Can we be better next season?

Submitted by TK on
The thing that excites me about next year is that we made our living on defense and the defense should only be better next season. Swapping Teske for Mo is a huge defensive upgrade and we return our best 2 elite defenders in Matthews and Z. Livers more minutes over Duncan also an upgrade. Obviously we need to find offense next year and hopefully Matthews and Poole can be our go to scorers with others stepping up as well. I think we will be very good. Probably take some time to gel like most Beilein teams. I’m not saying our result will be better, but I feel we have the ability to be at least as good as this year on paper.

1.  Matthews comes back, becomes a better outside and FT shooter

2.  Simpson improves his shooting, FT's, and less turnovers.

3.  Livers makes a leap up and become a reliable scorer

4.  Poole becomes a major part of the offense - especially from 3.

5.  Teske improves his scoring and rebounding

6.  Someone at guard steps up (Brooks, one of the freshmen) to provide good bench depth.

7.  At least one of Johns and Brazdeikis becomes a major contributor.

(I'm assuming Wagner goes pro.)

I don't know about next year, but the year after this team could be in the Final Four  again.

I'm skeptical at this point, given that we lose DR and Rahk - esp Rahk - that dude has 1 TO per game playing 38 mins per game. I think the TOs go up w/o him taking up 38 mpg. That's not even accounting for Mo and or Mathews leaving some big holes offensively that this M team really needed these last 2 months.

Sure, it can happen but it's gonna be a very young team that will struggle with JB's offense, TOs, so let's hope the D stays where it si

Sure. Probably won't end in a title because so much of that is luck and chance, but the team definitely has the potential to be one of the best.

We were ranked #6 in the nation in threes attempted, but #136 in three percentage made. Embarrassingly bad on free throws. Someone has to be able to make open shots. Defense is legit, though. So we have that goin’ for us, which is nice.

At this point: Wagner. Anyone who even remotely thinks losing him won't be a HUGE impact is dumb. Wagner is THE leader, guyts, glue, maiize, blue...losing him would mean no B1G championship.

Matthews: Disappeared after playing a great tournament. He seemed to be intimidated and out of it--is that why Kentucky dumped him? His play in the NC game told me that if Mo stays and he goes--no big deal.

Everyone else will be better, no questions.

BUT--it was telling, yes, telling that Michigan beat no one higher than a five seed to make it to that game. When they played a 1 seed--BOOM goes the bottom out of the floor. Villanove, great and all that, but still Michigan held their top guys in check, yet let Divencenzo look like Michael Jordan. NEED MOAR WEAPONZ.

MAAR--will they replace his moxy and leadership? Again, this is not a "plug and play" program just yet. Losing MAAR will also be huge. AND as with Mo Wagner. please, oh please don't act like that will be an easy replacement.

Or we need our freshmen to come in and immediately contribute. We weren't a good shooting team this year. Beilein can draw up an offense to get you open, but he can't make the shot for you. If Simpson could find a half-way decent shot this team would be eons better. If Matthews could find an outside shot this team would be eons better. If Teske could develop a mid-range game it would help. If Livers becomes more assertive, if Poole becomes more consistent, etc.

I don't see this team being very good to start the season, and many people (probably myself included) will gripe and moan, but this team could make another run come March.

I think we'll be good, but your two comments about Teske / Moe and Livers / Robinson swaps improving the defense are not necessarily true. Teske helps with rim protection but his feet are slower than Moe's, so therefore he can't get out as quickly on stretch 5s (like he had to last night). Also, Robinson improved greatly on post defense over the course of the year. Wasn't nearly the liability it was at the beginning.

You know how I know these aren't necessarily improvements? Because they weren't made this season.

Year at this time, the answer would probably have been no. But we were better based upon 2 new banners. So possible esp. if Mo returns.

masked a lot of issues with scoring efficiency, a typical Beilein-team staple. We had only three scorers last night along with Poole's and Teske's minimal contributions.

If Michigan is to grow as a team, Teske is going to have to play a bigger role. He has has to become more than a defensive rim protector. That status will change or not depending on what Moe decides.

