Boom, Tila Tequila'd Comment Count

10/11/2010 – Michigan 17, Michigan State 34 – 5-1, 1-1 Big Ten

This just popped into my head in the same way a chorus of angels singing hosannas delivered calculus to Newton: they were probably Juggalos.

There were two of them, and they were walking south down the train tracks just east of the stadium as Michigan State bled the final minutes off the clock. I was in the midst of a stream of mostly Michigan folk who'd had enough—my breaking point was the running into the kicker penalty—moving east with the intent of hitting State Street and parts beyond after following the pathway between the field hockey stadium and football's practice field.

I don't remember much in the way of Juggalo-identifying characteristics except the hats. They were those oversized baseball caps with an enormous, off-center Old English D surrounded by graphic frippery I'm pretty sure designers call "grunge." They were carefully placed on the head, maybe 15 degrees from straight. This has been scientifically determined to be the angle that communicates maximum defiance.

The hats, man. These were the hat equivalent of chrome skulls, because apparently the best way to destroy your credit rating is to buy a bunch of chrome skulls. Maybe this is an urban legend but it's too good not to be true: men in a tall building somewhere have determined that credit card purchases of chrome skulls are inevitably followed by default, and will cease lending money to people who make them. If defiant hat angles left a paper trail these guys wouldn't have been able to get a loan in Zimbabwe.

The rest of it was just a way of confirming the hats. These were guys who had thought to themselves "wait, how do fuckin' magnets work?" They may have been blazed out of their minds at the time but no one can tell the difference any more. The reader will be utterly unsurprised to find out that as these guys approached the intersection with the Michigan fans one of them shouted "who's the little brother now?"

juggalo-riderz

You. Still you. Always you.

Someone in front of me who was either a really pissed off 6'5" guy with a beard or the living manifestation of my id got into it with them. I get why. I mean, you're an adult with a family and a dishwasher. You've never thrown a rock at Tila Tequila. And these guys—who almost certainly didn't even go to the game because they couldn't afford it given the hats, the time and the direction they're walking*—start talking shit to you.

After the path to State Street intersects the tracks it jogs right to give the football field room. So there is this stream of slowly-moving Michigan fans including me and id guy separated from the Juggalos by just a few feet and a fence. For what was probably only a minute but seemed like forever, then, I'm listening to the back and forth between these guys. It's the usual—id guy is repeatedly asked where he went to school until he defiantly points in the direction of campus and says "here," then says his major is "FINANCIAL MATHEMATICS!!!" when pressed.

That was Saturday: financial mathematicians screaming at Juggalos, and the Juggalos winning. The State meathead directly behind me literally said "bitch! fuck you!" whenever MSU tackled Denard Robinson for less than five yards. On Friday, Tim came back to his apartment to find a trail of blood leading to a passed-out State meathead who'd broken in. The same guys who clumsily spray-painted a bedsheet in 2008 to declare their glorious victory over the worst Michigan team in 50 years reprised their genius. As I walked home every glassy-eyed Stiffler that passed me upped the amplitude of my anger/depression cocktail. Jesus, they were everywhere. They came to Ann Arbor cocky and stupid and left cocky and stupid. Enduring it was brutal. In their eyes, that was probably the point.

That's why Mike Hart's comment cut to the quick so much that three years later it's still the first, last, and only thing on the Juggalo mind. If coaching doesn't work out, Hart should start a consulting agency that visits bitter people on their deathbeds and devises things to say that just stick, nagging, sitting on your shoulder and telling you that's really not okay.

As for the current Michigan program, they took a grim step back against Stiffler U and are now poised on the edge of the same cliff no one knew they were falling from until the Illinois game last year. It is really hard to step back and say "it's just one game" after that travesty at Michigan Stadium, both inside and out, but long experience has taught me that gritting your teeth and just getting on with it is better than screaming the name of your major to the world at large.

*(The tracks are mostly fenced and anyone walking down them at that point is coming from well north of the stadium.)

Non-bullets

This guy. I'm about to double this guy's yearly traffic but oh well—this is exactly what I am talking about in blog post form:

And FUCK ROBINSON because it was more than him, Michigan State BEAT THE SHIT out of Michigan across the board, offense, defense, special teams, YOU NAME IT. WE BEAT THE YELLOW BELLY ASS UP AND DOWN THE FIELD.

