Compendium of Michigan NIL Efforts?

Submitted by dosleches on June 30th, 2022 at 10:07 AM

Is there a list somewhere of all of the NIL efforts various groups have started? I'm only aware of MgoDao. Since Michigan and the AD apparently are unwilling or unable to get recruits paid more directly, I am interested in just giving my money to one of these NIL groups to get recruits paid as directly as possible.

What is the most efficient way to donate my money to a potential Michigan recruit since apparently there are no rules now?

yes and it has been posted here.

also, googling "michigan NIL collectives" will get you your answer, since there are a bunch of news articles about it

Once this gets more sorted out it would be very nice to have a page that links to the various collectives somewhere on here but right now everything is so new we don't know who the best option will be for giving money to and for what reasons so I would hold onto that donation for bit.

For crying out loud, just make it stop! There is NOTHING that Michigan fans can do regarding NIL if the University doesn't want to pay recruits to attend.

Let it play itself out. It's not the end of the world! There is obvious coordination between boosters and college coaches or else the boosters wouldn't know who to directly target. And, Harbaugh's not playing ball. Further, if some collective went backdoor on the program, when the news got out the Athletic Department would probably bail on the recruit.

If tough seasons are forthcoming, then we'll see what the committment to football really is. I'd rather be a transformational 8-9 win team than a transactional 11 win team.

Is there any reason that being a transactional football team is bad? Or is that just you coping with the fact that Michigans administration and culture is backwards/outdated.

Players who have worked their ass off in high school to be a D1 player deserve to get paid. They did the work and have sacrificed so much. Michigan is a good school, who cares. Other schools with academics are fine with NIL.

For being a liberal school, we are quite set in our ways.

There is nothing wrong with being "transactional".  That literally describes nearly every person on earth that has a job or owns a company for profit.  I was a GSE at Michigan Business School (before it was called Ross) and that was transactional as it paid my MAcc tuition and a nice little stipend.

Nervous Bird is also being very black and white.  They are correct that we can't coordinate setting up NIL for a recruit but the school is encouraging NIL opportunities for existing student athletes - which probably extends to commits once they sign their LOI.

It's not bad per se. Its actually looking at the landscape and recognizing that the culture is different. If we don't adapt quickly, we could fall way behind. Schools that are transactional will be winning titles and creating an environment where recruits want to come compete for Natty's, while being  paid their value. We will be going back to square one and playing catch up.

No one want's to feel exploited or become a victim of the old banana in the tail pipe trick. There's a very high profile 5 star QB who wants to stay at home and play in front of his family and the people who love him. Moreover, he has put in the work and has sacrificed his ass off to be in that position. Pay the boy so we can win some Natty's ourselves.

After reading 100s of these posts, I am confused what transactional NIL really means. Is this about paying to come and play? If so, isn't that against what Michigan law allows? Or would allow at the end of this year? Someone said this in one of the 100s of the posts. If what you are saying is against what is allowed or would be allowed, I don't see Michigan doing it. I am not challenging the morality of your statement, but it is what it is. If the law is crap, then it needs to be changed. Is someone working on that? Instead, everyone seems to pile on Harbaugh and UM. Shouldn't we be upset with the law and the ones who make it?

I could be completely wrong about that law as I only relied on what I read here.

You make a great point. I personally love Harbaugh and think he is the coach we need to ride with for as long as he wants to coach. He personifies Michigan football culture and is a proven leader. He's the Bo of our time and I love him.

The term transactional gets thrown around a lot but few people say what it really means. It means yes, in today's landscape, you pay players their marketable value. Although I believe players should be paid, I don't agree that you break the law or cheat. I do believe you have to do everything you can within the law and NCAA rules to stay competitive. It's been a long time since we won the Big Ten and if we don't do something, we risk going back to mediocrity, while our rivals get stronger and further galvanize their dominance.

On the other hand the term transformational is thrown around a lot too but what does that mean? If it means I'm not going to to tell you what I'm going to give you until you sign, that implies some illusory promise that you will earn what your worth but it's not something that can be relied on when your rivals are offering something more reliable. Structuring the agreements are the key, I just think that our message needs to resonate better so recruits know that we respect their worth today, not next year.

Your last line scares me. Being an 8-9 win team is pretty mediocre considering the way non conference schedules are trending. Michigan football would basically be equal to what Iowa football is now. You seem fine with that. Whatever happen to leaders and best?

Michigan can be both transformational and transactional. It isn't such a black and white issue as you seem to make it.

