TomVH: Hakeem Flowers Update
South Carolina 3 Star WR Hakeem Flowers is announcing tomorrow at 7:15pm. I would have said we have nothing to worry about a week ago, but I don't think that's the case anymore.
He's deciding between Michigan, NC State, LSU, and Oregon. I would watch out for NC State. I'll elaborate once he decides tomorrow. This could change back in Michigan's favor, it just depends on what happens today.

or Florida...
January 22nd, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
Really, Florida wanted Denard as a QB? Who knew?
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:05 PM ^
...If I understand what he has typed is that UM has not been in contact with him and should they not call him today, Flowers will realize UM has backed off of his recruitment. Which would lead me to believe they have someone else in the cross hairs who they believe they will sign. Would that be a reasonable assessment?
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:41 PM ^
It's unlikely that 1) they think they have a near certain commitment from a WR who is better than both Flowers and Devin Lucien (who was apparently ready to commit) and 2) TomVH and the recruiting fanatics like DGDestroys have never heard of this unknown WR. (Or, in the alternative, that they heard and haven't whispered even a hint about it.)

Tom is the greatest. That goes withou saying. Still the net is so wide right now that it is very difficult to know everyone that we might be receiving interest from, or have interest in. Granted offense prospects are probably a lot more predictable outside of a fullback or drop back quarterback suddenly looking at us closer.
IMO, If we don't get a receiver in this class, it is no big deal with our numbers. It is a luxury when we are so in need of defense.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:28 PM ^
So guys actually choose the school they'll be going to for four years based on a single phone call?
WTH?
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:53 PM ^
and gives Flowers a call today.
January 22nd, 2011 at 5:49 PM ^
and gotta a commitment out of that...i think blue is in good shape to come up roses here.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
Once again proves the point that Scout isn't worth paying for.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:36 PM ^
Tome Beaver = moron !
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:45 PM ^
In your case, I think you mean "moran."

