Dantonio Stable After Heart-Related Matter

Submitted by jokenjin on

Per one of my friends at MSU who has ties to the athletic department, and let me quality first by saying:

THIS IS JUST A RUMOR

Apparently, Mark Dantonio suffered a heart attack and there will be a 1 pm EST press conference about it. He heard it from Fox Sports News reporter Jennifer Hammond but can't get anyone actually in the department to verify anything.

Granted, we had that same hoax when some sideline reporter said that Tate was transferring, so take this with a HUGE grain of salt.

[Mod edit: AP reports the same]

Heart Attack before the Rose Bowl after the epic upset of Ohio State. Never wish heart problems on anyone, but with D'Antonio, Urban Meyer, etc. I think that head coaching may be approaching Deadliest Catch levels of stressful job status.

ESPN is reporting he had a stent put in a blocked artery. No mention of his current status. This is clearly not a minor issue,  hopefully he is recovering well.

I thought he had a strange reaction/demeanor when that reporter was interviewing him right after the game last night.  In hindsight this doesn't surprise me.

I hope he recovers well, and can get through this with no lasting effects.  Sparty dislike aside, he's an OK guy.

This is unbelievable news.  Football is a game played for our enjoyment.  The health of another human being is so much more important, it's not even worth mentioning.  Get well soon, coach.

Depending on the severity of  myocardial damage, his length of stay in the hospital should be less than one week.  I don't think he'll coach next week.  It is possible that he could coach in two weeks however.

And now that he knows it's an issue, he'll be watched carefully.  Can't imagine his doctors wanting him back on the sidelines right away.  We fans get stressed enough when our team is playing; it's got to be stress to the nth degree for the coaches.  And that exciting finish last night... Even positive stress is stress on the system.

Best wishes to him, his family, and the MSU community.

Ditto.  Hope he recovers fully.

Is it bad that I think this was caused by the overwhelming joy from his ballsy call last night?  I don't think I've ever seen him smile like that ever.

In fact, I think this is some real video of what happened to his heart:

Too soon?

Despite my misgivings about the guy as a coach, my best wishes (as well as the UM faithful) go out to Dantonio.  Hopefully he will recover fully and be back to coaching as soon as possible.

1-2 with the Irish so far, but you can't question his evil voodoo powers.  I'm guessing future opponents are going to run off-tackle a lot and kick on 4th down.

Hope Coach Dantonio makes a full and speedy recovery.

The articles say that Coach Dantonio was taken to the hospital hours after the game- early intervention is important when it comes to myocardial ischemia. I'm just a medical student but the articles all note they intervened early enough, rather than a few days later. His doctor said just as much, and they expect a full recovery. So that's a very good thing and I have nothing but the best wishes for the MSU family as he recovers.

the game with MSU wont be the same without you.

The stress these coaches are under is just incredible.  Most of us have no idea what its like.

My dad has had 4 heart-attacks. There is no such thing as a "minor" one.

I hope for his families sake he walks away from coaching instead of putting his health/life at further risk by staying in the pressure cooker that is the life of a major college coach.

Godspeed to you coach.