Ugh, I hate platitudes. I'm not trying to attack you but the whole "transformational not transactional" thing is such baloney.  Going to college is "transformational" for almost every student at nearly every college throughout the country.  Its essentially the basic mission for the college system as a whole rather than something Michigan just gets to claim ownership over.

Whether or not a recruit gets NIL money is a completely separate issue from whether or not their experience at their college choice will be "transformational".  How about Michigan just develops it's NIL program to be competitive with its peers and focuses on developing them as men once they're on campus?  Why does it have to be one or the other?

Courtney Morgan, our previous recruiting coordinator, and one who a lot of people on here say is a major reason for our current recruiting woes, is using the same transformational pitch to recruits. He was on Twitter using the term this morning.

Well of course.  If a school isn't willing to partake in the NIL stuff they have no other option than trying to frame it in this way.  One of my college professors used to refer to this sort of thing as "marketing your way out of a math problem."  Unfortunately, it doesn't work.

Because once a player is paid - has the $ in his hands - then the leverage is all his. We all know some players have come to Michigan in the past with no intention of having a "transformational" experience. They just wanted to ball & go pro at their earliest opportunity.

Some had a revelation & realized what was being offered at Michigan once they arrived, and some others never did. I think Michigan's reticence to jump into bidding wars with both feet is an attempt to make sure they don't end up with too many of the latter.

I predict (granted I may well be overly optimistic) is that Michigan will figure out what works for the school & the players, not merely for the players. It likely won't be in time for the '23 class tho 🤷‍♂️

Any players who sign on in '23 want to be at Michigan, not simply the highest bidder.

If we're entering a college football environment where all schools pay recruits, and Michigan is the only one not playing ball, we'll be lucky to get 8 wins after several recruiting cycles. Yes, it's transactional, and yes it makes the sport objectively worse. But Michigan can't just pretend nothing has changed.

Being a college football player has become a high-paying job, so why would players go to the one school that won't pay them?

Probably to tweet directly at the recruit and ask for banking information.

Frankly I am not even particularly disappointed that Michigan isn't getting all wrapped up in NIL right now.  A lot of the players who are getting money up front won't even pan out and these schools will be stuck with $6 million dollar Derrick Greens.  A lot of the really good players who aren't happy for whatever reason will just transfer to another bidder.  Nobody knows how this is going to play out and I don't think a conservative approach to begin is that bad of idea, to be honest.

I think people are getting ahead of themselves.  I am more excited about our receiver room in 2022 than I am concerned about NIL and 2023 recruiting.

There may be one advantage to the current trends playing out. If the self-imposed "transformational" approach to NIL turns into a complete debacle (coming after a B1G Championship and playoff appearance season, no less), the AD has the feedback it needs to make a rapid adjustment. We can survive one poor recruiting class. The danger long term is a slow drip of meh classes while a flawed approach to recruiting gets entrenched.

It's really an insulting policy decision by Michigan. They will pony up millions for the coaches they want -- which is FINE, don't misunderstand what I am saying -- but then when it comes to the players, they won't do everything in their power to make NIL work for them.

The optics and implications suck. They clearly are disrespecting the players -- by not doing everything they can to make NIL work for them -- and the fans -- by just assuming we will attend / watch whatever the product on the field.

Facilitating compensation (through NIL "deals in waiting" if M doesn't want to go the direct "signing bonus" route) is not only being utilized to the fullest by many programs, it is absolutely above-board if structured appropriately (depending on state law, I guess?).

What's next? Michigan isn't going to allow its players to lift weights? We don't need that advantage, we're Michigan fergodsakes!! (OK, OK, /s on this last one, I suppose....)

I am new to MGoBlog, but have been working on the fundamental problem and opportunity for Michigan NIL.  We announced a program a few months ago with members of the football team to address this fundamental problem... but have been delayed by the change in the fiat payment ecosystem.

https://www.freep.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2022/03/31/nft-michigan-football-nil-blockpack/7225271001/

We are going live shortly.

Michigan is lagging in the first year of the NIL-era.  However, Michigan has the dominant football community and will be the clear winner in the NIL-era if done right.  Our program has a mission to empower Michigan football to win a national championship... seriously.  Michigan will win the NIL-era.

I don't want to hijack this thread or this community with something that sounds like a biased commercial but I am happy to answer questions on this thread or a new thread if there is interest in learning how to make this happen.

If you decide to come to our site and register, use this link so we can see you came from the MGoBlog community: https://www.blockpack.io/register/HTIKII
