Belleville coach Jermain Crowell mad at UM again

Submitted by Bluey on

This time it appears to be over Zordich's comments in the press regarding LaVert Hill.

I'll say this I've never seen a State coach publicly question a kids toughness from Detroit. Especially a kid who played a entire season hurt the year before.

As a matter of fact I've not seen a coach from anywhere else in the country ever do that. Not just State but anywhere. I find that very interesting.

— CoachJermain Crowell (@JermainCrowell) April 19, 2018

Never in the public eye!!! There needs to be a trust amongst coach and player. I see no way that a player can trust a coach who publicly questions your toughness. Interesting situation. I'm just watching.

What a soft PC culture we live in.. This is Football damnit!! If your players are going to get their "feelings hurt" by Zordich making those comments then we don't want them...

Must suck to know people will actually call you out for being a piece of shit these days unlike the good old days of the past when being racist or sexist or a general piece of shit wasn't called out.

Lol yup totally the same thing you got me there, caught me in a narrative that people complaining about pc culture and snowflakes are generally racist or misognystic fucks is equivalent of calling someone out for not practicing. Caught me red handed and everything.

I think there's a big difference between publicly saying that someone sucks, they'll never make it playing here, etc., vs. what Zordich is actually saying. He just wants Hill on the field more and is upset that he's injured. Besides, its not like what Zordich is saying isn't working. Hill and Long were both put under the gun by Zordich last offseason and they both became great corners in their first year as starters.

Not at all saying this is how Hill feels, but I'm just speaking rhetorically: if Hill can't handle public criticism, he might as well ditch any idea of playing in the league and start thinking about another career. You make one mistake there and you are going to get GRILLED by the media and the twitterverse the second after it happens. And no one is going to apologize to you for it. Criticism should never be made personal of course, but learning how to handle public criticism, or not hear that everything is always sunshine and rainbows, is a very critical component of being able to make it in the league.

You've got the high school coach of the team with the most d1 football talent on the state publicly calling out a Michigan coach and retweeting shit like the best recruits in Michigan go to msu. That shit isn't good regardless of what you think about what Zordich said. This is a bad situation that needs to be addessed by the coaching staff.

Dude he’s not a nobody high school coach! Will people stop saying this, he coached Webb, Delano, Lavert, and Jourdan in high school, plus he has revitalized Belleville into a power and has good prospects coming out of there. It’s not about dick size, it’s about a simple meeting of minds and 2 grown man having a good honest conversation with each other, not acting like a teenager and telling him “he can go fuck himself” that’s not what a good leader does.

Luckily you're not in charge. Because if you were, this HS would never send another player to Michigan again. And this isn't some crum-bum school in the UP that's never fielded a D1 football player. King HS is definitely considered to be one of the Michigan HS football powerhouses, and we need to be on good terms with them. If you're not, MSU, ND and OSU will go in and take everyone you otherwise would've gotten.

I don't think Zordich did or said anything wrong. He called out the entire secondary last year before the season started, and I'd say they all turned out pretty well in the end. But it still wouldn't hurt if Harbaugh tried to smooth things over. Not that he should ask Zordich to apologize, but at least explain that this isn't a slight on Hill.

Hill came from MLK and I was taking these tweets (based on other posters here) that this guy used to coach him there. If that's the case, even though he doesn't coach at King anymore, you can bet he'd be marching over there telling whoever their HC is to not send a single kid to Michigan ever again.

Harbaugh should call Crowell and tell him, with all sincerity, that if he doesn't knock it out Michigan won't consider him for future positions on their staff.

My guess us that shuts him down pretty quickly.

This is 100% a guy trying to get attention and, for some reason, thinking that comparing favorably MSU to UM right now is the best move.  Crowell has a relationship with Hill and I guess he should defend him from some perceived slight, but nobody owes him an explanation for a coach saying the truth.  But whatever, gotta get some more attention.

You act like there is not a country full of schools he can send his kids too. I get it, we’re all fans of Michigan on this board(save the occasional trolls) but we have to stop acting like we are the only option out there. They are only recruiting a kid at Belleville if he’s talented enough to play at Michigan and if he’s talented enough to play here than he will probably be good enough for any school in the B1G, and some other schools nationally. Is Harbaugh happy about Crowell’s comments...absolutely not! But he would be making a bad move to completely close off a school when all this could be ironed out behind the scenes.

