Coaching updates from Isaiah Hole

Looks like Al Washington to OSU is just a rumor, Don Bown is 50-50 to leave, Mattison is weighing retiring, and no information on whether Pep will be Drevno'd.

If 3 of our defensive coaches (Brown, especially) left after the Dax Hill decision, no one should ever have the right to criticize player transfers/players wanting compensation.

If Don Brown were to leave, would everyone be able to swallow their pride and hire a Tressel, Mike Tressel that is from MSU? We'd easily be able to pay him more and they had a better defense than us, coupled with a worse offense.

I don't agree with hiring Tressel.  But I do think there are other excellent D Coordinators to be had in the event Brown leaves. The last four games of 2018 got me thinking people have figured out Browns D.  You could see the big plays starting with Rutgers and continued right through the Florida game.  Let me make this clear, I hope Brown stays, I just hope whatever cracks in the armor that have developed, get fixed in 2019.

I think that Harbaugh brought all his coaches in because he wanted them and should be kept as long as Harbaugh stays. Kind of like they are all in it together and should have the chance to live or die with him.

But then again what do i know?

Coaches like Harbaugh understand that when you win other programs are going to want to get ppl from your staff. Look at the turnover at places like Bama & OSU. It comes with the territory, but fans become attached to the names. He hired DB so if a change needs to be made, have confidence he will grab another elite defensive mind.

I wonder if Brown is suffering a bad case of whiplash... up until kickoff against OSU he and his moustache were worshipped more reverently than Harbaugh, and just a month later it seems half the fan base wants to run him out of town and the other half would just shrug if he took another job.

100% agree. Brown has been good in 90%+ of Michigan's games. I have hope that he can identify weaknesses and make the necessary changes moving forward. Ohio State and the Saquon Barkley version of PSU thrashed us. True. But in modern football, great offense will beat great defense -- and sometimes it will even shred it. Alabama's great defenses still got themselves into shootouts with Clemson and Georgia. Their offense saved them in a couple of those Championships. That is what Michigan needs. An offense that can save the defense when they're up against a juggernaut. What we don't need, is a wild goose chase for a mythucal DC who can hold elite offenses under 20 points per game. That guy doesn't exist -- not even Nick Saban. I hope Don Brown stays as long as possible and evolves and adapts along the way.

Brown's record is pretty damn good overall, but I don't think he's beyond criticism any more than Harbaugh is.

One of the problems the MGoBlogosphere creates for itself is its compulsion to absolutely deify anybody who has some measure of success, which is then matched by an equally unhinged need to castigate and revile the very same person when they (inevitably) fall short.

If MGoBlog were an individual, the clinical assessment would be extreme bi-polar, with pronounced and repeated swings between wild-eyed mania and then suicidal soul-sucking depression, and back again.

Getting blown out by OSU is the ONE THING most Michigan fans will absolutely not tolerate.  You can lose to OSU (all the damn time apparently), and you can get blown out by another really good team (PSU 2017), but you cannot shit the bed against OSU.

People really loved Durkin until The Game in 2015.

If Brown stays, and I hope he does, dude needs to take a long look in the mirror and make some changes.  Because if OSU beats us in similar fashion this November, someone is going to light his mustache on fire before he makes it to the locker room.

We don't know if any other DC anywhere could have done better with our injury hobbled defense, players leaving for NFL (which is a growing trend and not just at Michigan) and OSU suddenly coming to life.  Would hate like HELL to lose Don Brown and hope he is not going anywhere.

There are concerns that need to be addressed, and they will.  I don't worry about the "other people have figured him out" line of reasoning as late in the season, teams do figure out other teams and the talent differential becomes more of a factor.  That's why we end up with Alabama vs. Clemson.. again.

Has anyone commented on why Brown wants to leave?

Does he feel unappreciated by the staff after the major blowouts? Feel like his style is being hamstrung in the organization? It’s understandable the fan base would be upset with how badly the defense caved in the last two games. What isn’t anticipated is why Brown would take his ball and go home after a lot of success but back to back season ending fallouts.

I wonder if Harbaugh is more willing to part with Brown after those than Pep. That would make the most sense.

Because he's 63 (or around there) and probably realizes the window to run his own program again is closing. If he truly wants that shot then that's why.

Plus, he's an east coast guy so it could be a lot of other non-football reasons too. I'm a east coast guy living in Florida and while I love it down here there is that 'pull' of going back home that is appealing. Until I see snow then it goes away.

From what I have read this defense isn't controlled by anyone but Brown, the offense is what is hamstrung (by Harbaugh).

I'd imagine Partridge, Washington and Bush Sr. are all in line for promotions if we do have the departures of Brown and/or Mattison. Personally, I think Mattison would be a bigger loss than Brown. Plenty of guys who can run a good defense (I think Partridge is on that track but no idea if he's ready to make that jump), but I don't see many DL coaches on Mattison's level - Larry Johnson is the only name that comes to my mind and sadly I don't think we can poach him.

Big fan of Don Brown but losing a great DL coach when that is arguably our weakest link (proven talent and depth-wise as we sit in January 2019 anyway) would be a huge blow. I hope we can get at least one more year of Mattison.

It is difficult for even knowledgeable fans to know the whole story of the possibilities here. Clearly Bush Sr. knows a thing or two about defense...is he otherwise qualified to be a DC??? It would not seem to be a bad thing to have a DC with strong and direct connections to SEC country :)

No, I just don't see him making the leap from defensive analyst straight to DC. He needs to be a position coach first. Bush already got passed up by Partridge for the safety position job last year. I'd bet Partridge would be the internal choice (if that was the route taken) as far as a potential DC opening is concerned.

But none of us truly know what will happen. I do know this, Harbaugh seems to have a knack for finding great assistant coaches. Yes, I know the hate for Pep (but again, this is Harbaugh's offense and Pep does NOT call the plays) but he's done pretty well with his assistants here; Partridge, Brown, Zordich, Warriner, Sherrone Moore and Al Washington recently. It's his lack of willingness to let guys go soon enough that is the issue most seem to take with Harbaugh.
