Assuming Moore is the next HC (and Minter and JayBaugh go with Jim)...how would you build the staff?

Nothing is confirmed, but obviously all signs point to Sherrone Moore being named the next head coach at Michigan.

If the rumors of Minter going with Harbaugh are true (again, absolutely nothing confirmed, and hopefully Michigan puts up a salary and title that makes it VERY tough)...and assuming Jay Harbaugh goes with his dad, but everyone else (including Ben Herbert) says...

...how would YOU like to see Moore fill out the rest of the staff?

  • Do you think Moore should remain OC and calling plays?
  • Does Newsome move to OL?
  • What assistant coaches would you like to see added? (sorry, Partridge is not eligible to work at Michigan again)
  • Should Moore add someone with HC experience to his staff?
  • What would you like to see happen with the DC spot if Minter is indeed headed to LA?
  • Do you hire someone from Ravens tree again?

Better, offer Minter $6 million a year to be the new head coach at Michigan. I love Sherrone, but Minter is the more elite coordinator of the two.

Bump Sherrone's salary to $2.5-3 million a year to retain him, then bump Clink or Elston to DC and backfill the rest.

Priority should be on keeping Minter and as much of the current staff as possible. Its a way better letting Minter leave with Harbaugh and go into next season with a rookie head coach AND two new coordinators.

I dont know about Minter being HC but Michigan should do everything they can to keep Minter.  All that money they were going to pay Harbaugh they need to give Minter a raise.  Moore will already get one being HC.

Pay Minter even if its just for one more season. They need that elite defense to win games this season.

Kirk Campbell is GREEN. He was a non-coach analyst at Penn State for 3 years. OC/QB at Old Dominion for one year. An analyst at Michigan. And then a QB Coach for one season. Maybe after a little more experience/time with the program? Which isn't to say I don't like him. I do. It's just a pretty big jump to go from non-coach analyst, to QB coach, to Offensive Coordinator in consecutive years.

If we're "fantasy booking" the job... how about someone we looked at last year? Ravens QB Coach and former candidate for Michigan QB Coach Tee Martin. He's been an OC and successful on the college level. He's in brother John's program right now. And a demon recruiter, widely regarded to be one of the best recruiters in all of college football.

I don't think it'll happen, but he checks a lot of boxes. And he was in consideration last year, so not entirely unrealistic.

I think the problem with any of these hires is we don't know what the offensive identity of this team is or what Sherrone wants it to be. Does he want to continue to just run JH's offense? How much of his fingerprints does he want to put on it?

It's his program now. What does he want the team's offense to look like?  What are his attitudes and opinions about recruiting versus how Jim approached recruiting?

Just because he's "Jim's guy" and because he ran Jim's team how Jim wanted when Jim was out, doesn't necessarily mean he'll be Jim v 2.0 now that it's his team. My hope is that he doesn't try. He's not going to be Jim Harbaugh, or any reasonable fascimile if he tries. Yes, learn from an amazing mentor. But then be yourself and confident in that and your choices.

So... Joe Moorhead? Tee Martin? I think they could be great OC options. They may or may not fit Moore's style. So much is unknown now. It'll be interesting to see. My hope is that Sherrone is a little more aggressive and interested in recruiting, but also wants to build a team culture too. Best of both worlds.

If Moore is coach, he has to give up all OC/OL duties. No rookie coach at a P5 program should have all of those duties.

That said, at least half of the staff is likely gone. Considering a rookie coach with no interim-HC experience in Moore, you have to fill those empty positions with very high-end experienced coaches. Poach from everywhere possible. Use the money saved by not retaining Harbaugh to overpay for quality coaches and put Moore in the absolute best position to win.

Absolutely agree with 1 and 2.

Promote Clink if he can't keep Minter.

Moore was a flexible and creative OC. I'd like to see him poach a proven OC that's not tied to a system that doesn't fit Michigan's personnel. Someone creative and flexible.

A mix of veteran position coaches and top flight recruiters should fill out his staff. If Jay goes, we're going to miss his recruiting. I can't give many names, someone who recruits like Vince Marrow would be great for TE coach. Not sure about him though.

Last week's MGoRadio touched on this: Herbert isn't really a threat to jump because the NFL doesn't really have a version of his job. Instead, every player has his own personal trainer and training regimen, so the team guy is just kinda there. Good thing Michigan invested in its facilities to keep his workplace nice.

This sounds right, but the big difference is that in college the S&C coach is the only coach that has regular access to the players during the offseason. A lot of the team culture is forged during those offseason "practices" in the weight room.

So in college you moreso need a coach who mirrors the style and culture of the head coach, not just a kinesiologist who cranks out training and diet plans.
