The Big House Has Lights! Pics
"The Lights are one thin strip across the top of each of the boxes. All of the pictures are of the lights on the east side box."

LEDs are low power but not high output. My bet is they are HIDs.

i saw it earlier tonight from the Main and Packard intersection. it looked pretty bright and impressive.
early season night games are going to be so amazing and comfortable.

Looks awesome. Any chance they're using LED technology? They look very modern and much brighter than your traditional stadium lighting. I didn't read anything to that effect, but I would think they would've at least considered it.

LED is not the highest efficiency method of lighting. Gas discharge lamps can be equal or better, with better color rendition.

any type of light that doesn't do this:
Speaking as a photographer, that's the WORST THING EVER.

Could be LED, Dallas Cowboys Stadium had all LED lights?

They do look very similar to the Cowboys Stadium lights. They're NOT LED, though. If you read the article carefully, the LED lighting was used the suites and club areas. These are actually HID (metal halide) lamps with a hot restrike so they are basically instantly re-lit in the event of an outage.

I was part of a committee that was investigating lighting for a baseball field. I learned a lot about lighting and much has changed in the last 10 years.
New lighting is much more focused. The old way was just to throw a lot of light out on the field until it was sufficiently illuminated. Now with fields being closer to residential neighborhood (read zoning issues) and energy costs, the amount of light is much more focused and as a whole less is needed. Very important consideration is paid to spillover light since those are just wasted candlepower.
I saw some amazing setups where the field would be bright as daylight, but 10 feet away from the fences it would be almost completely black. Looking at the upper seats in the stadium pics, I think they are using the same very focused setup.

Dave Brandon posted it on his twitter account earlier today! He said "let there be light" also metion that they were finshed ahead of schedule...

That is friggin sweet.

Oh Snap! Real Deal! Those are plenty bright enough. Man, that ND game is gonna be EPIC. Can't wait to see the home jerseys under the lights.
November 19th, 2010 at 12:24 AM ^
EPIC indeed.
November 18th, 2010 at 11:02 PM ^
That looks amazing. Is it too late to push the Wisco kickoff back to 3:30??
November 18th, 2010 at 11:46 PM ^
How about 7:30?
November 18th, 2010 at 11:06 PM ^
Those look right out of Blade Runner. Awesome.
November 18th, 2010 at 11:35 PM ^
This exceeds my expectations infinitely. This stadium is the classiest in all of college football
November 18th, 2010 at 11:54 PM ^
Should be selling them, framed. It could become as common as the sunset over the Stadium picture.
November 19th, 2010 at 12:25 AM ^
I can't picture that picture. Sounds awesome, link?

I have the photo framed, over my fireplace. Plus, I completely forgot to make the relation till today, but it's on the T-Shirt I'm wearing today, commemorating the 800th program win (vs. Wisconsin in 2000).

Plenty bright for football!
Also, might want to host those photos on a different hosting site, and switch to plain text editor for the link.

I think it looks absolutely amazing.
I need to make it back for the ND game now for sure!

I booked my hotel reservations exactly 364 days in advance of the game ND game. Hotel computers wont take reservations more than one year in advance and when I started looking around about half the places were already booked solid. I had to pay $280 for a double queen room in advance with a no refund policy. But Im booked baby and will be hitting the tailgate about noon i figure with zero intentions of driving back to Cleveland until sometime Sunday afternoon. Is Angelo's open on Sunday's?
God I love capitalism.......

I don't think they could have done that any better -- they put more than enough light, but they're incredibly low-profile. And instead of having the light come from just four towers, it spreads out the light sources.
All Dave Brandon does is win win win no matter what.

I went to the basketball game tonight and they were on...They look pretty sweet
November 19th, 2010 at 12:04 AM ^
I just saw them as I was enjoying a... cigarette from my porch. They are truly majestic.

I've always complained about how dark it looks in the big house even with the lights on. It looks fine on TV, but at the House, it looks dark and overcast.
I hope these new lights are much brighter.
November 19th, 2010 at 12:10 AM ^
How fast does their light travel and should our quarterback be concerned at all about this?

So many nights I sit by my window
Waiting for someone to sing me his song
So many dreams I kept deep inside me
Alone in the dark but now
You've come along
You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song
Rollin' at sea, adrift on the water
Could it be finally I'm turning for home?
Finally, a chance to say hey,
I love You
Never again to be all alone
You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song
You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song
It can't be wrong
When it feels so right
'Cause You
You light up my life

It would be cool if the lights were one continuous unbroken strip on top of the boxes.
November 19th, 2010 at 9:22 AM ^
I love how the majority of the bowl is still dark since the bright lights are focused on the field. Reminds me of the Lakers gym where you can barely see the crowd past the first 5-7rows and the court just exploding with light.
I love it.

Let there be light.....
November 19th, 2010 at 11:15 AM ^
the way the lights are installed will minimize shadows. The four tower look creates, well, four shadows. With the lights in a line and what looks like more actual lights than on the towers, the shadows should be a minimum.
It looks like they tried to follow Alabama's lighting. I've thought Bryant-Denny was the best lighted stadium in college football
November 19th, 2010 at 11:50 AM ^
Now let's have a game!
November 19th, 2010 at 12:16 PM ^
That would have been sooooo awesome if they would have made the Wiscy game a 3:30 game and the second half would have been played after sunset with the lights. Man, that would have been sweet.
November 19th, 2010 at 12:31 PM ^
...That are retractable...awesome