I feel bad for the MSU fans I know, all fine people who don't own SHAGGY 2 DOPE jerseys, and the guys at The Only Colors but Christ, man. Normal-ish MSU fans were outnumbered ten to one.

Forgotten kindness. I meant to mention this in the aftermath of the Notre Dame game but it slipped my mind until the events of the weekend made me wish I was on the road in South Bend instead of at home against Michigan State: ND fans really are the nicest in the country. There are always Those Guys. In South Bend we had one in the row in front of us a few seats over who kept looking back at us and doing the usual dumbass fan taunting routine. The ND fans around us made fun of him for it. ND spawns the kind of pathology that makes ND Nation the most unintentionally entertaining message board on the internet but the vast majority of the fanbase are just nice people sad about their team.

With Weis gone, I'm not rooting against them in an active way until they're threatening for BCS bowls.

Also something I've forgotten to mention a lot. Drum major David Hines, Jr., probably has the best pregame back bend I've ever seen, and since I remember when the drum majors went from taking off the hat only for big games to doing it all the time, that's probably an all-time record.

This was always going to happen. People complaining about the defense, and there are many: WTF, are you surprised? Are you? Did you sit down at the beginning of the season and look over the post-Woolfolk secondary depth chart and think to yourself "boy, this looks like an average unit we've got right here?" This was already always going to happen last year, when the Decimated Defense Diaries and a simple count of available upperclassmen would have revealed that there was a giant gaping dropoff from the legitimate first-stringers Michigan had at maybe 8 or 9 positions to the second string. Then Donovan Warren, Justin Turner, and Troy Woolfolk departed Michigan's thinnest position. This was entirely predictable:

Plugging the enormous hole at safety would be great, but even if you make the reasonable assumption that Gordon/Kovacs/Robinson is going to be way better than Williams/Kovacs, the massive downgrade at corner means you're probably just treading water. Treading horrible, polluted, razor-blade-filled, despair-laden water.

The defense is off from hopeful expectations in that post but the reason is obvious. The depth chart is what it is.

The doom. I never thought Denard Robinson's problem throwing the ball would be a refusal to take off and run after the timer in the head expires. On all three interceptions he should have just run after he sat in the pocket for two or three beats. The second one was just death—pump-fake, hesitation, slant on the goal line? Guh. I think we all expected Denard would have some issues throwing the ball but three huge mistakes in one game is fatal unless you're going up against a team making those mistakes back at you. Michigan gained 263 yards in a half and had ten points from it.

FWIW, Touch The Banner suggests Denard's first two interceptions were just poor throws against man coverage. I haven't had the benefit of replay yet.

The frustration. The game's killer sequence occurred when Jordan Kovacs tackled an MSU TE three yards short on third and ten only for MSU to catch a break on a false start. On the ensuing third and fifteen Michigan couldn't tackle Keshawn Martin after he caught like a five-yard hitch and they converted. The ensuing touchdown drive was the distance that put Michigan in desperation mode. That's a ferret-puncher right there. Makes you want to go find a ferret, and punch it.

Also you can add many drops, a hopeless MSU pass getting deflected to a receiver, and another missed field goal.

Punt? I know you're down seventeen and it looks grim but a comeback isn't totally out of the realm of possibility… until you punt with like seven minutes on the clock. Apparently Rodriguez owned up to that as a mistake afterwards.

Long runs. I'm going to have a lot of fun figuring out the basic off-tackle runs that Michigan State hit for touchdowns. I'm just hoping Ezeh was not involved so that someone else can come in for the tsking. I do know that on the second one the right side of the line was Patterson and JB Fitzgerald at DE, which got run directly at and did about as well as you would expect. That one's probably on the DL at least somewhat. I'm sure Cam is at fault, too, because I said I like him and he would be important and that he was really good at filling on run plays. This is how the world works.

Cam also had an opportunity to undercut a receiver and intercept a long pass that he did not take; I believe that drive was the one on which MSU ended up in third and thirty-two, so it didn't end up mattering much.

The usual Vincent Smith complaining and counter-complaining and etc. You probably don't want Smith ever getting another third and one carry whether you're on Team Smith or Team Whoever Else. I couldn't believe Michigan 1) went with another inside zone to a back who almost never gets one yard after contact, let alone yards, and 2) didn't get it. Hopkins may have fumbling problems but at some point Michigan's fail on third and one is just as damaging.

