TomVH: Hakeem Flowers Update

Submitted by TomVH on

South Carolina 3 Star WR Hakeem Flowers is announcing tomorrow at 7:15pm. I would have said we have nothing to worry about a week ago, but I don't think that's the case anymore.

He's deciding between Michigan, NC State, LSU, and Oregon. I would watch out for NC State. I'll elaborate once he decides tomorrow. This could change back in Michigan's favor, it just depends on what happens today.

...If I understand what he has typed is that UM has not been in contact with him and should they not call him today, Flowers will realize UM has backed off of his recruitment. Which would lead me to believe they have someone else in the cross hairs who they believe they will sign. Would that be a reasonable assessment?

It's unlikely that 1) they think they have a near certain commitment from a WR who is better than both Flowers and Devin Lucien (who was apparently ready to commit) and 2) TomVH and the recruiting fanatics like DGDestroys have never heard of this unknown WR. (Or, in the alternative, that they heard and haven't whispered even a hint about it.)

Tom is the greatest. That goes withou saying. Still the net is so wide right now that it is very difficult to know everyone that we might be receiving interest from, or have interest in.  Granted offense prospects are probably a lot more predictable outside of a fullback or drop back quarterback suddenly looking at us closer.

IMO, If we don't get a receiver in this class, it is no big deal with our numbers. It is a luxury when we are so in need of defense.

It would be nice to land him. Sounds like a fine player. But if we don't, it's no biggie. Really, aren't 3-star type receivers kind of a dime a dozen? Plus, we have a decent collection of receivers waiting in the wings. Stokes. Jackson. Ricardo. All the smurfs? Young receivers adapt faster than most other position players.

It's just my sense that receivers aren't the biggest recruiting challenge. They aren't as rare or scheme-specific as, say, nose-tackles or running-backs (unless the scheme involves ninja-smurfs -- in which case, it's still not a problem, since most teams don't covet smurfs). Stakes just aren't as high.

This is not a "must get", but it is a good pick up for depth and development. I'm much more for having him commit than I am for not caring.

I would almost bet that Hoke told Lucien that if Flowers or a suprise WR guy commits like Arnett that he may switch Lucien to DB.  Lucien then told them he did not want to play DB and announced to everyone that he was being recruited for defense.

Dont be surprised to see Lucien commit as a WR once Hoke and gang get two more DBs / Safeties and no other WR's commit.

was told they wanted him as DB because they had more need for defense, and holding off on Flowers may mean they're sure enough of some of the offered DBs that they can go back to Lucien and add him as a WR.

Total speculation.  But it will allow me to think this is good news.

EDIT: Obviously not just my fantasy.  And I too thought that Lucien may be disillusioned by the approach of the new coaches, but if he realizes he's the first choice WR after all, knowing that they had a higher need for DBs...

well NC State only has 15 commits, no WRs or DBs though they do have 3 athletes committed.  Guessing he isn't waiting to hear on if he has a spot or not in their class based on those numbers.

i agree with alot of you about lucien, maybe flowers is more the type of wr hoke wants, but what happens to all these smallish slot recievers mich has right now? odoms, grady, robinson, gallon,  barpol? do you think any of these guys transfer now that we are out of the spread? it certainly seems like there isnt room for all them. 6-1 190, and 4 stars and want to come here seems like we shouldnt pass it up

I think Blueblood is right.  The Hokester may feel that Flowers is a very good talent, but given the amount of WR's we have right now when you include the slots it is probably overkill when compared to all the other positions of need yet to be addressed.  RR did go crazy for Slot Ninja's like all of us over the past few years and Hoke does not seem to use Ninja's (at least slot ones) so they will become wide outs or another position switch.  He need's to use the available schollies in other areas (OL, DL, LB, QB).

Hard to pass on good talent, but not a position of glaring need and we can probably/hopefully pull in some attractive WR's in the next couple classes.

Would love to have him, but got to trust the Hokester on this.

With less than 2 weeks left, we are heading in the right direction.  Time will tell all, but with this new staff ... we will see some suprises come National Signing day.

The sky is blue, the grass is green, it's great to be a fan of, MEEEECHIGAN!  Go Blue!

someone on the Michigan coachign staff should really call Flowers and say they want him.  We have no business rejecting two 4 start receivers.  I don't care how many wide outs we have.  Got to go get the special ones that want Michigan.

Coaching staff feels that we have a much bigger need at CB, TE and DL.  The feel the need is so much larger that they need to take depth recruits over potential starters at WR.

In addition this maybe in response to the fact that we just don't have enough bodies for even special teams.  You don't pick those two three stars from Ohio when you have higher rated players at a different position if you don't believe those players are multifaceted and provide need

What other offensive recruits are we targeting right now other than Chris Bryant? It seems like everyone who we may have a chance of landing is on the defensive side of the ball. Would losing out on Flowers open up an offer to any other offensive recruits? I know we just got a commit from a 3* TE, but are we looking for any other players at the skill positions?
