B1G likely to have officiating "Command Center" for 2023 season

It looks like the B1G is going to have a command center to help officials on the field with replay calls. Apparently, it was the only P5 conference without one.

Upon further review: Big Ten officiating command center coming

Finding trusted decision-makers to man the command center is a big point of concern. Who will it be?

My sources tell me they've already decided on a shortlist. The main contenders are

What do you think? Will this be an improvement?

They could look at the replay, two people debate it without and eye on the clock, and then get the proverbial “play stands as called” after 60 seconds.  Not making a decision becomes making a decision.

Wonder if this will lead to X challenges per game.

Isn't the current set up to have a retired official in the booth for reviews? I'd rather have a centralized review hopefully not done by an octogenarian...

And yes, I'm drinking. Finished an old fashioned and now on to a Manhattan.

It never made sense to me to have the referee use a small like 12" monitor on the field to make these decisions, squinting and standing out in the elements with the crowd screaming at him, etc.

Will this be an improvement?

Probably, seems as though this would make week-to-week calls more consistent, and consistency is key.

Anyone drinking tonight?

Heavily, which is why you probably shouldn't trust my judgement.

Even better yet will be having the centralized crew explain during the broadcast why they made their ruling, and then the conference or NCAA  issue a report the following week rating the crew's performance.

Make those guys publicly state their interpretation then hold them accountable for accuracy.

This has to be better right? Right?!

I want to know who are the people in charge of making the decisions in the command center. Where did they go to college? Do they have any kids in a rival school? Do they have the over or the under?

It's a good idea until the B1G office decides to arbitrarily screw Michigan again.

Drinking Mawby sparkling wine with the wife tonight.

Dude, you are such a cliche. Our enemies would mock us by joking that we're all doing that right now. Of course, I'm stuck grading student essays so your night sounds way more fun. Ring me up for Malby with the wife next time, when I'm done. I'll bring the cheese and crackers!

Nice!  No shame in your game!

Wife and I have visited Mawby at least once a year for the last 10 or so years.  They have expanded quite a bit.  Quite a few good ones to drink but Sex is our go to for Mawby bubbly.  It’s a very popular one and for good reason. Enjoy!

So far the drink of choice for tonight has been Bulliet Bourbon and ginger beer.  I’m hanging in a hotel lobby in Chicago celebrating son #1’s bday.

I believe nearly all officials try to do their best.

I also believe that officials are swayed, consciously and subconsciously, by crowds.

A Command Center will help that situation some, especially with (brief) time to take a second look.

But I'm not counting on tons of improvement.

They need full time referees who train in their offseason to become better officials. This is what the NFL does. There is enough money in the NCAA to make this easily happen. The players and fans deserve this level of officiating.  This upgrade of whatever a command center is good, but not good enough.