Also, the difference between Smith and Shaw was painfully apparent and relevant on a run during one of Michigan's early drives when he broke into the open field with nothing between him and the endzone and got tackled by a linebacker coming from the inside. Shaw probably scores there; Michigan got a field goal on that drive IIRC.

Silver lining. Hey, Penn State looks winnable!

With many others, I agree about the ND fans.  Northwestern, too.

- - -

I was surrounded by Spartans, too.  The ones in front were great and I heard them say "most awesome stadium I've ever seen" or something to that effect several times.  In back?  Mixed bag.  Behind me to my left I had an MSU student (okay guy) and his more cognitively challenged brother (student at a compass-point school that will not be named here).  I engaged the former in conversation a couple of times after plays and he was OK.  His brother looked at me with a dim "Me think him might be h0m0" look on his face.  Odd mixture of fear, anger, and uncertainty.  Directly behind me were a couple of 40-something meatheads (mouth breathers, both -- I could feel it on my tightly-shorn scalp) who spent the whole game screaming "STICK HIM / KILL HIM" whenever Denard got the ball.  I also heard "THAT N1@@3R DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE'S DOING!"

- - -

Part Two, which might be worth an MGoBoard post, concerns the most obnoxious fans in the immediate area.  They had maize shirts.

You honestly heard a person yell the N word in a public setting? I don't care what fan base they were part of, what stadium or even the situation. There is no situation were that is okay. If I heard that I would be in jail and they would be in the hospital.

I lived in Augusta, GA for 3 years when I was in the Navy.  I heard n***** more than a few times in public.

I never liked the SEC, but  grew to despite it while living in the south.  Auburn fans were actually ok.  Worst fans ever?  Hands down, Tennessee.  They're still wanting to fight the Second Civil War over Woodson winning the Heisman over Manning...

Yeah, I really heard that.  If I could edit my post, I'd remove the caps from the last statement, because that definitely was not something the mouth-breather screamed (unlike the STICK HIM remarks).  It was more of an under-the-breath kind of thing.

For whatever reason, I didn't consider involving security.  I understand the violent nature of his remark, but I didn't feel *physically* threatened by the guy, or even close.

That might have been time for security. As much as I wanted to elbow the guy behind me who looked like he was in High School but acted like a downtrodden MSU student right in the nuts when he stood on my seat, I let him have his free speech. But if he had been saying the stuff you heard, security would have been getting  a text.

I couldn't agree with you more on the "most obnoxious fans wearing maize shirts"  I can deal with MSU fans being.....well....MSU fans.  But when OUR fans start the "RichRod sucks" and "he is obviously over his head" bullshit after the FIRST dropped pass I about lost it.

Plus one to you sir.

to assume the defense will give up 35 points, and treat each game as though the sole challenge is for the offense to score more than that.  If we can score 6 touchdowns in 60 minutes we win.  If not, we lose.  If we give up fewer than 35 points, it's gravy -- or, more likely, a hallucination (ideally, slathered with gravy).

i think of how much the offense should score and then think of how many stops we need on D.

For indiana i thought our defense would need to give us 3 stops to win. the goal line fumble made us need another. that prediction was pretty close (i think we got 5 stops)

For MSU i thought we would need 5 stops. this one was way off

Against Iowa i'm thinking we will need 7 stops because i dont think we'll get into the 30s on O

I was watching with the sound off (superstition), so I was completely confused by this play.  I went from cheering to "huh?"...  Why did the refs let the play go on if there was a false start off the snap?

I don't know why, but when I scroll down and see that picture of the carney throwing up some "West side" I can only laugh and think of the scene from "Christmas Vacation" between Eddie and Clark where Eddie is talking about his RV parked in the driveway:

Eddie: And the older boy, bless his soul, is preparing for his career.

Clark: College?

Eddie: (cracking some nuts) Carnival.

Clark: Must be proud.

Eddie: Yeah. Last year, he was a pixie dust spreader on the Tilt to Whirl...

Thanks, I needed that laugh.

The Michigan defense is a bend-dont-break defense.  Because of its lack of depth, it's forced to depend on the other guys making mistakes.

I believe that's one of the biggest reasons they played so much better in the 1st quarter.  Because when everybody's hyped up, and the crowd is screaming, and the Sparty offense has trouble calling plays, that's when they made those mistakes.

