01/26/2013 - 9:49am My dad was able to retire at age 52

I'll never come close to that. But I when I got divorced last fall, I did go out and buy a 1965 Shelby AC Cobra replica (see avatar). So there's that.

01/20/2013 - 9:22pm I think Webber did it.

Possibly in a game against OSU or MSU.

01/20/2013 - 12:18pm Last Days Of Man On Earth

A good friend of mine in St. Louis started this blog, then stopped it once he moved to New Zealand.  It's more of an archive now, but if you have been or think you might be interested in a lot of obscure New Wave, no wave, post punk, hardcore, and power pop (especially if it came from behind the Iron Curtain), this site is an amazing resource. It was once chock full of downloadable mp3's, but they have been removed. However, if you email the blogger, Joe, he would probably be happy to hook you up.

01/16/2013 - 3:34pm The bit with the ref and the bean bag chairs...

Had me crying last night. I love these, and the NFL one is one of the best, IMO.

I have to second the political ones, no matter what side of the fence you happen to be on. If you read The Onion, and how they treat Joe Biden, then definitely watch the Biden Bad Lip Reading. It's pure gold, Jerry, pure gold.

01/05/2013 - 3:04pm Next season, when Norfleet returns one for a TD...

I am going to do this exact same dance in my living room.

12/05/2012 - 8:04pm Former Navy, 1998-2001

I do like the Army uniform.  That being said,

GO NAVY!!!!!

07/31/2012 - 6:38pm You know...

They all laughed at Dee Dee Ramone when he tried to become a rapper.

Ok, bad example...

06/01/2012 - 10:28pm My wedding day.

I scheduled my entire wedding and reception around Michigan football. My wife was dead set on getting married in early Fall. So we picked apart the Michigan 2010 football schedule and settled on MICH-BGSU. That game was a total blowout, but I still refused to leave the house before the game was over. I came very close to being late to the ceremony.

05/13/2012 - 11:11am It's not creepy

...until Brian photobombs a bris.

05/13/2012 - 11:07am I like Zingerman's.

But the corned beef at The Stage in West Bloomfield is better, IMO.

05/01/2012 - 6:34pm I have...

...donated more time, money, heart and soul, and all-around emotional invetsment in the University of Michigan than I have my own alma frickin' mater.

Anyone who says that I am not a "Michigan Man" can kiss my maize and blue ass.

Also,

GET OFF MY LAWN*

(*This was posted after downing two New Holland Dragon's Milks.  Don't judge me.)

04/30/2012 - 5:08pm At least he didn't type

Lee Greenwood.

04/22/2012 - 10:00am I hear you.

I currently work as a federal contractor.  I do not make a ton of money, but because the cost of living is so low in STL, I can live like a king here. If I went to either Wash U. or SLU law school, I'd be looking at 100K in student loans, and would most likely have to sell my house because I wouldn't be able to afford a mortgage plus law school debt.  I graduated from the U. of San Francisco in 1997, and was immediately $30K in debt (back then, USF was $14,440/year, which is nothing when you consider the school is now something like $34K a year in straight tuition).  However, it's now 2012, and I still have around $3K in federal loans to pay off.  I'm really not insterested in paying off any more school loans after paying them off for 15 years.

Regarding the overall job situation for people with advanced degrees: it's a mess right now.  My wife has a PhD in chemistry and currently works as a research scientist at Wash U. med school, which is one of the Top 10 med schools in the US right now.  Despite having a bunch of chem companies here (Monsanto, Sigma-Aldrich, Mallincrockdt), she is basically doomed to work as a post doc for the time being because to save money, the major chem companies laid their PhD's off and outsourced the work to India.

A friend of ours is a Michigan grad who earned his PhD in astro physics last year from Wash U.  He was laid of by Boeing because once he earned his doctorate, they didn't want to give him a raise.  He's now teaching math & physics at a local JC and building handmate guitar amps and effects pedals.

