(CC) Michigan Declines Comment on Harbaugh Offer Reports
Nothing too big here. Jim Hackett won't comment on the coaching search until it is complete so he won't confirm or deny the rumor of a large offer being made to Harbaugh.

no denial is an admission

True. I have yet to hear Kate Upton deny that she had sex with me.
December 18th, 2014 at 8:10 AM ^
but then again you might have to offer $49 million.
December 18th, 2014 at 8:59 AM ^
I decline to comment.
Hey, she may have paid me. It was late and we were both drunk. Who remembers?
Oops, I've said too much already.

this is a no comment as to whether an offer has been made, which is a non-denial denial; or in more positive terms, an indication that an offer is on the table which will be commented on at a later time.
The point of the offer being made public by the way, is Michigan firing off the greatest salvo in the search for its top leader and best in the game. This is the university saying we want you under no uncertain terms and now the whole world knows and is watching. You are accountable for whatever decision you make based on this.
This is where Harbaugh has to challenge his professional goals with his love of school and the memory of Bo and what that means to him. There is no sourcing or indiderish stuff on this kind of decision. The man has to make up his mind. And when he says he's no longer interested this offer will be like a puff of smoke, gone forever, and the magical mystery tour will move on without him, and smug NFL pundits will say and report, they knew it all along. Only we will know differently, as we do now.

we'll get to hear Harbaugh answer a direct question from Brian about this 'rebuffing' at a Michigan presser.
December 18th, 2014 at 7:09 AM ^
All we are going to hear from Harbaugh is: All I am thinking about is winning, my personal professional career is last.
Leaders eat last!
December 18th, 2014 at 7:19 AM ^
Thinking about that "leaders eat last" comment.... Shouldn't leaders eat first to show everybody else how to eat? Maybe I need to reevaluate my eating habits...
December 18th, 2014 at 9:23 AM ^
just figured out the reason that Hoke ultimately did not succeed. He didn't eat on game day. He was supposed to show the team how to eat. How can they win without eating? How can you have your pudding if you don't eat your meat?
December 18th, 2014 at 7:34 AM ^
oil spill / BP network analogy is perfect. The arrogance of the talking heads who dog UM's coaching search as a 'fiasco,' and using other insulting terms is maddening. Hackett is doing it the right way. When Harbaugh signs, I will hope they eat crow.
December 18th, 2014 at 8:45 AM ^
would the NFL as an organization be this defensive about it though. It is not as though college to pro back to college moves are completely unprecedented, two of the biggest names in coaching were like "nah thanks" to the NFL within 2 or 3 years after making the leap and the NFL was like "don't let the door hit your...." What would such misleading reporting gain? In the event he does go there would be some credibility problems with the NFL network and even ESPN. What is to gain? It seems possible that Harbaugh has pissed off quite a few factions of the NFL, and this is less the NFL being protective than it is to paint him as foolish because "why would he ever take that job, I guess he could not hack it with the big boys." The NFL and the NFL media seem invested in this for reasons other than what meets the eye.

is from 4 years ago. Yes, Michigan had just fired RR and Harbaugh took the 49'ers job instead of coming to Michigan. So technically speaking ... their comment may be true, but it's 4 years old.
Harbaugh has now tasted the NFL ... and for his coaching style he is better suited for the college game. Very hard to motivate million dollar players. He's also already proven himself in the NFL (except for a bad referee call - he would have beaten the Ravens and won a Super Bowl). His brother has a Super Bowl ring, but not a National Championship ring ... and that would be the goal if Jim returns home.
Go Blue!

Joe Pequeno of CBS5 in Arizona, also citing unnamed sources, said the offer is $49 million over six years.
$8.2 million would be even north of Sean Payton money, if I am not mistaken, so he's be the highest paid coach anywhere in the US in this scenario.
When this information about an offer started to come out, even unconfirmed, I saw the part of "Barbarians At The Gate" where the initial takeover bid for RJR Nabisco was leaked and then every brokerage ever came out of the woodwork wanting in on the deal, or indeed their own deal. I could see a lot of agents seeing what they could get now even though we're still working on Harbaugh.