As soon as our offense sputtered, the crowd died down, and Sparty started to roll.  One thing I've learned about our team this week: the defense depends on the offense playing well, especially at home, in order to keep momentum going and force the other guys into those mistakes.

Well, it was just one game.

Those who want to stay, be patient and enjoy football season, more power to you. We're going to have fun on the back half of the season.

Those who want to jump of the bandwagon, go become a commentator at Genuinely Sarcastic or something.

Struggles are part of life. If the outcome of the game ruined your day or your weekend, your priorities are out of fucking whack anyway.

Exactly. I was in a bad mood going into the game due to various reasons, the game didn't help, and Spartan fans after the game put me into the worst mood ever. However, my wife and I went to dinner at Conor O'Neill's where I was able to put things in perspective, and then we met up with some of our closest friends for a great night (probably one of the best since the week of my wedding).

It's just a game and letting it ruin your entire night, weekend, week, or year isn't worth the trouble.

This was always going to happen. People complaining about the defense, and there are many: WTF, are you surprised? Are you? Did you sit down at the beginning of the season and look over the post-Woolfolk secondary depth chart and think to yourself "boy, this looks like an average unit we've got right here?"

I agree that our defensive personnel issues are largely beyond GERG's control and they can be used as a mitigating factor for this season.  And yeah, it's unfortunate that they caught that tipped ball, and that Rogers left the game, and so on.  But here's the thing.  With GERG, it's always something.  His defenses never perform well anymore, but people always have some justification.  My concern is not so much that we're struggling now on D, but that going forward, even after our young guys gain experience, I'm not sure how much more they'll improve.  GERG's recent track record is really, really ugly.  HeismanPose posted his defense's numbers since 2004:

  Scoring D Rush D Pass D Total D
2004 - Tex 19 16 58 23
2005 - Syr 64 98 22 57
2006 - Syr 54 110 76 107
2007 - Syr 104 108 102 111
2008 - Syr 102 102 84 102
2009 - UM 76 92 66 82
2010 - UM 75 55 119 112

You have to go back to 2004 to find anything resembling a good defense (and even then, UT got better the following year without him), and 2005 to find a non-horrible defense.  He was at Syracuse four years, and as the HC (and also DC), could install any defense he wanted.  Look at the results.  Do these inspire confidence that he'll ever again field a top-notch defense?  If not, why keep him around?

zlionsfan

October 11th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^

first, because there are so many additional responsibilities that you can't necessarily focus on one area like you can as a coordinator, which means second, there are some (or a lot of) coaches who can be a DC (or OC) but not a HC.

I'm assuming those are ranks by yards (other than the scoring column, obvs). Yards can occasionally tell you a general story but aren't very helpful in the aggregate when talking about success or failure, as we saw in Saturday's first half. (10 yards on 3rd-and-15 not the same as 10 yards on 1st-and-10 and all that.) Football Outsiders shows the defense as 59th this season and 63rd in 2009, which is pretty good given that this year I think the secondary was constructed with baling wire and LEGOs.

If GERG can't take a healthy defense and make the parts into something that can contribute to a championship team, then I would support looking for a replacement, but I don't know that you can use last year and this year as proof that he can't get it done here, not yet at least.

Whomever talked about the scene on Division...by the time I got there, the crowd numbered over a hundred, and they were cordoned off by our finest men in blue.

But, to make me feel slightly better I got a text from a friend ahead of time who warned me, and I repeat it in its entirety..."Walked through a gang of Flintstones.  I was scared."

From what I saw during the game (I did go back a few times on the DVR to watch each play) the two throws into the endzone where just throws that weren't in the right spot for the reciever. Denard was throwing into tight coverage, which is fine, you just have to have more accuracy on those passed. It seemed to be like he left both on the back shoulder of the receiver and since both were covered closely by MSU DBs it was easy for them to grab the passes. The 3rd INT just seemed like a pass that should never had been thrown up. On the 1st big run for a TD, it looked like they had called a zone run to the right and by the time the MSU back hit the LOS, the only two defenders on the left side of the field were already behind him, making the cutback to the end zone wide open. It also seemed for most of the day like MSUs lineman were doing their best Michigan Oline impression and getting to the 2nd level easily to block LBs. Of course ... all of this is from an inexperienced eye that just wanted to see the defense play better.

