Camp update from Sam Webb

Submitted by Bodogblog on

Pretty good stuff, as always.

From his "Inside the Sub" series, this one is free.

If Ulizio has really inserted himself into the mix at RT, that is outstanding news.  Would mean at least another viable contender (and depth) at that spot.  CB race is going to be so interesting, but as a poster in another thread mentioned, Metellus locking down the other safety spot has to be one of the best developments this spring/fall.  Funny I don't think I've heard Glasgow's name once during this camp, after so much visibility in the spring.

In the comments there's a minor panic about a Hurst injury, but it seems to have been talked down.

Sam nicely implied the o line is getting abused by mentioning how frequently the qbs are getting flushed. I know we have a good d line but so does Florida, osu, and most of the top teams we play. It's worrying and could derail the season.

This worry has been the reality since the offseason began. We lost three guys from a mediocre line and the guys behind them are either extremely young or couldn't earn a starting job over guys who were, at best, average. I believe the young guys are going to turn into a good line, but it doesn't necessarily happen yet.

Hopefully it happens by OSU. This needs to be the year they beat that evil empire and put the fear of Michigan ruining their whole season back into their minds. OSU had their young line playing pretty well by the end of the year last year, so I see no reason why Harbaugh, Drevno, and Frey can't pull it off.

The OL is likely going to be below-average this year again. The likelihood is almost overwhelming. We'll have to answer that with a quick-pass, 4WR set system a lot of the time and that's exactly what I hear we're doing. We'll see. I just don't expect our ability to run the ball and protect the QB against top-level front 7s to be better than it has been in what feels like a decade.

Ulizio? Wow. Great news! I was concerned about RT but now my outlook on the offensive line for the Michigan Wolverines has improved!

Glasgow got some time with the 1's recently because the coaches wanted to give him more reps because they felt really good about the other two.

Agreed. That's why I was super happy to see collapsible comments as one of the new site features we are getting: "This is a feature we demanded that we’re really excited about. If you don’t want to read the 40 replies about turtles to a comment you can quickly collapse it and move to the next thread."

somewitty you might want to quit drinking and go to bed.  You are losing points at a record pace and Ulizio is a third year player in the system with tons of upside.

I for one was stoked when he first signed, because he is a blue collar type player who is going to compete and bust his butt.  Sounds like his hard work is paying dividends for both himself and the team.

Laying aside somewittyname's run at Mr. Yost's neg record (still a ways to go, next time try it in a thread where big news is broken) the Ulizio news is inscrutable at best. The report didn't say that he has "inserted" himself into the competition, just that he was getting snaps with the 1s. Now, it's POSSIBLE that this means that Ulizio is blowing up into a starting-level player. It's not impossible, and we've seen surprise guys like Graham Glasgow (utterly ironic that his emergence seemed like the big sign that the 2013 OL was struggling, and he turned out to be the one guy that had it together) emerge and become quality linemen. But it is more likely that neither JBB nor Runyan are getting it done, and they're scrambling a bit to shore up the spot. We know enough about JBB to know that it's a real possibility. Hard to overstate what a blow losing Wilson was. I think he'd be solidified out there right now.

Wow!  Nice work somewittyname.  I woke up this morning to your shitstorm and can see that you have amassed over 3,400 negs and counting at this point.  Probably closer to 3,500 after considering some of the upvotes you have also received.  This may be like Ripken's 2,632 or Gehrig's 56 in terms of difficulty in breaking.  Congrats!

We know very little about JBB. He played one half against Wisconsin and was OK, then played poorly against Rutgers. That is almost nothing to go on. There is nothing you know about the situation that could lead you to conclude Ulizio getting snaps with the 1's means JBB and Runyan aren't performing. That could be the case, or it could be that they've both improved and Ulizio has improved more. You don't know. On the other hand, it's reasonable to argue a third player getting reps at the RT position adds another contender and helps depth. Because in either scenario, a third guy is better than not having a third guy. It also says that third guy is ahead of Filiaga and Steuber (and Honingford), which isn't much, but many on this board had those fairly highly rated recruits penciled in as the starter this year.

I hate to be that guy but damn. It's getting really tough to trust RB ratings. Was Barkley a 5*? It would be nice to know that at least 1 out of 5 of the RBs that garner 5*s actually lives up.

Seems like the rating system is pretty reliable % wise for DL, OL, LBs but RB & WR are spotty at best. QBs seem like better than 50/50 but still some big misses.

(.... well he was before he dropped his senior year.) Only Scout kept him that high - still a chance to be a damn good back though.

In honor of somewittyname I will voice the other item that we are all thinking. DPJ is a BUST! I mean if Black is ahead of him at this stage he will obviously never do anything for the Maize and Blue. This logic is as clear as the Ulizio rant so it must be true.

moving ahead of JBB is probably good news - JBB looked bat last year against Rutgers

unless JBB made HUGE strides I really don't want him starting anywhere on the line

Wow! When somewittyname regains consciousness tomorrow and sees how many points he's squandered, I hope someone's there to provide grief counseling.

Regarding the original post, all I've got to say is: Good luck Norman Ulizio. Get in the competition and give it your best.

Thank you and total respect for all the athletes who represent the University of Michigan.

You mentioned the Metellus info being one and of the best developments... Ever since the Florida game, I had no concern about him even if at another position. Bush's father was right, the kid is a gamer. So I don't view it as a development at all at this point, but maybe I'm in the minority

I actually agree with the general idea of somewittyname's argument. RT is the most worrying spot for me. Although I'm not sure Ulizio's emergence as maybe, possibly a concern has me worried more than before.

But what SWN did was take the Maizen approach of "I'm saying negative things therefore I am way smarter and more objective than you sheeple"