Sorry, TomVH, that was immature of me. I couldn't help it.
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:44 PM ^
Tom VH we appreciate your work, Good or Bad we can not win all the recruits. NOW SOMEONE FROM THE HOKE CAMP, PLEASE MAKE THE CALL TO HAKEEM THE DREAM!
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:49 PM ^
Ahhhh Hoke doesn't care about offense hahahahahahahahaha
No, seriously, I'd like to get Hakeem Flowers.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:29 PM ^
Are you saying that Hoke is the "anti Rich"?
BTW...the chick in those Farmers University ads is hot.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:56 PM ^
Yeah, but the bald black guy is the funniest.
"You do know this is just an exercise?"
"I do now, sir."
January 22nd, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
It would be nice to land him. Sounds like a fine player. But if we don't, it's no biggie. Really, aren't 3-star type receivers kind of a dime a dozen? Plus, we have a decent collection of receivers waiting in the wings. Stokes. Jackson. Ricardo. All the smurfs? Young receivers adapt faster than most other position players.
It's just my sense that receivers aren't the biggest recruiting challenge. They aren't as rare or scheme-specific as, say, nose-tackles or running-backs (unless the scheme involves ninja-smurfs -- in which case, it's still not a problem, since most teams don't covet smurfs). Stakes just aren't as high.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
definitely not that of a three star or either of the two commits this staff has accepted. Flowers is actually being recruited by schools that aren't perennial cellar dwellers.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:32 PM ^
Yeah. Maybe he's vastly underrated and clearly a star in the making. But I'm pretty sure M is well aware of the kid. I doubt he's slipping through the cracks here. M seems to be in the driver's seat. So let's trust the coaches to make the right call.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:32 PM ^
Damn right lets make the right call! I'm looking at you Hoke. Flowers is just a phone call away.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:03 PM ^
This is not a "must get", but it is a good pick up for depth and development. I'm much more for having him commit than I am for not caring.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:13 PM ^
I would almost bet that Hoke told Lucien that if Flowers or a suprise WR guy commits like Arnett that he may switch Lucien to DB. Lucien then told them he did not want to play DB and announced to everyone that he was being recruited for defense.
Dont be surprised to see Lucien commit as a WR once Hoke and gang get two more DBs / Safeties and no other WR's commit.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:15 PM ^
You basically tell a kid who wants to be a Wolverine to F off and expect him to come back to you as your backup plan?
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:10 PM ^
Basically told him to F off? Wow. You sure have been talking out of your ass a lot today. Telling someone that you want him at a different position isn't telling him to F off. By that logic Alabama told Dee Hart to F off when they asked him to play CB.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:25 PM ^
Not gonna happen. Lucien has other options.
Hoke should have picked him up. And if not him, then Flowers. Weird.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:22 PM ^
was told they wanted him as DB because they had more need for defense, and holding off on Flowers may mean they're sure enough of some of the offered DBs that they can go back to Lucien and add him as a WR.
Total speculation. But it will allow me to think this is good news.
EDIT: Obviously not just my fantasy. And I too thought that Lucien may be disillusioned by the approach of the new coaches, but if he realizes he's the first choice WR after all, knowing that they had a higher need for DBs...
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:46 PM ^
After they tell you that they really want you for DB, could you trust them to leave you at WR for the next 4 years?
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:22 PM ^
Wouldn't reflect all that well on Lucien. But, hey...
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:23 PM ^
How does one day make a difference in a guy's decision?
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:25 PM ^
Someone please call him!
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:26 PM ^
Raymon Taylor committed.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:28 PM ^
Seriously?
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:29 PM ^
neither site has a story up, but they're both teasing it pretty hard on their message boards.
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:29 PM ^
This better not be a BKfinest moment...
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:31 PM ^
I call him?
January 22nd, 2011 at 2:40 PM ^
pop up on Google "Real Time Results." Expect a post from him any second now.
EDIT: Should have been posted as sub-reply re: Raymon Taylor. Was too eager.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:00 PM ^
well NC State only has 15 commits, no WRs or DBs though they do have 3 athletes committed. Guessing he isn't waiting to hear on if he has a spot or not in their class based on those numbers.
hmmmmmm
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:07 PM ^
Because WE have nothing to fear but fear itself, and our weekend runneth over!
We have, THE CLOSER and his magical SNAKE OIL, new and improved for 2011!
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:19 PM ^
i agree with alot of you about lucien, maybe flowers is more the type of wr hoke wants, but what happens to all these smallish slot recievers mich has right now? odoms, grady, robinson, gallon, barpol? do you think any of these guys transfer now that we are out of the spread? it certainly seems like there isnt room for all them. 6-1 190, and 4 stars and want to come here seems like we shouldnt pass it up
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:25 PM ^
If Hoke calls, then Flowers is a great WR prospect.
If Hoke doesn't call, Flowers is mildly overrated and we don't need WRs in this class.
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:35 PM ^
What a offer list for Flowers, seems like a easy legitimate 4*, Hoke needs to push hard to round him up
January 22nd, 2011 at 3:40 PM ^
I think Blueblood is right. The Hokester may feel that Flowers is a very good talent, but given the amount of WR's we have right now when you include the slots it is probably overkill when compared to all the other positions of need yet to be addressed. RR did go crazy for Slot Ninja's like all of us over the past few years and Hoke does not seem to use Ninja's (at least slot ones) so they will become wide outs or another position switch. He need's to use the available schollies in other areas (OL, DL, LB, QB).
Hard to pass on good talent, but not a position of glaring need and we can probably/hopefully pull in some attractive WR's in the next couple classes.
Would love to have him, but got to trust the Hokester on this.
January 22nd, 2011 at 4:16 PM ^
love that comment, thats going to be my new slogan for 2011
January 22nd, 2011 at 4:06 PM ^
that included Flowers and Showers...
(sigh)
January 22nd, 2011 at 4:18 PM ^
With less than 2 weeks left, we are heading in the right direction. Time will tell all, but with this new staff ... we will see some suprises come National Signing day.
The sky is blue, the grass is green, it's great to be a fan of, MEEEECHIGAN! Go Blue!
January 22nd, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
someone on the Michigan coachign staff should really call Flowers and say they want him. We have no business rejecting two 4 start receivers. I don't care how many wide outs we have. Got to go get the special ones that want Michigan.
January 22nd, 2011 at 7:04 PM ^
I'm sure the coaching staff has no idea what they are doing. I am sure they get all of their best advise from blog posters.
/s
January 22nd, 2011 at 5:20 PM ^
Coaching staff feels that we have a much bigger need at CB, TE and DL. The feel the need is so much larger that they need to take depth recruits over potential starters at WR.
In addition this maybe in response to the fact that we just don't have enough bodies for even special teams. You don't pick those two three stars from Ohio when you have higher rated players at a different position if you don't believe those players are multifaceted and provide need
January 22nd, 2011 at 5:33 PM ^
Will also be in on 4 & 5 * all over the place next year. So they may bank them as opposed to accepting positions of less need
January 22nd, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
What other offensive recruits are we targeting right now other than Chris Bryant? It seems like everyone who we may have a chance of landing is on the defensive side of the ball. Would losing out on Flowers open up an offer to any other offensive recruits? I know we just got a commit from a 3* TE, but are we looking for any other players at the skill positions?