But Teske showed great growth. At times, he was  a highly dependable offensive player when called upon offering a glimpse of his future with very positive contributions in keeping possessions alive with his passing, putbacks and rebounds. He needs to become a scoring threat down low because I don't see him as a roaming seven-foot jump shooter behind the arc.

If he can become an effective pick and pop, and pick-and-roll post, like Morgan became, highly efficient around the basket, then you can almost afford to have him in the game at the same time as Simpson.

I mean, if both Matthews and Wagner hang around, then that plus the experience gained here for everyone plus the recruiting class coming in and we're definitely a better team than this one, I would think. Of course, that wouldn't necessary guarantee a deep run again since as we've seen the Tournament is weird like that, but having an extremely talented group like this stay intact and even add contributors is most of that battle there too.

The only way next season can be "better" is winning the national title. While we bring in some great recruits, there's no one replacing Wagner, so the answer to "can we be better?" is: maybe? probably not.

then the outlook is brighter right of way. You have a situation that you would have had this year at the beginning if DJ Wilson had played. This year's team would have been awesome in an even more enhanced defensive way given Wilson's length and ability.

You put together this year's squad with Wilson in the front court and then DiVencenzo is guarded by DJ, and he can't deal with his size and length, and his shot gets blocked at the cup.

What a difference one guy makes sometimes. But that's been Beilein's history at Michigan, developing guys for quicker growth than anyone anticipated and watching them leave for their pro future one to two steps ahead of their classmates. It's not about our amusement or entertainment, though, it's about getting ahead in life, establishing your place in the world and making it. Can't ever lose sight of that.

But you wonder what if.....in one more shining moment of opportunity things might be different.

If the team had DJ Wilson the entire season, everything plays out totally different. Where they would have been in the tournament, who would have excelled, if he would have taken away from Matthews/Poole, etc... Life does not occur in a vacuum like that.

They could have very well lost in the 2nd round with a different mix of guys.

If Mo comes back, we should be better. I see Poole stepping in and becoming a top scorer with Matthews and Simpson the elite defenders at the guard spot. Livers at the 4 and Mo back at the 5...Plus the depth should be better with the talent of the freshmen and the current freshmen gaining another year. I see Poole breaking out big time next year.

It's hard to imagine Beilein forcing Watson or Davis off the team. That would be pretty out of character. I feel like he has an understanding with Mo that this is his last year. It was apparent when he took him out with MAAR and Robinson last night for a final ovation.

I think we will offensively be a better team, but I do think we will regress on defense since we may be getting a lot younger, if the freshmen coming in live up to the hype.

Its incredibly hard to make it to the championship.  We can be better for sure but doesn't necessarily mean we win the B10 or advance to championship.

Yes! We have legit pure shooters again. JP will be playing more often and I'm sure will be more consistent and we have some good youngs that I'm sure 1 will crack starting 5 and maybe a couple with meaningful pt. Teske gets better, Simpson finds a decent stroke, Charles will have better handles, Livers more assertive on the O side

I seriously think we will be better next year. Unfortunately it will be pretty damn hard to be more successful than this year though. Pretty much the only way to be more successful would be to win the NC, which I hope we can do.

We may very well be better. However in terms of March, we are likely to have a more difficult road to the Final Four. So better team yes... better tournament, probably not.

Better than smacking MSU by double digits twice, winning the Big 10 tournament, winning like 1,000 games in a row and and making the national championship game?

Probably not.  And if the season is better, it can't possibly be better by much (like 1 game better at the end).

I have reset my annual hopes to a Big 10 tournament win and Final 4 birth.

Dreaming of the repeat!

If Wagner stays, we are almost certainly going to be better and should win the Big10 outright, (especially with all the talent that is leaving the other Big10 powers) and be a favorite to win it all.

If he leaves, its imposible to know. We are going to rely on Beilien working his magic on nearly every player on our roster in order to impove significant holes in their current game. This is Beilien we are talking about, so there's reason to believe this is very possilbe.

Then there's the question of how our incoming freshman will contribute, since we will count on them for significant backup (or starting) minutes. Personally, I think Iggy and Johns (especially Iggy) are eventually going to be absolute beasts. How long it takes them to get there, remains to be seen.