Maybe that bitter SOB is trying to sabotage the deal by outing the offer.
December 18th, 2014 at 10:32 AM ^
Wasn't it a CBS station? They have a contract with the NFL, yes?
December 18th, 2014 at 6:53 AM ^
I don't think Harbaugh or Hackett leaked this. I think someone in the Michigan camp --which seems too bigaa probably talked a little too much.
December 18th, 2014 at 9:25 AM ^
My sources say(I know I know) that Hackett went to the 49er's owner first to inform him of his decision to approach Harbaugh, so the leak most likely came from SF management.
December 18th, 2014 at 12:47 PM ^
Yeah I was thinking that it was someone from Michigan's side who leaked it, as in maybe a CMU that was just let go from his position within the AD a few days ago...

Does the 49 million offer include the millions Adidas and B10 network pays the coach?

Probably not. That makes this an even bigger offer! Mind is blown!!
December 18th, 2014 at 8:05 AM ^
most assuredly includes F-150 infomercials and khaki chia pets

I really don't think this comes down to the difference of a couple million dollars, if Oakland is indeed willing to pay that much. Michigan has offered plenty of money here, and it's up to Jim now. It's all about where he wants to go. NFL v. UM.
December 18th, 2014 at 8:22 AM ^
I don't think he wants to come off as being bought by the highest bidder. I think he has higher integrity/ethical standards.

Not only does Harbaugh have to agree to a trade, so do they. If they don't want him in Oakland, for example, they can hold out for a lot in a trade. Until they fire him, he can't even negotiate with another team without their permission.
December 18th, 2014 at 7:19 AM ^
or NY or whatever any other NFL team couldn't have found out what the offer was, right? Not sure why this moves your needle to the red. Your logic doesn't make a whole lot sense.
December 18th, 2014 at 7:38 AM ^
I will agree, my logic is all over the place. I guess I'm just fighting the battle of what my head thinks and what my gut thinks. My head thinks we have a real good chance at landing him based on what Michigan insiders and Brian are saying. My gut is telling me that someone else will have a more appealing offer and he wants to stay in the NFL.
In all fairness, I've seen way worse logic on this board lately than what I said...lol.
December 18th, 2014 at 7:45 AM ^
From what I have heard from my two guys that played with Jim is that he has asked everyone to keep quiet. They still give it a 80-20 chance he comes to Michigan, they have both thought all along it was a done deal. From the way they were talking it sounded like there was a snowballs chance in hell that he goes to Oakland. It sounded to me like it would be between Miami and Michigan. But they indicated that Ross would not go after Harbaugh until it was obvious that he had turned Michigan down. I still think he's coming, and I don't think we will have to wait until the 29th to find out.
December 18th, 2014 at 7:22 AM ^
but I agree with what you're saying. That was kind of my gut reaction, too. To me it isn't that the amount in the offer is out there, but just the fact that the offer is out there. We've been burned publicly before, and I don't want to see that happen, again.
I can't see JH doing anything to disrespect any one team or school, no matter what his ties to it are, but this morning on the way to work Mike and Mike were talking about it on 105.1. I mean everyone has an opinion, and i get the nfl agenda stuff. I just think it could be overwhelming for any coach to be under that big of a spotlight. He might just make a decision sooner just to get everyone off of his back. That decision might be premature and he maybe didn't have enough time to think it through, but he also probably hates reporters asking every day about his job status or where his wife wants to live.
Also, that Grantland article I think brought up a good point about his integrity, how he isn't a quitter, takes the pain, etc... I thought it was a good point in that he may want to get to the "top of the mountain" first, before doing anything else.
Anyways, HARBAUGH!!!

The only ones reporting it's the second offer are Rapaport et. al. No local source had reported dollars less than 48 mil, which is what the offer appears to be. I also tend to believe that Hackett got what seemed to be a late start on the search, knowing full well, let's not really bother Jim while he still is in playoff contention.

...on one hand, the logical thing says no football coach is going to worry about a contract on Thursday when his team plays on Sunday.
Just too short of a turnaround and it's just not the right thing to do.
Sunday night, Monday, Tuesday --- yes. But you don't leave right before a game.
...and with that in mind, I just need to hold out until Monday for Christmas. Which is fine.
Then you have the other side, and that says check MGoBlog every time you get a free moment because, well, "it's happening."
December 18th, 2014 at 7:39 AM ^
One good thing is that he plays on Saturday this week. So maybe he can make a decision on Sunday or Monday.
