Greg Roman chatter

It's rivals, so take it with a bag of salt.

Sources informed TheWolverine.com that Roman was in for the Indiana game and has been in touch with Harbaugh recently, especially when OC Tim Drevno was interviewing for head coaching jobs at San Jose St. and elsewhere. As we first reported Saturday, it wouldn't surprise at all if he joined the staff soon, though Baltimore and other NFL teams are reportedly showing interest in him.

Erik 'Soup' Campbell  played on the same teams with JH and Wilscher (Cass Tech coach).

He did a great job with receivers here from 1995 - 2007 (Rich Rod should have kept him). He then went to Iowa and did a great job with with  their receivers. JH gave him a staff job last year but then he was hired to coach WRs at U Conn... who now have a new coach coming in.

He's the perfect guy for what we need :a dedicated WR coach with a great background of success; team mate of JH; bleeds Blue; dynamite instate recruiter (even when he was with Iowa). Soup's On!

He's too similar to Drevno. So yes, it makes sense when Drevno was interviewing. But they need a passing game innovator. Not an OL run game guy. Plus his stock has dropped.

How about Sunny Cumbie for a name out of left field.

Because that would be a step up for him.

Texas OC makes HC money. He's Co-OC at TCU.

WR coach at Michigan is not a step up from Co-OC at TCU and it's likely not more money either.

If you were talking about to replace Drevno, then it would make sense...kind of.

I'm not surprised Fisch didn't get promoted to co-OC. Harbaugh seems like the kind of guy who wants his coaching staff to go elsewhere and get better jobs than just promote from within (unless someone like Drevno left) to keep them around.

That said, I am sad to see him leave. Wish him the best of luck!

Strong is probably going to mostly bring in his own staff and Taggert didn't take him to Oregon. I don't think our options of finding a new WR coach are too limited. There should be a lot of potential candidates we could poach.

Promoting Fisch to co-OC would have also meant demoting Drevno. In any case, Fisch is the OC at UCLA, still a promotion.

Seems like a strong candidate. Not sure if it is a done deal yet. I am sure an announcement will be coming soon. I think he wanted Drevno's job. That's why I think someone else takes it.

Yeah his last stints were'nt so good. But he still has a TON of NFL experience.

Also, he and Harbaugh together had some pretty great offenses, so maybe the synergy will still be there.

Imagine talking to a recruit. "Hey, have you met Greg? Coach of 5 different NFL teams?"

I think the combination of Harbaugh and Drevno already involved will mitigate any of the negativity about Roman that a lot of fans have. And you cannot underestimate the value of another guy with NFL pedigree on the staff, especially one who's had a ton of experience with OL. This team could use all the OL coaching help it can get.

Roman would seem to be a great hire if he would come.  He's got tons of experience and is well known, and he's coming in to be a position coach and manybe co-OC. most position coaches are not people that most fans have heard of, so that's a good thing i would think.

One other name that no one is talking about is Chip Kelly.  Just throw a lot of money at him to be the WR coach/co-OC.  A lot of money.

I don't think there's room in it for $5 million position coaches. I'm sure we're willing to pay enough to get a good WR coach. I think that's what we need, not a co-DC. I'd be happy to see us get an experienced WR coach like Soup Campbell or a promising young coach.

Ex-player yada yada. Size and speed lacking made him a technique wizard. College awards and getting drafted give him respect. He's also on the younger side so more relatable to recruits. WR focused so drevno becomes true OC which should protect him from leaving for anything below power 5.

And just what experience does he have coaching/teaching?  He was playing in Japan last year...  Jim Harbaugh's staff at Michigan doesn't put coaches with zero experience coaching on the sidelines.  Maybe bring him on as an analyst of some flavor and promote when an opening happens - ala Chris Partridge (an exerienced and successful HS coach that had to prove himself and wait his turn).

Given how Clemson WRs have performed in recent years that'd be a great hire. But would he leave for just a raise? I don't know that he'd even get the Co-OC designation at UM and he's probably wanting to become a full OC in the near future.

Concerned about the razor thin room for error for the OL that comes with running a pro-system like Harbaugh's, and that bringing in an NFL guy tends to result in over-expectation about how college O linemen will perform.  Couple that with several OL recruiting whiffs lately and I'm not enthused.

Positives:

1. Worked with Harbaugh before so both know each other and presumably have a good working relationship - no surprises.

2. Long time assistant - might bolt for a pro job but perhaps at this point he is ready to stay in a place for 5+ years.

3. Brings recent pro experience - one more person on the staff that has actual pro pedigree and can tell recruits that at the UM you'll be receiving the type of training that the NFL expects.

Possible negatives:

1. Depends on his ambitions - if he is still curious about a NFL future - he might leave in a few years.

2. Is he patient? Terminology, expectations and work load - have to be adjusted for the college game. Is he up for that?

Pros:

1. Longtime assistant (not good enough to be HC)

2. Brings recent pro experience of this year (Just dont ask how that ended)

Possible Negatives:

1. Is named Greg.

2. Fired by 7-9 team that played much better offensively after he was fired
