at Michigan that this thread could be about him wearing khakis and I'd be like, "HELLZ YEAH!"

Jim Harbaugh's twitter is genuine and cool. This past Sunday he tweeted several tweets with pictures of the "Fabulous Moms of Michigan Football."

Also, throughout the past few days he's been tweeting the best grades of the semester for the team which tells me he likes to make EVERYTHING a competition.

What's the conversion rate of Twitter followers to spring game attendance? I heard it was roughly equivalent to the conversion rate between Schrute Bucks and Stanley Nickels.

I looked yesterday, and Harbaugh had 157k. Somehow he's gained 12,000 followers in the last day.

Phew! Thank god. I didn't know what I was going to do with myself if he couldn't overtake Meyer in the number of Twitter followers. What an injustice that would've been.