I was being a bit facetious, but we have seen this type of response from HS coaches before. And almost always it ends with nothing of note happening. Yes, you shouldn't burn bridges with programs in your state, but this undercurrent that Michigan needs to address what a coach says on Twitter about an innocuous statement is just as reactionary.

I was being a bit facetious, but what diplomacy do you do here? A coach immediatelu starts publicly crapping on a coach and staff and starts tweeting pro-MSU statements. Is it really worth someone addressing it? I'm sure there is some authenticity with his concerns, but to me it's as much theatre and trolling as actual issues with a coach making really innocuous statements.

I've got two people responding to me like I'd actually stroll into Belleville High and tell the football coach to go fuck himself. Incredible how hard it is for people to use common sense and read between the lines.

The Devontae Dobbs saga has been going on since at least last summer when everybody was pulling their hair out about Michigan's lack of pursuit. If memory serves, Sam Webb mentioned last fall that Harbaugh & Co. were working on fixing that bridge with Belleville. So they've been trying for some time. And it sounded like they were making progress.

And after all of that hat-in-hand diplomacy, this dickhead at Belleville wants to drag Michigan on social media and paint Zordich as an asshole while stating that MSU would never conduct themselves in such a way?  Eat a bag of shit, Crowell.

I don't know the actual conversations. I don't know where the relationship stands. But as I understand it: Belleville wasn't a fan of Michigan, we've done our best to act like an adult, find common ground and smooth it over, and their coach apparently doesn't give a shit because he continues to publicly act like an MSU recruiter and take shots at U-M.

At some point, you have to stop wasting your time and instead focus on programs and kids that are receptive to your pursuit. Belleville is in the shadow of Michigan Stadium. There are undoubtedly Michigan fans that play football there. If Michigan blackballs Belleville, that's going to hurt Crowell's program just as much as it will hurt Michigan. Anybody with mutual Michigan interest will transfer out of there or go somewhere else to begin with.

Yes, you'd love to be in the good graces of every high school program producing D-1 prospects, but we're not getting any Belleville kids right now anyway. Move on.

Crowell coached Delano Hill, he's likely known Lavert for a long long time.  He's being protective of a kid he cares about.  Crowell and coaches like him really try their best to get kids out of the city of Detroit so they can pursue their dreams.  So while he's probably being a little over protective and I don't get the MSU love, I get wehere he's coming from.  Hill is a possible NFL draftee in the Spring of 2019, will NFL GMs now be questioning his toughness and his health because of what they've heard?  Will Zordich's words hurt his draft stock?  Maybe, maybe not, but I'm thinking that is where Crowell is coming from.

There’s no question Zordich was trying to send a message to Hill. It’s the training staff that should be worried about Hill, not Zordich. A coach should never pressure a player to play when he’s injured

from Texas, Dan Jenkins, once wrote that you may be hurt or you may be injured.  If you're injured we'll go see a doctor.  But if you're hurt son, sometimetimes you gotta play hurt.  I tell my two 7 year old boys and 9 year old boy the same thing when soccer/flag football/baseball/more soccer/terrorizing each other comes up in the backyard: Sometimes you gotta play hurt.

Coach Zordich did basically the same thing at the end of fall camp last season by calling out the entire secondary and it worked out pretty well. I'll keep my trust in the coaches!

Lol Crowell is already getting dusted on Twitter with people replying with quotes from Head coaches like Saban and Kirby saying they exact same thing. His response - I stand corrected - I still don't like it.

I'll just go ahead and say it now, Dobbs isn't coming here anyways, and I'd put all my MGO Points on that ! So go ahead let the Belleville coach rant he's pretty much anti-Michigan anyways.

Jimmyisgod

I'd take flipping him over flipping Logan Brown, he's a crazy good athlete for a big man.  Dobbs just doesn't like Michigan, he's an MSU fan, Ohio State has a shot at him, but he's probably going to MSU.  Dobbs is an elite athlete for an Offensive Lineman, that's why he's a 5 star, there aren't many big men in the country as athletic and flexible as Dobbs.

And Belleville is becoming a pipeline, it's worth smoothing things out with them just to be in on Damon Payne in a couple years, at worst he's going to be a top 50 player at DT/DE.

I know nothing about Michigan high school football, and next to nothing about recruiting. But it would seem to me that he is doing his kids a major disservice by indulging his UM hatred. A coach who truly has the best interests of his kids as his primary concern should maintain cordial relationships with ALL of the in state college programs. He doesn't have to be best buddies with Harbaugh, or Dantonio or anyone else. But having a public war with any of them is selfish and stupid.
