B1G likely to have officiating "Command Center" for 2023 season
It looks like the B1G is going to have a command center to help officials on the field with replay calls. Apparently, it was the only P5 conference without one.
Here's the link to the On3 article:
Upon further review: Big Ten officiating command center coming
Finding trusted decision-makers to man the command center is a big point of concern. Who will it be?
My sources tell me they've already decided on a shortlist. The main contenders are
What do you think? Will this be an improvement?
Anyone drinking tonight?
It’s about time. Make the calls in the command center. Make them quicker and make them more accurate. Also, Wilson was in.
Wilson was definitely in. What is the replay situation for the playoffs? Do they have a command center?
Appears it was a single replay official, David Almand

Fuck that guy.
And J.T. Barrett did not make the first down.
I've given up on expecting accuracy. I'll look forward to the calls against us coming in more quickly though.
There should also be a "Replay Clock." Refs in the booth have 1 minute to make a determination. If they can't do it in that time, call stands. If MLB can do a pitch clock, CFB can do this.
They could look at the replay, two people debate it without and eye on the clock, and then get the proverbial “play stands as called” after 60 seconds. Not making a decision becomes making a decision.
Wonder if this will lead to X challenges per game.
2 views 1 minute and you are out.
You need to be wowed by how bad the refs missed it or sit the fuck down. Do your job replay people. Which is more often than not doing absolutely nothing,
Isn't the current set up to have a retired official in the booth for reviews? I'd rather have a centralized review hopefully not done by an octogenarian...
And yes, I'm drinking. Finished an old fashioned and now on to a Manhattan.
Keep that up and you will be an octogenarian before your time.
Retired you say? So it’s going to be the O’Neill crew?
How very Big Ten of you!
It never made sense to me to have the referee use a small like 12" monitor on the field to make these decisions, squinting and standing out in the elements with the crowd screaming at him, etc.
This is a joke, right?
Will this be an improvement?
Probably, seems as though this would make week-to-week calls more consistent, and consistency is key.
Anyone drinking tonight?
Heavily, which is why you probably shouldn't trust my judgement.
It *SHOULD* be better. Divorcing replay from the crew on the field makes more sense.
Even better yet will be having the centralized crew explain during the broadcast why they made their ruling, and then the conference or NCAA issue a report the following week rating the crew's performance.
Make those guys publicly state their interpretation then hold them accountable for accuracy.
21 - great idea. A press conference after a day of play, with the “booth crew” answering any questions the media has about their calls / overturns.
I would love to have the USFL style of command center. Reviews are call on the spot in the booth. If you haven't seen its pretty darn cool.
This has to be better right? Right?!
I want to know who are the people in charge of making the decisions in the command center. Where did they go to college? Do they have any kids in a rival school? Do they have the over or the under?
Drinking Blackened
I guess only time will tell on the "better" aspect.
Just finished a pour of Blackened American Whiskey Cask strength Total Wine pick. Seems to be getting better as the bottle opens up.
Now enjoying 1792 Full Proof store pick 👍🥃.
Are you in Rockford, IL? Always wondered if that’s what your name was referring to
It should make replay calls more consistent and get rid of the very worst of the replay bullshit. Whether it does any more than that is something we will have to wait and see.
It's a good idea until the B1G office decides to arbitrarily screw Michigan again.
Drinking Mawby sparkling wine with the wife tonight.
Drinking Mawby sparkling wine with the wife tonight.
Dude, you are such a cliche. Our enemies would mock us by joking that we're all doing that right now. Of course, I'm stuck grading student essays so your night sounds way more fun. Ring me up for Malby with the wife next time, when I'm done. I'll bring the cheese and crackers!
I grew up in Leelanau County not too far from Mawby's Vineyards. I vaguely remember Larry Mawby who established it in the 70s, but my parents know him pretty well.
Nice! No shame in your game!
Wife and I have visited Mawby at least once a year for the last 10 or so years. They have expanded quite a bit. Quite a few good ones to drink but Sex is our go to for Mawby bubbly. It’s a very popular one and for good reason. Enjoy!
So far the drink of choice for tonight has been Bulliet Bourbon and ginger beer. I’m hanging in a hotel lobby in Chicago celebrating son #1’s bday.
I believe nearly all officials try to do their best.
I also believe that officials are swayed, consciously and subconsciously, by crowds.
A Command Center will help that situation some, especially with (brief) time to take a second look.
But I'm not counting on tons of improvement.
Why does the Big Ten hate us?
Jealousy
We can drive around this town and let the cops chase us around…
The past is gone, but something might be found to take its place...
They hate us cause they anus.
Haha, I see what you did there!!😂
Have a great weekend 👍
They hate us because they ain’t us
Just teach them what "irrefutable" means and give them a stopwatch.
Fuck John O'Neil?
That is always the correct answer.
^^^^^^
Couldn't agree more 👍
Moreso Fuck Dan Capron (2016 ref)
That whole crew.......🖕🖕🖕🖕
They need full time referees who train in their offseason to become better officials. This is what the NFL does. There is enough money in the NCAA to make this easily happen. The players and fans deserve this level of officiating. This upgrade of whatever a command center is good, but not good enough.
Are you calling NFL officiating good?
If nothing else, it's FAR better than college - WAY FAR BETTERER than the B1G officials have been over the years... B1G officiating has been the worst of the P5 conferences in the history of football.
YES!!!!!! (to bdneely4)
Can it play the 4?
I've seen them "fix" officiating roughly 100 times in my life.
Not sure I've ever actually seen it get better.
I wouldn’t say I’ve been missing it Bob.