04/22/2012 - 8:04am I've about law school, too

I live in St. Louis. The only 2 law schools in the area are at Washington U. and St. Louis University. Academically, Wash U. may be the best in MO overall and it's law school is very well thought of locally. SLU's law school is ok. Mizzou's law school is 2 hours away, and it's law school is probably on a par with SLU.

I have 2 friends that both graduated law schools in 2010. One went to Wash U. and one went to SLU. Both of them have advised against me getting my JD, at least for now. They both could not find jobs for the longest time. The Wash U. grad ended up taking a crappy government job reviewing contracts for GSA. The SLU grad is essentially fixing parking tickets. They both make barely enough money to cover their living expenses plus their student loans.

Mind you, they both stayed in St. Louis, and obviously didn't go to Michigan Law. But it was enough for me to rethink going to law school.

04/08/2012 - 12:49pm Rest in Peace, Mr. Wallace.

Didn't Wallace provide the voiceover in one of Michigan's in-game school promos a few years back?

04/07/2012 - 5:39pm I don't care what my rabbi thinks.

I AM TOTALLY CELEBRATING EASTER THIS YEAR.

04/05/2012 - 9:24am I am totally going to buy a jersey.

Yep, as soon as they become available.

I actually don't pay all that much attention to MLS, but I do follow Liverpool pretty closely.  I also root for Ross County in the Scotish First Division (Go Staggies!).

03/22/2012 - 4:36pm Do they use any of their 5 bathrooms...

or do they just use coolers?

03/21/2012 - 6:26pm I got 99 problems...

but my MICHIGAN ain't one.

03/09/2012 - 11:42pm Since its an election year and all

I'm voting for BEAT OHIO.

02/15/2012 - 4:35pm One of the flags

should be the Bolivian flag.

02/06/2012 - 6:15am As a Detroit Lions fan...

I'd be hard pressed to call this regular season meaningless.

First winning season in a decade, first playoff game in a decade... For the first time in a long time, I had a reason to care about what went on in the NFL this year.

01/05/2012 - 6:13pm Jesus.

San Ramon Valley High... I graduated from California High in San Ramon, and SRVH was one of our big rivals.  Seeing them wear that helmet made me want to punch someone.

12/24/2011 - 10:26am Got unused musical instruments?

I've been collecting, resotring, and playing vintage drum sets now for over 20 years.  Normally, I find my stuff through ads on CL or from local garage and church sales.  Every now and then I come across some nice drums or cymbals needing a little TLC that I would not personally play for various reasons.  I pick them up for a song, fix them up, and then donate them to the local music department of a local public school.

So many people have old instruments tucked away in a basement or attic collecting dust.  Please consider taking them out and donating them to a local school.  Funding for arts programs is almost always the first thing to go when school districts feel a money pinch; the kids could really use them.  The schools are always happy to have them, and will gladly provide a receipt for tax purposes.

12/17/2011 - 9:57am Well...

No one seems to know what a Hokie is, either, but you won't see VA Tech changing their name anytime soon.

12/13/2011 - 5:57pm I like them.

A lot.  I also liked the OTL jerseys and the road jerseys vs. Sparty.

12/13/2011 - 5:56pm I read this as

Hoke to visit Joe Biden tomorrow.

Man, would I love to listen in on THAT meeting.

12/08/2011 - 8:44pm NSFMF

St. Louis is like 5 hours from KU. I've lived in St. Louis for 10 years. STL, as a BBQ town, is a myth. STL-style BBQ sucks, IMO. They let the stuff simmer in this highly acidic vinegar / catchup concoction for hours. It's terrible. (Don't get me started on STL-style pizza...)

Now, KU is only 45 minutes from Kansas City, which really might be the BBQ Capital of America.

11/09/2011 - 9:18pm Look on the bright side:

You still have Temple football.

11/09/2011 - 9:17pm Look on the bright side:

You still have Temple football.

10/30/2011 - 12:54pm The State University of Ohio

For Kids That Can't Read Too Good

10/19/2011 - 5:56pm Give me a break.