As a Michigan fan, there will be many, many times in your life where you will encounter Juggalos like the ones Brian wrote about here.  On one occasion, it is OK for you to check this guy to the ground without hesitation or remorse.  I think that's what the 6'5" guy Brian refers to should have done, heck I think it's what Brian should've done, and I've seen a close friend of mine do it to a Stiffler U. student (?)(beating me to the punch) as we were walking home from the Stiffler game in 1990.  (Yes, that game.  Coach Moeller: "He tackled him in the end zone!  HE TACKLED HIM!!")  Walking down Hoover in front of the Natatorium, said Stiffler student is doing the six-gun shooters at every M fan walking solemnly by, only to accidentally brush my friend.  He was correctly deposited to the street surface.

I know many of you are above this, and rightly so.  All's I'm sayin' is that if I see any of you do this, I will just acknowledge you with a nod and that pursed-lipped frown that says, "yeah, that's about right."  And I will have your back, too.  Just don't make it a habit.

I agree with the frustration points completely.  Add to the list:  after the 3rd and 15, a couple of plays later the fumbled snap was kicked right to Cousins, next play @&^^#.   And in the first drive after halftime, Rogers get hurt/cramped up on a play where all he did was drop into a zone?!?  A couple of plays later....%#%^&@.

Those don't excuse the performance issues, but OTOH, the optimist in me always plays the candy and nuts game.  If a couple of those 'random' breaks go a different way, MSU may not have gained all of that confidence and momentum in the 2nd quarter, and the 4th quarter would have been much more interesting.

October 12th, 2010 at 12:13 AM ^

When I saw the fumbled snap and I thought Michigan had it, I was excited and then when I saw Sparty kept the ball I thought to myself, "Man, Michigan can't even get a break".  That sort of sank in when the ball bounced off one Sparty's hands into another's.

I am a Michigan State alumni, but have been regularly reading this blog for 3 or 4 years due to its general quality, intelligence, and wealth of information about the Big10.  However, I feel the need to finally chime in after this unbelievable post.  Tila Tequila?  Juggalos?  Your team got hammered, you can take your lumps like a big boy without resorting to this juvenile attack on the other fan base.  The Only Colors would never have come out with a piece of crap like this.

I'm another life long Michigan State fan who has been a long time reader of your blog, but this post is exactly the type of thing I hope to *avoid* by reading your blog.  It reads like one of the more juvenile posts on the spartantailgate.com message boards, which is no compliment.

Devoting a post, or at least a large part of one, to trying to argue that Spartan fans are like Juggalos?  Is that really the most important thing you had to say?

My parents used to take me to MSU games in Ann Arbor as a kid, and the main thing I remember (besides how awesome the Big House looked in person) was drunk old men and college kids yelling, seemingly in anger, about how I should go back to East Lansing.  Those drunk assholes berating young kids are no more representative of Michigan fans than the "Juggalos" are of MSU fans.  I suppose you know that, which is what makes this post so frustrating.  You aren't actually trying to make a point, you are just trying to insult the team who just beat you, and try to make their fans feel bad in spite of their victory.  The classic playground move of trying to make yourself feel better by insulting others.

I though this blog was a paragon of Wolverine fandom, but even you resort to childish name calling in the wake of a fair beating at the hands of a good MSU team.  If this is representative of the best that Wolverine fans have to offer, maybe more of them are like those drunk guys in Ann Arbor than I had previously thought.

Also, a note on the "little brother" issue.  Most Spartan fans that are honest with themselves will admit that they have a sort of little brother relationship to Michigan (at least in football).  It isn't the worst thing in the world to share a state with the winningest program in all of college football, and it surely makes the victory that much sweeter when we beat you.  But we would argue that it is a relationship that you can no longer take for granted, and it is a position you are going to have to work hard to earn back.  Next year, when we play you, there won't be a single player on our team who remembers what it's like to lose to Michigan, so don't expect them to feel like your little brother when you come to East Lansing next year.

Anyway, please, more of the excellent analysis, less of the childish name calling.

I read this blog quite often because of the awesomeness. But being a Buckeye, it's not something I readily admit to family and friends. I don't post often, only when I am seriously compelled to do so. And today, I can't help but editorialize on this. i have a serious problem with Sparty taking such pride in the losses they've offered you these last three years. I get it; schadenfraude is schadenfradue, but this MSU has not earned the right to be such dicks about beating some of the worst Michigan teams ever. When did this become a real rivalry? I honesty wish we (Buckeyes) had them on the schedule, because this bullshit is insufferable. Sparty needs to do something in Bo and Woody's league before they can beat on their chests. We like to revel in your suffering because we're Ohio State and you're Michigan. We expect the same from you...but MSU? WTF? I'm embarrassed for them.

