Talking Cars Tuesday: What was your childhood dream car?

Submitted by JFW on

Let's stick to what was in production at the time.

What car got you going in middle school? Corvette? Ferrari? Mustang Cobra II....?

For me, my dream car being produced as a kid was the (brand new!) Dodge Viper. I also fancied the Corvette ZR-1 (C4, mercury marine version).

I had a poster of a Vector W2 up; but I'm not sure if that ever reached production.

When I was a teenager (late 50s and early 60s), the only real choice was the Vette.  I have always loved the 1957-60 Vettes.  Then, when the 1963 Corvette came along, WOW!  I can still remember seeing it at the Detroit Auto Show in bright red.  Years later, I did buy a used 1964 Corvette coupe and really enjoyed it; great car, very fast and (unfortunately) an unbelievable cop magnet.

Orange BMW 2002 tii

OR

White Lotus Europa.  Actually was able to use one for the summer and it was great fun to drive.  I would constantly get pulled over by cops that just wanted to look at it.  Having your date get out of it in a formal dress would drive the car parkers crazy.  I would park it at the local bar under a semi trailer if there wasn't an available parking space.  Never could get the damn thing into reverse.

I grew up in a Toyota family, and one of the baddest things around when I was a kid was the Supra Twin Turbo. They're few and far between, but I'd love to have one.

I lived abroad when I was younger, saw a LOT of JDM cars in Asia that we wouldn't dream of stateside. One day, I hope to Grey Market import (It's legal now that it's 25 years old but I haven't the money) a 1993 Skyline R32 GTR. One of my dad's coworkers drove a black one like this and I remember being positively giddy as a kid hearing the engine fire up. I rode in it a couple times and what I would do to have that thrill again.

When I was in high school it was the McLaren F1. Nowadays in my late 30's it's the McLaren P1. I could also PROBABLY live with an Aston Martin DB9 or Audi R8. I guess.

This may be breaking the rules, but growing up in the late 70s & 80s, I liked a bit older cars. In the unobtainable category, I LOVED the Lamborghini Miura. The Countach is great, but I always preferred the more flowing & organic lines of the Miura. In the more obtainable category, I loved the original Toronado (‘66 & ‘67). One appeared parked in a driveway down the road from my house when I was in HS. It didn’t have a for sale sign, but it didn’t move for a month. I was just about to knock on the door & ask if it was for sale & it disappeared. I also really liked the first gen 2 seater Z cars (240, 260 280, not ZX). There was a ‘76 280Z for sale at a corner used car lot near my high school for $1695. I stopped & checked it out. It had fresh paint but the doors were at least 1/3 bondo as were the front quarter panels. I wondered what else the shiny paint was hiding & walked away.

Even the ZXs weren't great in that regards. In general Japanese cars were overhwelmingly rust buckets (at least in northern climates) until the late 70s. They were still a bit spotty through the early 80s, but by the mid 80s they had generally figured it out.

‘63 split window Vette.

Almost bought a ‘65 for $6000 in the late ‘70s.

But is wasn’t a ‘63.

Now they are worth $70K to $100K

Black and gold Porsche 911 Turbo with the whale tale and the targa top. Not sure on the year but probably a late 80's model

A red 1992 Porsche 911. I had a picture of one in my room for probably 5+ years and dreamed of owning one for a long time.