The road uniforms have sucked for a while. People have put up with them because they are road uniforms:  they have changed a hundred times over the years, and they have no tradition, period.

The uni's they wore in EL were great, IMO.  I'd rather have them than their official roads.

08/26/2011 - 9:12pm Let's all band together...

...and put Dave Brandon in a woodchipper.

07/05/2011 - 4:43pm The new owner will be shocked...

when they find Gerg's body buried in the backyard.

06/01/2011 - 6:48pm One of my favorite Shanahan moments:

05/24/2011 - 4:43pm As a former club lax player in college...

and a lifelong fan of the Michigan Wolverines, this makes me very, very happy.

GO BLUE.

PS - Here's to beating the snot out of UVA, Princeton, and Hopkins for years to come!

05/23/2011 - 4:41pm I was on jury duty last week.

1st degree murder case, non-capital.  The 32-year old defendant was found guilty and will be spending the rest of her life in prison without the possibility of parole.

A 40 year sentence, in this Bama fan's case, is essentially a life sentence for destruction of property.  IMO, that's way too much.

05/20/2011 - 9:34pm I like the jerseys.

It's for one stupid game. Get over it.

05/14/2011 - 4:18pm If this happened at OSU

They would have bought the recruit a car.

05/13/2011 - 6:22am Lions football

... is only a few months away! Oh, wait...

Nah, it's tough to be sad about the Wings of Red. They showed some heart, and in the end, it was tough to overcome Franzen, Bertuzzi, and Cleary injuries. If Lindstrom does not come back, it was one Hell of a ride and an amazing career.

05/11/2011 - 5:14pm A very sad ending

...to a very sad story overall.  Rest in peace, Tractor.

05/02/2011 - 3:36pm Just received my letter today...

...and it's all or nothing for season tix.  I actually would prefer a 3-4 game package as I live in St. Louis, and I can only make it up to AA for a couple of games a year.  I'm not sure what I am going to do just yet.  My tix would be in one of the end zones.  I would take the bst 3 games for myself, then try to sell the rest of them.  But I'm not sure that I would be able to sell a game v. Eastern at face value ($60.00/ticket).

04/23/2011 - 9:56am I bought 2 of the foam cushions that have handles on them

...at the Big Chill.  They work surprisingly well.  I have an office job, and took it to work with me because the chair at my desk sucks.  The cushions that the OP is talking about sound even better.

04/23/2011 - 9:55am Our plans were ruined.

My wife and I were planning to go to the Schlafly Tap Room last night, but the string of violent thunderstorms and tornados last pretty much killed that idea.  Instead, we sat in our basement, drank some Two-Hearted Ale, and played Scrabble until the storm passed.

04/22/2011 - 7:18pm Polo...

...is so 1986.

Also, my wife's stepfather bathes in that crap.  I can't go near the bottom floor of a Macy's because of it.

04/22/2011 - 4:43pm KC would be a bad idea
For starters, KC had and lost an NHL team – the Scouts – who moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies (who then moved to NJ and became the Devils).  And despite having various minor league teams over the years, KC is not a hockey town.

The city can’t even support their baseball team.  My wife’s entire family is from KC and they are all Cardinals fans. They also lost an NBA team, the Kings.

The Chiefs run that town.  Seriously, all anyone from KC really cares about is the Chiefs, and to a lesser extent, KU basketball.

03/28/2011 - 4:16pm The upper bowl was empty

...because they did not open it up for the tournament games.  In fact, every one of the entrances to the upper bowl was seemingly blocked by small elderly black woman with scowls on their faces.

STL is a decent hockey town.  It ain't Detroit.

03/27/2011 - 8:11am He gave all of his M gear away.

The man has to wear something!

03/27/2011 - 6:24am It was a great couple of nights

I haven't been to Yost in many years.  But I drove up to AA to see the Big Chill, and I got to see them play these last 2 nights.  It's been a Hell of a run, and there's only 2 more games to go.

GO BLUE.