I know not all MSU fans are this way, but enough of them for are me to generalize. Pull off a 2006 and then you can talk.

See you guys in November.

We can beat our chests because we smoked the #18 team in the country in their house a week after smoking the #11 team in the country at home.  We can beat our chests because we know, though you don't, that it won't get any easier for UM next year, even if they change coaches.  We can beat our chests because we see improvement in our team every single week.  We can beat our chests because we know how to spell 'schadenfreude'.

And frankly?  It irritates us that you have a #1 ranking on the basis of victories over Marshall, Miami (ok, THAT Miami), Ohio, Eastern Michigan, Illinois (barely), and Indiana.  Hooray.  I'll give you credit, you did beat the #11 team in the country at the time.

Here's what I see:  MSU is getting better.  We're not at a Bo/Woody level of sustained excellence yet, 'tis true.  We have our missteps, like last year.  But in the fourth year of coaching this program, Coach Dantonio seems to be putting it all together.  UM fans won't like me saying this, but if we can beat Iowa at Iowa, the UM game will only be the third-best win on our schedule- and we'll all acknowledge it.  Michigan fans want to act like it's no big deal, but you can tell by Brian's infantile troll-baiting that you all wanted this win badly- and you couldn't get it.  With Coach D, I can see MSU becoming an elite program in the Big Ten.

Oh, and one more thing- MSU and OSU don't meet this season, 'tis true.  But we will be playing next year on October 1.  Watch what you ask for, you just might get it- we aren't a bit afraid to share our culture with you just like we've been doing to UM the last three years.

Yes, we've got our share of idiots in the fanbase. And I don't doubt many of them were there on Saturday. But the first 2/3 of this post reads like a weird cross between "waah, the people we've been trash-talking for a decade are trash-talking us" and "it's ok, we're still superior in every way, all evidence on the field to the contrary be damned".

I won't defend anyone blocking traffic, vandalizing cars, or breaking into apartments or houses, all events that ought to lead at minimum to a night in the drunk tank if not jail time. Nor will I defend the Unenlightened Spartan (a first-ballot HTML Hell Hall of Shame entry if I've ever seen one, between the abominable layout and thinking that repeating "scUM" and "Yellow Bellies" constitutes cogent analysis). But if you (the collective fanbase, not anyone in particular here) insist on referring to someone as "little brother" even after they've beaten you twice in a row and then they do it again, you really shouldn't be surprised if that gets thrown back in your face. Bottom line, don't talk trash after a win (or before an anticipated win, in this case) if you can't handle the return fire when you lose.

Thank you for continuing to let it fester.  I think your commenting basically proves what Brian was trying to say.  It stings and annoys you to the core, not because its trash talking, but because the truth hurts.  I own up to it, you were the better team and beat us, but for those words to continue to bother you says something and proves a fact.  We have something you envy, and likely will never achieve and for that you will stay little brother.

Michigan's arrogance was irritating when it was justified, because all we could do is sit there and take it. Now it's more amusing than annoying; trash talk by a team that can't back it up is just sad. (And I would say the same about MSU fans who talked smack during the John L. years; you aren't in a position to ridicule anyone when you routinely not only shoot yourself in the foot, but drop a thermonuclear warhead on it just for good measure.)

At this time next year there will be no players in our locker room who know what it's like to lose to Michigan (the redshirt seniors will have watched one from the sideline in '07 but not have played in it), and no players in yours who know what it's like to beat MSU. I don't expect that state of affairs to last forever, but I do think the days of "little brother" and Michigan winning 80% against MSU are over for the foreseeable future.

it doesnt bother you?  hmm sounds like it.  MSU fans have always had an arrogance no matter who the coach, the only difference is they have never been justified, and this will continue.  You have a chance to be relevant, but we (and you) both know you will "NO SPARTY, NO" it away probably with Illinois this weekend.  After you lose, and naturally return to irrelevance, not one sparty will care because you already won your super bowl.  Congrats on the big win, but until Michigan's national significance is restored (thank god history has been shown to repeat itself) your season's single goal is really lacking the luster it used to have.

I personally have no real issue with Spartan fans behaving like....well.....Spartan fans.  At least in section 5 they were no worse than the Michigan fans I've sat with during road games at Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Purdue and three Rose Bowls.

What i do have an issue with HOWEVA is our mind-numbingly annoying fair-weather fan base that turned on the team and the coaching staff the split second the game took a turn for the worse.  Which, mind you, was the first time all season really we tasted any real adversity. I mean within nano-seconds of the first dropped pass in the second quarter there were people festooned with maize from head to toe screaming "fire RichRod" and "he's over his head" as some of their milder chants.  And it got worse as the game wore on.

I can take the crap from opposing team's fans.  Hell...I live in Ohio and if you think the last 6 years have been any fun around here you'd be nuts.  I've got a guy I work with who sends me an email EVERY FREAKING DAY reminding me of how many days it's been since we beat Ohio State in football.  But when our own "fans" turn on the team I gotta tell you that bothers me more than anything.

I had that behind me at the game.  It was a little funny at first but it got a little annoying after a while.  And it got even more annoying as I heard the Go Green Go White stuff in the stadium.    And it was even more annoying as I tried to yell "Go Blue" to remind these foilks where they were and noone would join me.  Ah well.

I almost always respect the author's opinions and analysis, but when it comes to MSU, he's developing a serious complex, an almost dantonio-esque complex.  To insinuate that the Juggalo represents MSU is asinine.  I'm sure he knows as well as I do that it's a good bet that those Juggalos are bandwagon idiots, and probably were "Huge" Michigan fans when their teams were superior (and will be Michigan fans again the next time UM pulls off a 3+ game streak).  Hell, half of the Wayne County Michigan fans convert to MSU fans for basketball season.  Group pride is rooted in insecurity.

Conversely, this is the representation of the "typical" Michigan fan, a character which I saw no less than 15 times in Ann Arbor on Saturday.

By the way, I would bet he's dipping regular strength vagisil right now.  Poor and Stupid.

Thank you for this post. It is exactly what I needed.

Do you know why you'll always be little brother, Sparty? Because you call us "little sister" when you're nearly forty games behind in the series. You have won 3 of 9, 5 of 15, and 10 of the last 41. Or to quote the poet Sobchak, "life does not stop and start at your convenience, you miserable piece of shit."

You kick our ass and the best way you can think of to rub it in is "I know you are, but what am I?"

Next year's game will feature no players who have participated in a Michigan victory over MSU. Bragging about a 21-of-26 streak that ended before half of the current players were in kindergarten makes you sound like a Domer, completely unaware that this is not 1980 and the landscape has shifted out from under you.

I do think the "little sister" stuff is lame. Then again, so is insisting on calling us "little brother" even after three years of getting beat, two in rather convincing fashion. It should not be a surprise when that sort of trash talk gets thrown back at you when your team fails, yet again, to back it up on the field.

Michigan did dominate this rivalry in the past. And they might well return to dominating the rivalry eventually. (Then again, maybe we'll be selling "Michigan: Returning to Glory Since 2007" T-shirts in East Lansing a decade from now. Predicting trends in college football a decade out is a fool's errand; sportswriters are routinely wrong about who's going to be good a week before the season.) But right now, they don't. And pretending otherwise just makes you look foolish.

In the last couple of days, I can't help but think if anyone else posted this-

As for the current Michigan program, they took a grim step back against Stiffler U and are now poised on the edge of the same cliff no one knew they were falling from until the Illinois game last year. It is really hard to step back and say "it's just one game" after that travesty at Michigan Stadium, both inside and out

There be a hundred posts attacking and negging it. Here, nary a peep.

Brian, I'm going to guess that you wrote this column because you feared you might not have enough material for TWIS, so you're double-dipping.  It's beneath the quality of your writing to stoop to this.  Overgeneralization based on small sample size, perhaps?  Wow, some MSU 'fans' committed various crimes.  Jail is a good place for them, as it would be for any soccer hooligan or OSU fan.  What's next, claiming that every Muslim is a terrorist?

I can tell you I saw an e-mail from an MSU housing officer, letting his counterparts at UM know that they have recourse under their student conduct policy to punish any MSU students who do stupid things in UM dorms, and that they should talk with him if needed.

Basically, you know better.  I come here because I live in Ann Arbor and because the writing is at a higher level than accusing an entire fanbase of being 'juggalos'.  Don't stoop to the fanboy level.
